Smell and taste – of the five senses these are the two most strongly stimulated by smoking tobacco. The article presents an in-depth analysis of the reflection of both these forms of sensory perception in textual and visual sources concerning the early consumption of the herb. In a first step, tobacco’s changing reception, first as medicine and then as stimulant, is traced through the years of its increasing distribution in Europe, starting in the middle of the 16th century. As this overview reveals, at that time the still little known substance gave rise to new forms of sense perception. Following recent studies on smell and gustation, which have stressed the need to take into account the interactions between these senses, the article probes the manifold stimulation of the senses by tobacco with reference to allegorical representations and genre scenes addressing the five senses. The smoking of tobacco was thematized in both of these art forms as a means of visualizing either smell or taste. Yet, these depictions show no indication of any deliberate engagement with the exchange of sense data between mouth and nose. The question posed at the end of this paper is whether this holds true also for early smoker’s still lifes. In the so-called toebakjes or rookertjes, a subgenre of stilllife painting that, like tobacco, was still a novelty at the beginning of the 17th century, various smoking paraphernalia – such as rolled or cut tobacco, pipes and tins – are arrayed with various kinds of foods and drinks. Finally, the article addresses a selection of such smoker’s still lifes, using the toebakje by Pieter Claesz., probably the first of its kind, as a starting point and the work by Georg Flegel as a comparative example. Through their selection of objects, both offer a complex image of how tobacco engages different senses.

Abstrac

The article presents the results of an investigation that had as objective to analyze the socio-cognitive processes of the ideologically patriarchal language in the representation of the death of women, using micro and macro discursive and iconic resources of the newspaper. Abstract. The Postmodern thought stands as one of the philosophical movements that have achieved a greater repercussion in present times. The Difference Feminism, a current arising in the 60s and 70s, converges in many of its premises with those generally attributed to Postmodernity. In this article both trends are put in dialogue, starting from the revision of some of feminist theorist Luce Irigaray’s approaches that refer to the later theorized ‘Death of the Subject’ - one of the axes of Postmodern thought. This thesis translates into Irigaray as critic of the construction of the ‘Man’ as an universal and central subject in patriarchal order, which defines women as men’s opposite and subsequently renders them deprived of their own subjectivity. Irigaray challenges the existence of this universal subject through her call to discover women’s own subjectivity as a starting point from which an alternative symbolic order can be established. However, it is also possible to identify some contradictions between both theories. Keywords: posmodernism, feminism, difference, subjectivity, phallocentrism, language.

Abstract

This article seeks to show the effects of the incursion of Chilean State in the struggle against violence towards women in the domestic sphere. For this, we focus on political and legal devices. We will show the role of the Courts of Justice and National Women’s Service (SERNAM) as instruments of attention and protection for the people affected by the issue, during the latest governments of Michelle Bachelet (2006 – 2010) and Sebastian Piñera (2010-2014). During the development of the analysis, it will be characterized how the familiarist approach of the law comes into tension with the devices proposed by the State.

Abstract

Islamic feminisms were born in the 90’s and since then they have been subject to criticism by those who believe that it is not possible to fight for women's rights in the framework of a religion. This paper explores the production of urban spaces as deathscapes, or spaces that are defined by death. We probe the ways in which these spaces are produced by the material content of the spaces themselves, and the discursive representations of those spaces found in popular media. We take as our empirical starting point personal encounters with dead animal bodies in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies, we juxtapose personal experiences with death in the city with popular representations of Baltimore, as well as a spatial analysis of the geographies of non-human death. Using mixed methodologies, we tease out and highlight the ways in which death, dying, bodies, and violence are used to produce urban deathscapes. Our analysis shows how the production of death and deathscapes are inherently uneven spatial processes, which work in tandem to (re)produce certain spaces as deadly. Furthermore, we illustrate how these spaces are produced in part by discourse, politics, representation, and the material presence of non-human death, challenging what we might think of as being capable of producing space, and broadening the concept of deathscapes. Ultimately we conclude that producing urban spaces as deadly is a means by which capital seeks to reproduce itself, and, through harnessing the power of the non-human dead to produce space, utilize nature to produce new forms of urban capital.

From ancient times, some spaces have been understood to be more sacred than others. Even though many of these spaces have no specific religious meaning, there have been new religious movements which can easily be seen in daily life. In order to understand the current dynamics of religion, a focus on the material presence of religion (religious buildings, sites and artefacts in urban spaces) is a fruitful starting point. Thus, the objective of this study is to explore the potential meanings of the sacred in urban spaces, and the effects of these meanings or characterizations of the sacred have on places. Moreover, the focus is on analysing new manifestations of the religious and the sacred in urban space, as well as the ways in which material traces mediate diverse practices, discourses and effects in the various domains of the sacred. By investigating the alignments of these two fields, the city and the sacred, this study sheds new light on the metropolis of London, which manifests both religious diversity and multiple modernities via traces of the sacred in urban spaces. The results show that sacred traces in urban places have a prominent image that many residents and visitors fail to appreciate in their daily lives. The study concludes with a discussion of findings and implications.

It is here presented the hypothesis of establishing European cultural districts. Its purpose is to systematically valorize the cultural heritage of their territories end their people. The proposal is innovative with contribution to economic and civil life. A cultural district with Gorizia as capital is given as significant exemple. Its importance is that it originates from the tradition of ancient Aquileia and that is meeting point between three very important ethnic groups: Latin, German, Slavic. It is a district of symbolic value also for the enhancement of the strategic axis for Europa “Mitteleuropa-Mediterranean”.
