The research objective was to investigate the packing degree, phase composition, microstructure and some other properties of the mullite‒ZrO2composite ceramics with the Si3N4addition sintered in different ways, such as: by the conventional method, by the spark-plasma method, and both in the microwave and solar ovens. The comparative analysis was carried out for the strength properties (these were the ultimate compressing strength and the elasticity modulus) for the ceramic samples which had been sintered by means of the conventional and of the spark-plasma methods. Some reasons for the defect formation in the samples after their sintering in the microwave and solar ovens were mentioned.Ill.8. Ref. 10. Tab. 2.

With help of the method of the spark plasma sintering (SPS), the fine-grained (of micron approximately) ceramics based on various alumina nanopowders had created. A comparison of microhardness of ceramic samples obtained from 11 alumina nanopowders and 2 their composites was held. Microhardness of the ceramics obtained both by SPS, and by the traditional method (at successive pressing and sintering) is compared. The dependence of ceramics microhardness on the phase composition of the initial nanopowder and the average size of its particles was investigated. Besides alumina nanopowders ( Al 2 O 3), there were compared microhardness of ceramics from other 10 nanopowders of oxides ( SiO 2, ZnO , Fe 3 O 4, Gd 2 O 3, CuO , WO 3, TiO 2, Y 2 O 3, ZrO 2, MgO ) obtained both by SPS, and by the traditional method. It is obtained that the microhardness of the ceramics created on the method of the spark plasma sintering, is significantly higher than a microhardness of the ceramics obtained by the traditional method; at the SPS method the average size of grain in ceramics decreases (to 1 micron and less).

There are limited published studies related to the mechanical properties of bamboo species in the Philippines. In this study, the shear strength properties of some economically viable bamboo species in the Philippines were properly characterized based on 220 shear test results. The rationales of selecting this mechanical property are the following: (1) Shear strength, parallel to the fiber, has the highest variability among the mechanical properties; and (2) Shear is one of the governing forces on joint connections, and such connections are the points of failure on bamboo structures when subjected to extreme loading conditions. ISO 22157-1 (2017) test protocol for shear was used for all tests. The results showed that Bambusa blumeana has the highest average shear strength, followed by Gigantochloa apus, Dendrocalamus asper, Bambusa philippinensis, and Bambusa vulgaris. However, comparative analysis, using One-way ANOVA, showed that shear strength values among these bamboo species have significant differences statistically. A linear regression model is also established to estimate the shear strength of bamboo from the physical properties. Characteristic shear strength is also determined using ISO 12122-1 (2014) for future design reference.

Zr-2.5Cu and Zr-10Cu powder mixtures were consolidated in the extrusion process and using the spark plasma sintering technique. In these studies, material tests were carried out in the fields of phase composition, microstructure, hardness and tensile strength for Zr-Cu materials at room temperature (RT) and 400 °C. Fractography analysis of materials at room temperature and 400 °C was carried out. The research took into account the anisotropy of the materials obtained in the extrusion process. For the nonequilibrium SPS process, ZrCu2 and Cu10Zr7 intermetallic compounds formed in the material at sintering temperature. Extruded materials were composed mainly of α-Zr and ZrCu2. The presence of intermetallic compounds affected the reduction in the strength properties of the tested materials. The highest strength value of 205 MPa was obtained for the extruded Zr-2.5Cu, for which the samples were cut in the direction of extrusion. For materials with 10 wt.% copper, more participation of the intermetallic phase was formed, which lowered the mechanical properties of the obtained materials. In addition to brittle intermetallic phases, the materials were characterized by residual porosity, which also reduced the strength properties.

AbstractIn this work, we studied the brazing characteristics of Al2O3 and 3D printed Ti–6Al–4V alloys using a novel equiatomic AlZnCuFeSi high entropy alloy filler (HEAF). The HEAF was prepared by mechanical alloying of the constituent powder and spark plasma sintering (SPS) approach. The filler microstructure, wettability and melting point were investigated. The mechanical and joint strength properties were also evaluated. The results showed that the developed AlZnCuFeSi HEAF consists of a dual phase (Cu–Zn, face-centered cubic (FCC)) and Al–Fe–Si rich (base centered cubic, BCC) phases. The phase structure of the (Cu–Al + Ti–Fe–Si)/solid solution promises a robust joint between Al2O3 and Ti–6Al–4V. In addition, the joint interfacial reaction was found to be modulated by the brazing temperature and time because of the altered activity of Ti and Zn. The optimum shear strength reached 84 MPa when the joint was brazed at 1050 °C for 60 s. The results can be promising for the integration of completely different materials using the entropy driven fillers developed in this study.

The article presents the study of alumina nanoparticles’ (nanofibers) concentration effect on the strength properties of pure nickel. The samples were obtained by spark plasma sintering of previously mechanically activated metal powders. The dependence of the grain size and the relative density of compacts on the number of nanofibers was investigated. It was found that with an increase in the concentration of nanofibers, the average size of the matrix particles decreased. The effects of the nanoparticle concentration (0.01–0.1 wt.%) on the elastic modulus and tensile strength were determined for materials at 25 °C, 400 °C, and 750 °C. It was shown that with an increase in the concentration of nanofibers, a 10–40% increase in the elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength occurred. A comparison of the mechanical properties of nickel in a wide range of temperatures, obtained in this work with materials made by various technologies, is carried out. A description of nanofibers’ mechanisms of influence on the structure and mechanical properties of nickel is given. The possible impact of impurity phases on the properties of nickel is estimated. The tendency of changes in the mechanical properties of nickel, depending on the concentration of nanofibers, is shown.

ZnO-Pr6O11-Dy2O3-based varistor ceramics doped with 0~1.5 mol% La2O3 were fabricated by a conventional ceramic method. All the samples were sintered at 1350 oCfor 2 h. The phase composition and microstructure of the ceramic samples have been investigated by XRD, SEM and EDS. The results of SEM micrographs indicated that the La2O3 additives can promote ZnO grain’s growth, and the rare earth elements dispersed mainly in the intergranular phase observed by EDS. The electrical properties of the samples determined by the V-I curves revealed that the breakdown voltage of samples decreases from 508 V/mm to about 100 V/mm with the increase of La2O3, and the nonlinear exponent also decreases from 20.2 to 13.2. The typical leakage current is about 10.2 μA for the sample doped with 0.5 mol% La2O3.

This work investigated the chemical and phase composition of aluminum oxide powders obtained by various methods (alkoxide, codeposition, thermal and plasma-chemical). The physicomechanical, thermophysical and thermal properties of ceramic samples based on them have been determined. The effect of the nature of the aluminum oxide powder and the production process parameters on the sedimentation stability of aqueous suspensions based on them has been determined. The influence of the content of particles of aluminum oxide, buffer solution and rheological additives on the viscosity, sedimentation and aggregate stability of aqueous suspensions has been determined.
