<p>Critical Discourse Analysis is a study that analyzes language usage in terms of linguistic features and a social practice. Each type of mass media shows a different tendency in conveying information through the language it uses. Likewise, there are some differences between government and non-government media as well. The data in this study were obtained by collecting texts related to WannaCry virus news taken from the Ministry of Communicaion and Information Technology, Kompas.com and JawaPos.com.<br />Abductive inferences technique was used to draw conclusions by connecting one text to other texts. The different tendencies in media’s linguistic features and ideologies were described using critical discourse analysis and Fairclough’s three interrelated analysis processes (i.e. the dimension of text description, the dimension of discourse practice by textual interpretation, and the dimension of socio-cultural by text explanation). The results of this study showed that the three media had some differences in both of their<br />linguistic features and ideology.</p>

<p><em>This research aim to understand the text, the discourse practice, and the sociocultural practice which Suara Merdeka showed in their publications about bribery case of Semarang’s RAPBD 2012 which claims Soemarmo.</em></p><p><em>The theoritical of this study required critical paradigm. Stuart Hall in Eriyanto (2008) wrote that mass media is not produce a news, but they determine reality through words.</em></p><p><em>The research method used critical discourse analysis by Norman Fairclough. Three steps analysis by Faircough are text analysis, discourse practice analysis, and sociocultural analysis. The texts have been analyzed by linguistic, grammar and vocabulary. Discourse practice analysis related to production and consumtion process. Sociocultural analysis related to outside elements of the texts. The researcher collected data by text analyzed and interviewed a journalist and the editor in chief of Suara Merdeka. The study has been done in Semarang.</em></p><p><em>This research found that Suara Merdeka wrote the text about this case very carefully. There was a special agenda setting to write about it. The socioculture practice analysis showed that the capitalist has intervented the editorial.</em></p>

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the researcher aims are to review some key problems of approaches to research on mass media text from point of view discourse analytical and to present an argument, as well as a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) structures for analysis of mass media discourse. The researcher regards a number of areas of critical research interest in mass media discourse locally and elsewhere. An instance of actual CDA researches on mass media discourse is reviewed in terms of topics of obviously popular interest among society, before listing methodological, as well as the topical plan by a main support in the field for further work. This paper concludes that CDA’s multidisciplinary approach helps to understand and aware of the hidden socio-political issues and agenda in all kinds of areas of language as a social practice to empower the individual and social groups.

The focus of this paper is to examine the discourse of an academic leader through emails. This paper will examine the micro and macro level of leadership discourse. To analyze the data, Fairclough’s (1993) framework which includes the analysis of textual practice, discourse practice, and social practice will be used. In analyzing the discourse at the micro level, the paper will examine the textual practice which includes vocabulary, grammar, and text structure. In addition, genre and style of text and social practice will also be analyzed.

This research aims at exploring the linguistic features employed by advertisers in Cosmopolitan Magazine beauty product advertisements. The study mainly focuses on the use of language in beauty product advertisements and the strategies employed by the advertisers in shaping the ideal concept of women’s beauty. This research is conducted under the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis proposed by Fairclough that focuses on a conception of discourse as text (micro level), discourse practice (meso level) and sociocultural practice (macro level). Its aim is to explore the relationships among language, ideology and power and to find out how advertisers persuade the women to buy their products. The result shows that there are some linguistic features employed by the advertisers i.e. positive and negative adjective, pronouns, imperatives, and modality. Meanwhile the strategies employed are positive-self representation, irrational representation, celebrity endorsement, and clinical test proof

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how Malaysian CEO Statements represent corporate social responsibility (CSR). Design/methodology/approach – A corpus of 27 CEO Statements was analyzed using Fairclough's three-dimensional critical discourse analysis (CDA) model, which proposes analyzing text, discourse practice and social practice. The analysis emphasized image and language features in text while it explored intertextuality in discourse practice and ideology in social practice. Findings – The analysis revealed that selected image and language features contribute to six themes about CSR, namely achievement, identification, aspiration, disclosure, recognition and appreciation. The analysis also revealed that policies, standards and studies are often cited to reduce a credibility gap. These analyses indicate that CEO Statements represent CSR as a corporation's philanthropic initiatives for stakeholders. This representation reflects the ideology of CEO Statements. It establishes corporations as an agent of positive change in society, which helps to improve the social legitimacy of corporations. Research limitations/implications – Since the corpus was limited to ten corporations in three years, the findings might not be representative of the genre of CEO Statements. The corpus could be extended to include CEO Statements from other years, countries and languages and it can launch a productive enterprise in intercultural studies. Originality/value – This paper demonstrates CDA as an approach to understand CEO Statements. It may be useful to people practicing and teaching corporate communication because it encourages them to consider the meaning implied by image and language features, which can influence the meaning of CEO Statements.

From the perspective of crisis management, this research examines how Starbucks chief executive officer (CEO) extended corporate apologies to the stakeholders via an interview video and a monologue video under the framework of multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA). The apologies offered by Starbucks CEO in an interview with ABC News and a monologue were analyzed to illustrate textual, and visual characteristics. The analysis of text, discourse practice and social practice was conducted to explore apology discourse strategies employed by Starbucks CEO. The results indicated that corporate apology discourse contributes to crisis management and revealed the interplay of corporate apology discourse, crisis management, and social background.

In Ireland, negative stereotypes of the Traveller population have long been a part of society. The beliefs that surround this minority group may not be based in fact, yet negative views persist such that Travellers find themselves excluded from mainstream society. The language used in discourse plays a critical role in the way Travellers are represented. This study analyses the discourse in the public policy regarding Travellers in the National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy (NTRIS) 2017–2021. This study performs a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the policy with the overall aims of showing signs of the power imbalance through the use of language and revealing the discourses used by elite actors to retain power and sustain existing social relations. The key findings show that Travellers are represented as a homogenous group that exists outside of society. They have no control over how their social identity is constructed. The results show that the constructions of negative stereotypes are intertextually linked to previous policies, and the current policy portrays them in the role of passive patients, not powerful actors. The discursive practice creates polarity between the “settled” population and the “Travellers”, who are implicitly blamed by the state for their disadvantages. Through the policy, the government disseminates expert knowledge, which legitimises the inequality and supports this objective “truth”. This dominant discourse, which manifests in wider social practice, can facilitate racism and social exclusion. This study highlights the need for Irish society to change the narrative to support an equitable representation of Travellers.

The research in hand has the objectives to analyse how ideologies are expressed through discourse practices in Western media; how a discourse practice and a linguistic strategy in terms of lexical choices are employed in portraying ideologies in media about Pakistan. Grounded on the theoretical framework of Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach of critical discourse analysis and model of Ideology which is the most appropriate to study media discourse, the data will be analysed qualitatively. The method of the current research is critical discourse analysis. The research revolves around the Pakistani socio-political events in Western media from the perspective of a global issue that is a war on terrorism. The research has objectives to investigate what and how Western media has used lexical choices to depict a certain ideology about Pakistan to the world.

Abstract In this article, I examine a corpus of texts that address the 1973 war; these texts cover the period from 1981 to 2011, marking the beginning and end of Hosni Mubarak’s rule. Utilizing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), I explore how Mubarak’s regime employed the war to legitimize its power and defend its policies by deploying longstanding culturally-embedded ‘macro themes’. These macro themes refer to the war as an overwhelming and undisputed ‘Egyptian victory’ and, more significantly, they portray Mubarak himself as ‘war personified/war personalized’. The analysis of linguistic and extra-linguistic features in al-Ahram newspaper (the mouthpiece of the state), among other media texts on the war, show how the discursive construction was made consistent, coherent and resonant in a managed context that characterized the political and media landscapes. Depending on unique access to those who produced, edited and even censored the texts under analysis, this method unravels a complex set of cultural messages and conventions about the war, and fills a lacuna in the literature by offering insight into the deliberate and well-coordinated process of shaping and reshaping a specific discourse for a specific purpose.
