Overindulgence in social networking, in general, and texting, in particular, is much in practice. It is cutting across various population boundaries and has almost assumed an endemic proportion. Its consequential impact on the standard language has acquired greater importance. This paper aims to determine the perceptions and attitudes of English Second Language (ESL) learners at Aligarh Muslim University towards the consequences of texting on Standard English. The data were collected through a five-point scale questionnaire from ninety students who were enrolled at Aligarh Muslim University during the academic year 2010-2011. The respondents completed a 16-item questionnaire. The students from which the data were collected were grouped according to their levels. The results indicate the negative impact of this new usage of the language in breaking the rules of English language and influencing their literacy. Moreover, the questionnaire results from respondents' point of view show that regardless of their heavy use of texting, most respondents have a negative attitude towards texting and they viewed it as a threat to Standard English.

Abstract Textual criticism is a necessary first step when studying a biblical text. However, textual issues go beyond isolated readings and reach the literary composition of the book, Hebrew grammar, theology or history. The books of Kings / Kingdoms offer many examples where textual variants solve difficulties or shed light on other venues of study. In the present article, we study the name Molek / Molok / Milkom, the presence of the proleptic pronoun in some verses of Kings, and the names with suffix -ay from a textual point of view.

While there are numerous investigations of the impact of English on Spanish vocabulary, the opposite direction of lexical borrowing has as yet received fairly little attention. Spanish-derived words and meanings which have been taken over into English in the last few decades have been relatively neglected. The present article gives essential insight into the influence of Spanish on the English lexicon since 1901. I assign the different twentieth and twenty-first century Spanish borrowings to various lexical domains in order to offer an overview of the subject areas and fields of life to which Spanish has added new words and senses in recent times.

Abstract Conventional wisdom was that thermal relics from the epoch of reionization (EOR) would vanish swiftly. Recently, however, it was shown that these relics can survive to lower redshifts (z ∼ 2) than previously thought, due to gas at mean density being heated to T ∼ 3 × 104 K by reionization, which is inhomogeneous, and shocks. Given the high sensitivities of upcoming Lyα forest surveys, this effect will be a novel broadband systematic for cosmological application. From the astrophysical point of view, however, the imprint of inhomogeneous reionization can shed light on the EOR and cosmic dawn. We utilize a hybrid method — which includes two different simulation codes capable of handling the huge dynamical range — to show the impact of patchy reionization on the Lyα forest and its dependence on different astrophysical scenarios. We found statistically significant deviations in the 1D Lyα power spectrum at k = 0.14 cMpc−1 that range from $\sim 1\%$ at z = 2 up to almost $\sim 20\%$ at z = 4. The deviations in the 3D Lyα power spectrum, at the same wavenumber, are large and range from a few per cent at z = 2 up to $\sim 50\%$ at z = 4, although these deviations ignore the effect of He ii reionization and AGN feedback at z < 4. By exploiting different k-dependence of power spectrum among various astrophysical scenarios, the effect of patchy reionization on the Lyα forest power spectrum can open a new window into cosmic reionization and possibly cosmic dawn.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic is an external shock that has disrupted the foundations of everyday life. For cosmopolitan entrepreneurs, the impact is even more decisive as it confronts their core values and jeopardises their identities, ways of working and the lifestyles they cherish. Cosmopolitans are individuals who identify themselves as citizens of the world and voluntarily move from country to country in pursuit of self-fulfilment in both life and work. Cosmopolitan entrepreneurs are future-oriented and open to the world and the opportunities it may provide. Beyond securing, maintaining and improving their professional and/or economic positions, their mobility is an elementary part of the cosmopolitan life itself, something they find attractive, interesting and stimulating. Thus, a cosmopolitan entrepreneur’s business is often non-location-bound to enable continued mobility. With our interview-based research, we shed light on how COVID-19 has changed the lives of Finnish-born cosmopolitan entrepreneurs, discussing what they feel about the changes and how they see their future.

The article reflects the main results of comparative bibliometric analysis of the scientific-practical Russian Journal of Library Science “Bibliotekovedenie” and foreign journals in the library sphere. The purpose of the study is to determine the growth points and development directions of the Russian Journal of Library Science for the formation of international scientific communication practices and professional discourse. The object of the research was metadata array of fourteen foreign English-language library journals included in the international scientometric databases Scopus and Web of Science, and the journal “Bibliotekovedenie” for 2015—2019. The authors used content analysis method, the method of comparison and correlation, as well as criterion method based on determination of relevant indicators and development of criteria for evaluating journals to identify parameters of similarity and difference, followed by the use of method of data interpretation based on modern cultural-philosophical and cultural-theoretical principles and concepts. As a result, the study identified the typical topics for the most frequently cited articles in the foreign journals. The authors show that the journal “Bibliotekovedenie” publishes the articles that can be attributed to most of the presented topics. However, most often they are characterized by another emphasis, presentation style and structure of the text, as well as approaches to conducting research. Trends in the citation of articles in Russian publications indicate the difference in a set of priority topics. The authors conclude that these differences depend not only and not so much on the “collision” of traditional and modern vision of the situation from the point of view of scientific research, but rather on deeper reasons based on cultural differences. These reasons are driven by the postmodern increase of the impact of culture on the development of science, reflecting these differences in the languages of cultures and in the translations, as well as by other, sometimes opposite, trends in the development of socio-cultural situation in different countries, related to the understanding of place and role of libraries, books and information in modern society.Based on the obtained results, there was adjusted the development plan of scientific-practical journal “Bibliotekovedenie”, as well as its name in English, starting 2019 (no. 6) — Russian Journal of Library Science.

Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a primary metabolic disorder and the impact of this entity on maladaptive tissue and organ responses may be mediated through alter metabolomic profile and signatures at steady state or at stress. To this point of view Beckman et al. (Clin. Sci. (Lond.) (2020) 134, 2369–2379), in a hypothesis-generated study, investigated how metabolomic profile is affected following branchial artery ischemia. Interestingly, they found that there is a dynamic and altered change of metabolites associated with energy substrate and with glycolysis/glyconeogenesis in patients with DM. This evidence may shed light on the impaired muscle tolerance in subjects with DM and on impaired vasoreactivity. However, these data lack the ability to be conclusive and further steps should be explored to understand how metabolomic profile is implicated in the response of muscle tissue to ischemia and to the clinical profile of subjects with DM.

The present study is an attempt to shed light on the term 'juncture' in the English Language. The study is theoretically and practically oriented. The problem lies in the fact that Iraq EFL college students may face difficulty in their recognition in continuous speech, the sequences of words uttered without conventional spaces between them. The listener in general and EFL college students in particular how they are understood what the speaker said for instance, I scream and ice cream?    In this study, the researcher tries to explain how the phonetics cues which help the listeners to understand the difference between the utterances that they have the same phonetic transcription and how the phonetic cues signaling the boundaries between words in connected speech .? The hypotheses of the study (1)The EFL college students can recognize the two similar utterances in connect speech when they listened to them. (2) the EFL college students are not able to recognize the two similar utterances in connected speech.   The results show that the first hypothesis is refuted, that the Iraqi EFL College students do face difficulty in discrimination of two identical phonetic transcriptions. The second hypothesis is verified that EFL college students do not aware of how to use phonetics cues. In the light of the conclusions arrived at, several pedagogical recommendations and suggestions for teaching English as a foreign language have been made
