Despite its status as a largely wordless performance, Punchdrunk's 2013 production of The Drowned Man activates a ventriloquist paradigm to frame its engagement with form: both the physical body as performance media. The Drowned Man's message about voice and form reimagines immersive theatre's multi-medial potential by invoking ventriloquism's cinematic and theatrical legacies. By staging the dummy's moment of self-awareness, The Drowned Man encourages it audiences to question the extent to which they, too, are invisibly controlled. The production distorts form in order to stage a self-reflexive dialogue about voices, bodies, and performance. The result is often uncanny, unsettling, bewildering and bewitching: much like ventriloquism itself.

Abstract Introduction: Considering the evidence of the relationship between the multisensory representation of the body and the perception of pain, it is suggested that body self-consciousness is a relevant variable in the evaluation of the health of musicians. Objective: to develop and to raise evidences of the conceptual, item and construct validity of a psychometric scale that evaluates the body self-consciousness and the ergonomic / health aspects of the musicians. Method: A crosssectional quantitative study with a survey design for the development of a psychometric instrument. 415 university students of music participated. The data were analyzed with the aid of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, R software and by factor analysis. Results: the final version of the instrument presents three scales: 1) Body Self-Awereness Scale of Musicians; 2) Self-perception of Pain and Performance Scale; 3) Scale of Preventive Aspects. The structuring of the three scales reinforces the hypothesis that the ergonomic aspects of the musician's health, including the physical, cognitive and organizational dimensions, should be part of the psychometric measures for this occupational task. Conclusion: the Body Self-Consciousness and Musician's Health Battery proved to be a suitable psychometric measure for the clinical evaluation of this population.  Keywords: ergonomics; body self-consciousness; musculoskeletal pain; health of the musician.

Emotional intelligence may affect organizational performance, and the aim of our research was to examine whether this statement can be proven in the case of financially successful organizations or not. Information about leaders has been derived from online surveys with Genos EI and also from interviews, and we gathered data about organizational success from the national TAX system. Leaders usually determine group and organizational effectiveness, so we analyzed data from 22 leaders working in successful Hungarian companies. According to our results, some emotional competencies correlate with performance. In this case self-awareness, awareness of others and self-management seemed to affect organizational performance. In our regression analysis, self-awareness seemed to be a predictor variable of performance. The relationship between emotional intelligence and performance should be examined further by expanding on the analysis of other performance indicators and leadership styles.

The contention in this chapter is that the distinction between “administrative” and “developmental” 360 Feedback has become meaningless because it is rarely performed with developmental self-awareness as the only end goal. Almost all 360 systems use the data gathered to inform talent and performance management to some degree. However, these possibilities are likely overlooked when adopting an “either/or” viewpoint on how 360 Feedback can be leveraged in the workplace. First, the historical distinction between administrative and developmental 360 Feedback is reviewed. Highlighted is how this dichotomy has become outdated when thinking about the uses of 360 Feedback. Second, some of the ways that developmentally oriented 360 Feedback is used to strengthen strategic practices in talent management are explored, including individual and team training, employee coaching, succession planning, executive onboarding, and leader development. The chapter ends by using a continuum framework for 360 Feedback in organizations; noted are some future research and practice concerns that are evident from adopting this framework.

Abstract Objective Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) may be an early indicator of future cognitive decline. Although early executive function (EF) decline in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) may be a sensitive predictor, the predicative utility of SCCs specific to EF is unknown. Thus, this study examined whether EF performance predicts SCCs of EF in healthy, well-educated middle aged and older adults, and whether carrying of APOE ε4 alters that prediction. Method Fifty-five cognitively intact middle aged to older adults (Mage = 64.1, range = 48–84, 19 e4+) completed the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe) Executive Dysfunction Scale (EXECDYS) to measure SCCs and an EF battery (Trail-making A&B, Symbol-digit Modalities Test, verbal fluency (letter, category), which principal components analysis (varimax rotation) reduced to a single EF factor. We examined whether SCCs (EXECDYS) were predicted by EF performance (age, depression covaried), and whether ε4 moderated that prediction (PROCESS 3.0). Results The model was significant (R2 = 0.31; p = 0.002), with a significant EXECDYS X ε4 interaction (ß = 4.24, t(55) = 2.37; p = .02), indicating that EF performance predicted EXECDYS, but in ε4-carriers only, those with poorer EF were less aware of that dysfunction. Conclusions Amongst APOE ε4-carriers, a group with high risk for AD, those with poorer EF had less accurate self-awareness of their EF, suggesting earlier formal assessment is needed in ε4-carriers to detect decline. Furthermore, as our study examined healthy, well-educated, cognitively intact adults from middle age, these findings suggest ε4-carriers are at particularly high risk for AD if their self-awareness and performance of EF are both low. Combining EF assessment with self-appraisal of EF may aid AD diagnostics.

Historically, students in engineering design courses learn how to resolve conflict almost exclusively through experience and with varying degrees of success, which can have ramifications on student wellness and performance [1]. Instructors can intervene by scaffolding conflict resolution, but since they are often made aware only when team conflict becomes unmanageable, proactive strategies are needed. Several strategies were implemented in a new third-year course to enhance students’ self-awareness and empathy for others when working in teams. These included personality and conflict style exercises, the generation of an approachability statement, and the reflective monitoring of team dynamics using ITP metrics’ assessments during the term [2]. Surveys gauged student satisfaction with teamwork, the frequency of team conflict, and preparedness for resolving conflicts. Overall, students felt better prepared to handle future conflict as a result of the course. However, additional accountability measures may enhance the perceived value of the interventions used.

ABSTRACT: Flavell (1976, 232) describes metacognition as: “one's knowledge concerning one's own cognitive processes or anything related to them.” Metacognition has been characterized as “thinking about thinking” (Georghiades 2004), “thinking about learning” (Jackson 2004), “learning about learning” (Case et al. 2001), “knowing about learning” (Meyer 2004), “knowledge about knowledge” (Yore and Treagust 2006), and “what we know about what we know” (Halpern 1998). Essentially, metacognition involves a self-awareness of how one learns and thinks. Because metacognition is an important aspect of self-regulated learning, it has potential as a learning skill or attribute that can serve to improve accounting education. The purpose of this paper is to explore the association between metacognition and student performance and success in accounting classes. The researchers use data collected over the course of a decade (1995–2004) to examine this association. Students in a variety of accounting courses completed a questionnaire to assess their metacognitive knowledge and self-regulation. The survey results support the conclusion that metacognitive attributes are associated with accounting course achievement.
