Abstract

In this article we show the need for a reading of female agency from a multidimensional perspective that addresses the intersection of the gender issue with other variables related to nationality, social class, age, etc. In this sense, the work of the Austrian director Ulrich Seidl allows us to glimpse, in his Paradise Trilogy (2012-2013), the complexity that accompanies the position of women in contemporary Austrian society as a reflection of a West in decline. To establish a critical reading of the discourses on the decision-making and action capacity of the protagonists regarding issues such as sexuality and love contained in this trilogy, we will start from the theory of late modern sexual capital proposed by the sociologists Eva Illouz and Dana Kaplan as well as the sociological theories on love of the first cited author.

A field study employing a shopping simulation compared the purchasing behavior of working and middle class housewives. Explanations of behavioral differences were sought through an analysis of the respondents’ personal attributes. Substantial variation was found in the nature of decision making by social class, even when observed behavior was similar.

In this paper, the authors describe the essential implications of epistemology for modern management theories in practical situations through the era of historical epistemology as postmodernism and neo–modernism by means of case studies (without individual detailed descriptions). The gender issue is mentioned in epistemology and its approach to change and strategy which renders the paper even more relevant. Moreover, scientific acknowledgement of practical stances, as also the moral paradigm, trigger discussion on applicable solutions in the corporate world for the intermediation of tangible and intangible goods and services. Three main areas of the business cycle are selected to represent three pillars of modern social–economic behaviour as our financial legacy in business and management transformation. In the last section of the paper are listed the reasons for narrow– picking, this being the first step in establishing a business model for a transformational strategy in the era of modern management.

The present study examined the role of social class in the career decision-making of undergraduate students attending a private university. Grounded theory was used to describe the process of social class and undergraduates’ career interests and plans. Interviews with undergraduate students ( N = 21) resulted in four categories and 13 axial codes. The grounded theory emerging from the data was labeled, social class fragility. Social class fragility captured the career goals and behaviors associated with participants’ striving for an acceptable career choice, based upon their social class contexts. The contextual factors described by participants included relational influences, social class consciousness, and vocational privilege. Results are discussed in terms of career interventions with college students attending universities that encapsulate upper middle-class norms.

Based on an investigation of the Old Bailey Corpus, this article explores the development and usage patterns of maximizers in Late Modern English (LModE). The maximizers to be considered for inclusion in the study are based on the lists provided in Quirk et al. (1985) and Huddleston & Pullum (2002). The aims of the study were to (i) document the frequency development of maximizers, (ii) investigate the sociolinguistic embedding of maximizers usage (gender, class) and (iii) analyze the sociopragmatics of maximizers based on the speakers’ roles, such as judge or witness, in the courtroom.Of the eleven maximizer types focused on in the investigation, perfectly and entirely were found to dominate in frequency. The whole group was found to rise over the period 1720 to 1913. In terms of gender, social class and speaker roles, there was variation in the use of maximizers across the different speaker groups. Prominently, defendants, but also judges and lawyers, maximized more than witnesses and victims; further, male speakers and higher-ranking speakers used more maximizers. The results were interpreted taking into account the courtroom context and its dialogue dynamics.

Purpose – Altering eating habits are leading to an increase in child obesity rates, especially in lower social class. One possible prevention activity is the implementation of a quality label for children's food. Therefore, this paper seeks to investigate parents' food choice criteria in light of social standing to deduce the possible impact of such a quality label. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 15 qualitative interviews were conducted with parents of different social class. Topics discussed were general diets, grocery shopping behaviour and attitudes towards food quality labels. Findings – Results indicate that parents have similar choice criteria independent of their social class, e.g. quality, price, brand and children's preferences. Nutrition panels and quality labels are not of highest importance. Nonetheless, a need for information exists and their involvement in child nutrition seems to determine the possible impact of quality labels. Research limitations/implications – The qualitative methodology can be seen as a limitation of the study. The influence of involvement has to be further analysed. Originality/value – Some research on the influence of quality labels in general and on family decision-making when shopping for food and with regard to differences in social class does exist. This study contributes to existing research by combining these research streams.

This study investigated experimentally whether social class of people who appear in news stories influences Chilean journalists' ethical reasoning. Based on schema, social identity, and moral development theories, it found that journalists applied lower levels of ethical reasoning when faced with an ethical dilemma associated with the poor, an effect moderated by participants' involvement in the story. Psychological mechanisms—such as involvement, mental elaboration about stories' subjects, and identification with them—influenced participants' ethical thinking.

Stress and strain are the common symptoms of the adolescence period. Naturally, their lives are full of emotion and they cannot consider all the possible alternatives to be taken as their decision making. Behavioral states and emotional attitudes always obstruct adolescent learners to take proper decision at the right time. The investigator in this study has analyzed the responses of adolescent learners from rural schools for their irresolution in decision making based on various emotional changes. The study concludes that emotion largely affects the decision-making capacity of adolescent learners’, especially female learners.
