Remote operation of continuous miners has enhanced the health and safety of underground miners in many respects; however, numerous fatal and non-fatal continuous miner struck-by accidents have occurred when using remote controls. In an effort to prevent these injuries, NIOSH researchers at Pittsburgh Research Laboratory examined the workplace relationships between continuous miner operators and various tramming modes of the equipment using motion captured data, predicted operator response times, and field- of- view data to determine causes of operator-machine struck-by events in a virtual mine environment. Factors studied included machine speed, direction of escape, operator facing orientation relative to the machine, work posture, distance from machine, and operator anthropometry. Close proximity to the machine, high machine tramming speeds, a right-facing orientation and operator positioning near the tail all resulted in high risk of being struck. It is hoped that this data will provide an improved rationale for operator positioning for remotely operated continuous miners.

AbstractThe production process of ST 37777 in PT Ebako Nusantara uses a schedule based on the processes performed using existing historical data from the production process that has been done. PT Ebako Nusantara is a manufacturing industry engaged in furnitur located in Terboyo, Semarang, Central Java. In the production process ST 37777, there are 11 machines and 16 jobs where each job has a different sequence of machines. The existing scheduling for ST 37777 type product with jobshop type has not been applied a determination in the timing and sequence of effective machine work so that many jobs are finished too late. For that required an effective engine scheduling so that it can meet the production time of orders in accordance with the agreed. Jobshop scheduling is needed to maximize efficiency and resource utilities on the production floor. Determination of this machine schedule aims to minimize the makespan using WINQSB Software job scheduling module. The method used is the method of Short Processing Time. The scheduling result using WINQSB software obtained makespan to 15 hours with scheduling result no job is late and all job done in sequence. Keywords: Jobshop Scheduling; Short Processing Time; Makespan Minimization

Air pollution by wood dust in furniture production sites is an important hygiene issue. The dust is created by all types of wood and wood-based material machining, and its concentration in the working zone surrounding the machining stand depends on the effectiveness of the dust exhaust system. In present research, three setups of the dust extraction system for a conventional table sawing machine are considered while machining particleboards. The results showed a high impact of the exhaust system connection setup on the dust concentration in the air surrounding the sawing machine work stand. The use of both main and auxiliary sawdust extraction connectors together ensured the highest clearness of the air, with only 0.5 mg/m3 of dust concentration. Closing the upper hood leads to a concentration five times higher, while disconnecting it results in a ten times higher dust content. The finest dust particles (<1 µm), however, are the most numerous in the case of closing the hood.

One operator with multi-machine operating mode is an important part of the analysis of operator-machine work, because it takes it into consideration that the utilization of both machines and operators. It is necessary to study its classification, application and analysis process, besides, a mathematical model is constructed to analyze the differences in efficiency for operators and machines, which are caused by the difference of machine assignment amount. Finally, The process simulation and verification is based on the platform of Plant simulation.

In this paper, we discuss the grounding of the Royal Majesty, reconstructed from the perspective of the crew. The aim is particularly to understand the role of automation in shaping crew assessments and actions. Automation is often introduced because of quantitative promises that: it will reduce human error; reduce workload; and increase efficiency. But as demonstrated by the Royal Majesty, as well as by numerous research results, automation has qualitative consequences for human work and safety, and does not simply replace human work with machine work. Automation changes the task it was meant to support; it creates new error pathways, shifts consequences of error further into the future and delays opportunities for error detection and recovery. By going through the sequence of events that preceded the grounding of the Royal Majesty, we highlight the role that automation plays in the success and failure of navigation today. We then point to future directions on how to make automated systems into better team players.
