Genes for anther culture response (ACR) need to be mapped to enable efficient transfer of the trait to unresponsive but agronomically desirable clones. The objective of this study was to find extremes for ACR in a segregating population to target genes controlling this trait using bulk segregant analysis. Populations resulting from backcrosses (BC) of a diploid interspecific clone [CP2: Solanum chacoense (chc: low ACR) and S. phureja (phu: high ACR)] to both parents were used to characterize two phases of androgenesis in a preliminary study: microspore embryogenesis and embryo regeneration. Among 24 plants from each BC, consistently high- and low-responding genotypes with regard to embryo production were identified. Low ACR clones in each BC produced from 0.0–0.1 embryos per anther (EPA), whereas high ACR clones in the chc and phu BC produced from 1.4–2.9 and 2.8–7.5 EPA, respectively. The frequency of embryos regenerating into plants ranged from 3% to 20% for the chc high EPA clones and 12% to 64% for the phu high EPA clones. Ploidy of regenerated plants was determined by flow cytometry. The frequency of monoploid regenerants among the high EPA clones ranged from 3.6% to 68%. Since these populations showed sufficient genetic variation for ACR, a series of statistically designed experiments were conducted to develop high and low ACR bulks. From four groups of phenotypically characterized PBC plants, a high ACR bulk (–x = 4.9 EPA; n = 14) and a low ACR bulk (–x = 0.12 EPA; n =9) were constructed.

Exogenous silicon (Si) can enhance plant resistance to various abiotic factors causing osmotic stress. The objective of this research was to evaluate the application of 1 and 2 mM Si to plants under normal conditions and under osmotic stress. Morelos A-98 rice seedlings, were treated with 1 and 2 mM SiO2 for 28 d. Subsequently, half of the plants were subjected to osmotic stress with the addition of 10% polyethylene glycol (PEG) 8000; and continued with the addition of Si (0, 1 and 2 mM SiO2) for both conditions. The application of Si under both conditions increased chlorophyll b in leaves, root volume, as well as fresh and dry biomass of roots. Interestingly, the number of tillers, shoot fresh and dry biomass, shoot water content, concentration of total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a/b ratio, and the concentration of total sugars and proline in shoot increased with the addition of Si under osmotic stress conditions. The addition of Si under normal conditions decreased the concentration of sugars in the roots, K and Mn in roots, and increased the concentration of Fe and Zn in shoots. Therefore, Si can be used as a potent inorganic biostimulant in rice Morelos A-98 since it stimulates plant growth and modulates the concentration of vital biomolecules and essential nutrients.

Due to the increase in the consumption of natural products, there has been a growing use and commercialization of bee pollen, thus, the need for a greater quality control regarding the physical-chemical and microbiological characteristics of this product is justified. In this way, the research aimed to determine the physical-chemical, microbiological and sensorial characteristics of four brands of dehydrated pollen, marketed in natural products houses in different parts of the city of Belém-Pará. Microbiological (aerobic mesophilic bacteria, fungi and yeasts, Coliformes at 45°, Salmonella sp and Staphylococcus aureus) and sensorial analyzes were carried out in the physicochemical analyzes (moisture, ashes, lipids, proteins, pH, free acidity, total sugars). The results obtained were within the parameters of quality allowed by the Brazilian legislation for dehydrated pollen. Regarding the microbiological analysis, all brands showed absence of Staphylococus aureus and Salmonella spp. For the sensorial analysis, the C mark presented better results for both flavor and aroma, confirming the quality of the dehydrated pollen commercialized in Belém-Pa.

Honey is a very complex biological product. It has great diversity, giving it a multitude of properties, both nutritionally and therapeutically. This study aimed to study the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of honeys collected during the dry and rainy seasons in the different phytogeographical areas of Benin. The study revealed that all honeys had pH, water content, electrical conductivity, ash content, free acidity, total sugars, and reducing sugars, respectively, ranging within 3.65–4.09; 12.07–13.16%; 530.25–698.50 μs/cm; 0.42–0.53%; 35.67–40.52 meq/kg; 60–70%; and 58–70%. Moisture content, total sugars, and reducing sugars varied very significantly (p<0.05top<0.001) from one area to another and from one season to another. However, only the production season has a significant influence (p<0.05) on the pH of the honey. With regard to the ash content, free acidity, and electrical conduction, no significant difference (p>0.05) between the zones or between the seasons was observed. The results of the microbiological characterization showed that there is heterogeneity in the microbial load. These results have shown that these honeys meet international standards and their characterization will make it possible to obtain Beninese quality labels.

Purpose The purpose of this paper looks into how the Islamic legal maxims (ILM) could provide a basis for Sharīʿah audit practices in assisting the institution’s managerial practice to achieve Maqasid al Shari’ah (MS). Design/methodology/approach The findings of the study recorded in this paper are based on a single case study selected from a preliminary study. The qualitative approach was used, where two phases of a semi-structured interview were conducted on the targeted participants in their natural settings. Findings It was found that with the implementation of Sharīʿah audit practices, ILM supports the achievement of MS by Islamic banks. With this, the income generated by these banking institutions is halal, and all business transactions and operations will not violate the Sharīʿah principles. Furthermore, the ILM includes principles such as “certainty is not overruled by doubt,” “matters determined according to intentions,” “the norm in transactions is that of permissibility,” “harm must be eliminated” and “judgment is to be based on knowledge and understanding.” Social implications The findings of this study have provided valuable information that would lead Muslim auditors to exhibit a strong character while abiding by Islamic principles. Originality/value MS is strongly recommended in Islamic banking institutions because of the significant relationship between MS and the objectives of business transactions where wealth must be protected in the prevention of incoming hardships occurring in society. Moreover, this paper focuses on the application of ILM in the Sharīʿah audit practices as a part of the Sharīʿah governance in Islamic banks.

<p>It is well recognized that the classical biological and chemical markers of environmental pollution do not necessarily indicate the presence or absence of emerging threats to public health, such as waterborne viruses and genotoxicants. The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the presence of material of enteroviruses (EV), rotavirus (RV) and adenovirus (AdV) and genotoxicity in water samples from points of routine monitoring of water quality in the main course of the Sinos River. The points are classified into different levels of pollution in accordance to the Brazilian federal regulations. Viral genomes from EV, AdV were detected in two of the 4 collection points regardless of the level of urbanisation of the surrounding areas. In contrast, genotoxicity was not observed in piava (Leporinus obtusidens) fingerlings cultivated on these same water samples. Results were compared with classical physical, chemical and microbiological parameters. There was no clear evidence of association between any of the classical markers and the presence of viral genomes in the water samples tested.</p>

English Title: Impact of pretreatment with salt (NaCl) and drying on the nutritional and microbiological characteristics of onion bulb The production of onion greatly contributes to food security and the fight against poverty in Burkina Faso. However, several constraints including post-harvest losses hinder the development of this sector. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of drying process on the quality of onion. Onion after trimming, was pretreated (NaCl at 5%) or not and dried with a gas dryer Atesta (60-65 °C, 10-12h). Nutritional and microbiological characteristics of fresh and dried products were determined using standard methods. Based on the dry mater, results showed that fresh onion contains 5.19% of ash, 1.7% of fat, 12.16% of proteins and 47.56% of total sugars. After drying, ash, fat, proteins and total sugars content varied from 2.96 to 31.31%, 0.59 to 0.77%, 3.58 to 7.78% and 36.88 to 49.56%, respectively. Despite the effect of pretreatment and drying process, the content of iron, manganese, magnesium, calcium and zinc remained interesting. The dried onions, in particular those pretreated with salt presented good microbiological quality. The dissemination of onion drying technology will allow to add value to onion in Burkina Faso. Keywords: Gas-drier, process, quality, Burkina Faso.
