Ernst Kretschmer was an assistant to Professor Robert Gaupp in Tübingen. His contributions to the field of psychopathology can be reduced to two main themes: the first consists in the analysis of a particular form of delusion called “sensitive delusion of reference,” developed in his book Der Sensitive Beziehungswahn (The Sensitive Delusion of Reference) in 1918; the second concerns the construction of a constitutional typology which attempts to identify, on the basis of the temperamental and physical-constitutional characteristics of the subjects, all possible degrees and steps leading to the two major psychoses: manic-depressive psychosis and schizophrenia. While the somatic-based constitutional type now belongs to the history of psychiatry, the attention to the comprehensibility of the paths leading to the area of major psychoses remains an unavoidable point of reference for those who refuse to give up the attempt to introduce the dimension of subjectivity and understanding into the area of psychosis.

Sasang constitutional medicine (SCM) is a unique Korean traditional medicine that classifies human beings as four distinct types named Sasang constitutional types (SCTs), based on physiologic, physical, and psychological traits. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that specific constitutional types are associated with chronic diseases, but no study has investigated the relationship between SCTs and sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to examine the association in a large population-based study. Data from 1,204 participants who completed questionnaires for life style, anthropometric evaluation, and biochemical analysis were analyzed. Classification of the SCTs was done using an integrated diagnostic method. Sarcopenia was defined as appendicular skeletal muscle mass/height2less than one standard deviation below the gender-specific normal mean of a younger group. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to assess whole body composition. The prevalence of sarcopenia was8.6%in the Tae-eum (TE) type,44.7%in the So-eum (SE) type, and20.7%in the So-yang (SY) type. Multivariate analysis revealed that the SE and SY types had 9.22 (5.06–16.81;P<0.0001) and 2.90 (1.76–4.76;P<0.0001) greater odds of sarcopenia compared to the TE type, respectively. Our results show that the SE and SY types are significantly associated with increased prevalence of sarcopenia.

AbstractThe study evaluated shape of the foramen magnum (FM) in dog with regard to its constitutional type (small, medium and large breeds) and morphotype (brachycephalic, mesaticephalic and dolichocephalic dogs). We used multi-slice CT scanner to examine occipital area of 138 purebreds dogs. Two studied groups could be distinguished – living animals undergoing standard diagnostic CT procedure (

AbstractThe notion that individuals differ in their physical and psychical makeup, and that these differences predispose them to various illnesses, is found throughout medical history in various healing traditions. In this paper, the authors address the use of the concept of constitution and constitutional type in homoeopathy, as well as in psychiatry, and describe an approach toward validating the existence of such types in the population.

During qualified sport selection special attention should be paid to those features and abilities that have a great influence on the effectiveness, and those, that are mainly under the influence of genetic factor. Such morphogenetic markers of sports selection include, firstly, the constitutional features of athletes, in particular the shape of the chest. The purpose of work is to determine the differences between the anthropometric dimensions of the chest between female volleyball players of high level of athletic skill and non-sportsmen, who belonged to different constitutional types. On the base of the Scientific-Research Center of the Vinnytsya National Pirogov Memorial Medical University an anthropo-somatotypological investigation of 113 female volleyball players of high level athletic skill (from 16 to 20 years old) was done. The control group included 204 practically healthy young women, who were not engaged in sports of the corresponding age. Anthropometric research was performed according to the V. V. Bunak (1941) method, somatotypological study was based on the estimated modification of the Heath-Carter method (1990). In young women, who were not engaged in sports, more than in half of the cases were indicated constitutional types, which were characterized by good development of fatty body composition. Between female volleyball players were dominated individuals with mesomorphic somatotype (26.66%), ectomorphic somatotype (23.01%), ecto-mesomorphic somatotype (23.89%), and representatives of the intermediate somatotype (23.01%) were almost uniformly represented in the sample. The analysis of the results was carried out in the licensing program "Statistica 5.5" using nonparametric methods of estimating the parameters. We have found that the female volleyball players of the ectomorphic somatotype have the smallest anthropometric dimensions of the chest, as compared with athletes of other constitutional groups. In the mesomorphs female volleyball players all transverse and the most of overall sizes of the chest were the largest. Parameters of the athletes with the ecto-mesomorphic somatotype were slightly small to the size of the somatometric parameters of the mesomorphs, but they had the highest values of the anterior-posterior size of the chest. Female volleyball players with intermediate somatotype had larger values of the chest size than volleyball players with ectomorphic somatotype, although no significant difference was found when comparing them. It was found, that the most of the overall, transverse, and anterior-posterior dimensions of the chest in female volleyball players are statistically significantly higher than that of girls, who were not engaged in sports, and belonged to the same constitutional type as athletes. We have made a conclusion that belonging to one of the constitutional type does not provide similarity of morphometric parameters of the chest in persons with different levels of physical activity.

Aim. Determination of the peculiarities of the formation of constitutional types in ontogenesis in animals of the modern large white breed of pigs in comparison with the wild european boar (Sus scrofa ferus) is a form of the breeding process, that has both theoretical and practical significance. Methods. The objects of the study are embryos, fetuses, newborns and adult animals of large white breed of pigs and wild boar in different periods of ontogenesis using zootechnical, morphological and mathematical-statistic methods of research. Results. Individual development of animals can be conventionally divided into two main periods: morphogenetic (or embryonic prenatal) and postmorphogenetic (or post-embryonic, postnatal). The morphogenetic period is the most crucial period in the ontogenesis of animals, the period of the highest activity of genes, which provides a fundamental placement and development of the basic functional systems of the body. Therefore, for the consideration of signs of embryonic development becomes one of the criteria of artificial selection of individuals for their natural hereditarily determined type of exteriors, constitutions, and metabolism. It particularly reflects the leading role of embryogenesis in the formation of the body structure and productive qualities of animals. Conclusions. For the species practice of selection, breeding and domestication consisted of changes in quantitative and qualitative relationships in growth and development, which, combined with subsequent targeted selection, contributed to the formation of modern breeds of pigs. The constitutional type analysis of the animals formation in ontogenesis has the most selective significance, which is primarily manifested in the exterior features. Domestication of the Sus scrofa consisted of consequently the exterior is expediently evaluated at different stages of ontogenesis, starting with the embryonic period and, especially, from birth. Keywords: phylogeny, domestics, ontogenesis, constitution, selection, species, breed.

One of the promising directions in the search for regularities in the course and, consequently, treatment of vertebrogenic diseases of the nervous system (VNS) is an orientation towards integrative principles of diagnosis based on taking into account the constitutional type of a person and constitutionally determined features of his psyche, physiology and body morphology. Constitutional diagnostics is based precisely on these three whales identified by Claudius Galen. The introduction of constitutional diagnostics into the patient examination system immediately introduces a certain order into the medical strategy and tactics.

There were 52 healthy people. Of them, 28 were in junior courses and 24 were in senior courses. According to the results of psychological tests there were identified three types of thinking: visual-figurative and verbal-logical, intuitive. Kirlian photographs of the surveyed individuals fingers in the experimental device «REC 1» were done. The method of acquiring, processing, and subsequent analysis included analog-to-digital conversion Kirlian images to highlight areas of illumination of the individual fingers, binarization of images with the threshold brightness, calculation of the area of corona glow. The obtained results complemented results of psychological tests, revealed mixed types of thinking, their expression, the dependence of the period of study at the university. To identify the emotional characteristics of the students associated with the constitutional type of the individual, selectively kronograf research on Polarod color photographic film with computer processing of scanned images carried out. Check radiation around the fingers of people surveyed in the color film, determination of the ratios of colors in the image, their energy allowed to determine the type of emotional activation of student body's potential abilities that affects motivation and optimize learning at the university.
