The paper focuses on beer consumption in the Czech Republic, the country with the highest beer consumption per capita in the world. To understand the recent beer-consumption behaviour, we use the monthly data from a three year period, 2006–2008, to estimate both the 2SLS and the SUR model charting the demand for beer extended to the past consumption and advertising expenditure. The demand for beer in the Czech Republic reacts more strongly to the changes in price than it does to the investments in advertising. The results suggest two implications for the policy-makers. Consumption is as sensitive to the price of beer and its alternatives as it is to advertising, so taxes or restrictions on advertising can affect the consumption of beer, considering the long tradition of Czech consumers in drinking beer as the strong role of the past consumption demonstrates.

The aim of this study is to present the story behind the media image recounting the final months in the life of the former primate of the Czech Republic, cardinal Miloslav Vlk. The analyses presented in this study are grounded in a corpus of texts consisting of 63 press articles published by Czech national dailies between 23 January and 26 March 2017. The image recreated on their basis has become extraordinary not only due to the fact of its very existence within the perception of the world promoted by Czech media, but also because of the way it was constructed and presented to the audience. One must not underestimate the role of the main protagonist of the analyzed image, who became one of its authors himself.

Research background: In the past, some studies proved that the development of a currency exchange rate predicts the development of the whole national economy. The monetary market overtakes the development of the actual economy for a few months. Does this apply also in the case of the Czech koruna, in the era of the global Coronavirus pandemics and in the world affected by the pandemics? Purpose of the article: The main objective is to analyze a dependence of the Czech koruna (CZK) to Euro (EUR) exchange rate development on gross domestic product of the Czech Republic in the conditions of an expected crisis. Methods: The data used of the analysis are represented by the information about the CZK and EUR exchange rate from the beginning of 1999 to the 15th June 2020 and by the quarterly development of the Czech GDP. To measure the dependence and predict the development of the GDP based on the CZK exchange rate development, the method of AI is used, namely the regression analysis using the artificial neural networks. Findings & Value added: The effect of EUR/CZK on GDP can be quantified reaching around 31%. It is assumed that the GDP will fall significantly in 2020 with a certain growth only being possibly expected in 2021 (even more significantly in the second quarter of 2021). Due to the GDP development, the development of the EUR/CZK could then be forecasted as well.

The teaching of literature in secondary schools in the Czech Republic (note that this is in the course of Czech literature courses and taught in Czech) contributes in a relevant way to open to young people new worlds. It works starting from the treasury of the world thought, Homer’s Odyssey for example through Shakespearean drama and Goethe’s Faust, to the novels by Balzac or by Zola, to the twentieth century authors who engaged in the humanist cause by unveiling the hidden facets of human existence. The purpose of our reflection on intercultural topics is first of all to analyze the contribution of reading to the level of knowledge, then to propose the possibilities of using literary texts to demonstrate how much the dialogue between cultures is included in the works themselves, and finally, to consider which contemporary literary texts on a world scale could enrich in a relevant way the choice of books recommended to young Czechs. The conclusion will be a synthesis trying to compare the situation of Czech students to that of young Frenchmen, for example. It will also highlight the role of translation not only in teaching literature, but in knowing the Other.

The main issue raised in the text is the protection of the natural environment and the issue of ecology in a multi-layered manner that compels spiritual and ethical considerations. Attention is paid to the problems of the Earth, the common home of all people, which is the object of human concern. There is also an important issue of integrated ecology - humanity and everything that surrounds it is a unity, and nature is not something separate. The role of education in shaping and awareness of possible international dialogue in the issue of re-established ecology is also underlined. True environmental protection is not an action aimed at completely stopping man's interference in nature and preserving it in an absolutely intact state, but a harmonious coexistence and joint development of a man together with the world around him. It is above all a new lifestyle, solidarity between people and the resulting new attitude to nature. Today, ecology is a call to the proper attitude of man towards the world around him. The article is a summary of the work carried out under the project of three Schools cooperating with each other, which represent Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic. The aim of the project was to consider the importance of ecology in each country at high school level and to apply technology to implement this project.

Despite some inaccuracies originating chiefly in statistical discrepancies, the analysis has shown that the role of developing countries in foreign trade of the Czech Republic reveals a clearly downward trend. This is observable even in comparison with the prevailing trends characterizing trade relations between developing countries and transformation economies as a group. In view of the fact that developing countries including China and Vietnam have been the most dynamic segment of the world economy during the first half of the 1990s, this downward trend gives no reasons to satisfaction. Moreover, their trade has been growing at markedly rapid rates than GDP. In these circumstances, the falling share of developing countries in Czech exports and imports indicates that Czech trade tends to lose opportunities to grow.

One of John Maynard Keynes's most quoted statements (1935, p. 383) is: … the ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood. Indeed the world is ruled by little else. Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influences, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. The number of economists per capita in the United States has risen in the past few decades. At the same time, the public has become more comfortable with big government. This raises intriguing questions regarding just how economists are influencing public opinion; we are left wondering whether economists are instilling a desire in the public for more government or whether, in opposition to Keynes's statement, economists are losing influence. In this paper, we provide some answers. We find that the increased role of economists in society and in policymaking has led to an increase in favorable attitudes toward government intervention.

The article deals with complex and controversial issues related to the uprising and liberation of Prague in May 1945. Interpretation of the events became acute and caused lively discussions in connection with the demolition of the monument to Marshal I. V. Konev on April 3, 2020 by the order of the local municipality. The Czech Republic is also discussing the idea of «perpetuating the role of other liberators» of the capital – soldiers of the ROA division, which for two days (May 6-7) provided assistance to the rebels. Using new documents from the Central archive of the Ministry of defense of the Russian Federation, the author draws a conclusion about the limited influence of the Vlasov units. They, indeed, brought confusion to the German ranks, but early in the morning of May 8, they themselves left Prague on a rapid march. After that, fighting and negotiations between the rebels and the German command continued. The article emphasizes that the main goal of the Soviet military operation from 6 to 11 May 1945 was the defeat of the German Army Group Center. The liberation of Prague was only part of a powerful offensive by three Soviet fronts. Heavy battles for Prague did not happen, but the entry of Soviet tanks into the Czech capital and the subsequent jubilation of local residents became a symbol of the end of the war in Europe. The author concludes that the demolition of monuments to Soviet soldiers and commanders is a manifestation of internal political struggle in the countries where it occurs, and the Czech Republic is only one of these examples.
