A Corpus-based Comparative Study of Literary Translation Styles: Taking the C-E Translations of the 11th “The World of English Cup” Translation Contest as an Example

The paper makes a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the translation style differences between the reference translation (Lin’s Version) and the first prize-winning translation (Liu’s Version) of The Original Mission of Culture in the “11th Hangzhou Normal University-English World Cup Translation Contest” from lexical, syntactic and discourse features. The translation styles of the two translators are found to show similarities and differences. The differences are mainly reflected in the lexical and sentence dimensions. Lin’s Version shows higher lexical richness and complexity and sophisticated sentence patterns, while Liu’s Version is more reader-friendly, featured by changing narrative perspectives, adopting the explicit translation method, and reflecting the explanatory trend. The similarities are mainly embodied in discourse features. Both translation versions use conjunctions to achieve discourse cohesion with similar effects. But given lexicon, syntax, and other factors, Liu’s Version is better in readability. The main causes for the different translation styles of the two versions are related to the translator’s identity and professional background, as well as the translator’s emotional orientation towards the contest.

This study aims to analyze the classification ability in animal biosystematics learning as the basis for making numerical taxonomies in biology education students. The method in this research consists of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Descriptive method is used for qualitative analysis and correlation method for quantitative analysis. The mixed methods strategy uses simultaneous triangulation because both qualitative and quantitative data are collected at the same time, then compared to identify convergence of differences or combinations of data. The number of students was 57 people who were divided into 11 groups. Ability classification is determined based on indicators that refer to science process skills. The classification ability indicator is made into six indicators, where each indicator is broken down into four sub indicators. The results of the analysis show that the classification abilities of the six indicators are: (1) recording each observation separately 89.04%, (2) looking for similarities and differences of 66.23%, (3) contrasting the features of 57.89%, (4) comparing of group characteristics 67.32%, (5) determining the basis for grouping 73.46%, and (6) connecting the results of observations 76.32%. The ability of individuals to make classifications in animal biosystematic learning reached 71.72%, while in groups it was 71.98%. Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the classification ability of participants in animal biosystematic learning is good with the medium category, this can support in making numerical taxonomy.

The existing metadiscourse studies on the comparison of English and Chinese language are relatively few, especially on spoken discourse. The present study examines the use of personal metadiscourse in English and Chinese commencement speeches based on Ädel’s reflexive model of metadiscourse and its adaption. The corpus for this study comprises 60 commencement speeches – 30 Chinese and 30 English – delivered in prestigious American and Chinese universities respectively. This study investigates (1) The similarities and differences in the use of personal metadiscourse in English and Chinese commencement speeches; (2) the possible reasons behind these similarities and differences. Qualitative and quantitative analysis indicates that American speeches feature markedly more personal metadiscourse than Chinese speeches. Textual analysis further reveals some similarities and differences in the discourse functions of personal metadiscourse between two sets of texts due to genre characteristics and social-cultural differences. The findings of this study provide some insight into the classification of Chinese metadiscourse and the awareness of cross-cultural communication.

La investigación se desarrolla con 300 infantes de doce centros escolares de preescolar en cinco comunidades aledañas a los Manglares y Humedales de Tuxpan. El objetivo fue determinar si una intervención educativa cambia la percepción sobre su medio. Se realiza un diagnóstico solicitando a los pequeños que elaboraran un dibujo bajo el título ¿Cómo es mi medio ambiente?. Se diseña e implementa una intervención educativa pertinente al contexto y alineada con el currículum Programa de Estudios 2011/ Preescolar, específicamente con el campo formativo de Exploración y Conocimiento del mundo, fomentando una actitud reflexiva sobre la importancia del aprovechamiento adecuado de los recursos naturales. De las actividades planeadas destaca el teatro guiñol como una experiencia significativa, en la que a través de la historia narrada, se describe: personajes, tema y problemática destacando rasgos geográficos y sociales familiares a los niños. Se evalúa los cambios en la percepción ambiental utilizando una metodología descriptiva de carácter cualitativo y cuantitativo a través del análisis de un post-dibujo como instrumento de comunicación no verbal. Los resultados indican que los niños mostraron cambios en la percepción que tenían del ambiente integrando a su concepción factores bióticos y sociales, también mostraron un cambio en la representatividad y valoración de la vegetación local, manifestando cambios importantes en el sentido de pertenencia a la región. Finalmente integraron a su concepción elementos y rasgos aportados por el contenido abordado a través de la obra de teatro guiñol en la concepción de la vegetación y fauna local. The research is conducted with 300 infants twelve schools from preschool in five communities near the mangroves and wetlands of Tuxpan. The objective was to determine whether an educational intervention changes the perception of their environment. A message requesting to small diagnostic work out a drawing takes place under the title What is my environment ?. It is designed and implement an appropriate educational intervention context and aligned with the curriculum Curriculum 2011 / Preschool, specifically the training field exploration and knowledge of the world, encouraging a reflexive attitude about the importance of proper use of natural resources. Planned activities of the puppet theater stands out as a meaningful experience, which through the story told, is described: characters, theme and geographical highlighting social problems familiar to children and features. Evaluates changes in environmental perception using a methodology descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis through a post-drawing as a means of nonverbal communication. The results indicate that children showed changes in their perception of the environment by integrating its conception biotic and social factors, also showed a change in the representation and appreciation of local vegetation, showing significant changes in the sense of belonging to the region. Finally integrated into their design elements and features provided by the content addressed through the work of puppet theater in the design of vegetation and fauna.

Abstract The pressure to distinguish high quality from lower quality law journals is intensifying. To contribute to this debate, citation-based and peer review-based ranking of law journals are paralleled in the paper, using qualitative and quantitative analysis. It is found that all law journals that are considered as journals of the highest quality by legal experts are also ranked highly in Web of Science (WoS) and that 40% of the law journals categorised as ‘internationally leading’ by the peers are not listed in WoS. This paper explores what the editors of some of the internationally leading law journals that are not listed in the WoS think about applying to be listed in it. The paper offers data to support the contention that legal scholarship is characterised by regionalism in academic publishing and citation patterns. It is submitted that there is no perfect indicator of quality, and that no evaluation system will ever convince every legal scholar in the world of its value. WoS could be adopted as a rigorous and internationally recognised index for law journals only if it were aligned more closely with the Leiden Manifesto.

This study is a survey from differences Universities of Cote d’ivoire, in order to understand the challenges facing by searchers during their scientific research. The study developed questionnaire consisting of five hypotheses, among diversities of challenges encountered by scientific searchers around the World. The choice of this five hypothesis is due to the differences characteristics such as the history of the nations and because Cote d’ivoire is less-developed country. This paper adopted a qualitative and quantitative analysis research strategy to examine the difficulties facing by searchers. This Work used two methods a semi –structured interview, and experimentation. Qualitative data has been collected through interview while quantitative data by experimentation. Our finding confirmed the difficulty encountered by the differences searchers at Universities or institutions searchers, or institutions searchers to achieve a fruitful outcomes research for its own interest or for participation in country development projects.

This article discusses the similarities and differences found in some Spanish and American television advertisements broadcast at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. To carry out this study, forty advertisements shown on television in the two countries during the months of March and April 2020 were analysed. Qualitative and quantitative analysis considered the cultural dimensions of identity, uncertainty avoidance and masculinity. In addition, the Chi-square formula was also applied in order to confirm that the differences found in both groups of adverts were not significantly important. The results show that a great deal of similar messages and even expressions was conveyed to both audiences in both countries, although some differences were also found. Besides, the main goal of these ads in both groups was to comfort the audience, and not to clearly promote or advertise the product. Thus, this study demonstrates once again that despite the differences that these two cultural groups display, and which are usually portrayed in intercultural literature, the context highly influences the values typically assigned to a linguistic community. That is reflected in the discourse of speakers, and it is the reason why we can find values opposite to those expected in a cultural group.
