THE NATIONAL ECOLOGICAL RESERVE (REN): ENVIRONMENT AND MANAGEMENT IMPLICATIONS. The National Ecological Reserve (REN) defined in Decree-Law 93/90 of March 5th is the «basic and diversified biophysical structure that guarantees environmental protection, through the creation of restricted areas» at rish through erosion (littoral or slope), flooding and aquifer recharge. The REN valuation, whose main aspects are referred to here, was carried out by means of an analysis of Municipal Master Plans (PDM) and a survey sent to all local authorities. As it was impossible to analyse the PDM of every district, a dis- trict differentiation was completed based on the biophysical index (Fig. 1 and 2), subsequently crossed by the district human pressure to obtain the district spatial differentiation of the environmental strain (Fig. 3). This allowed a standard district to be selected where the REN was analysed in full detail (Fig. 4 to 9). The survey allowed for the evaluation of the main conflicts in other districts between the REN and the goals of the PDM to be assessed, including the issues concerning the delimitation and the way the REN is seen by the councils and the citizens. The REN includes physical and biophysical systems (slope, fluvial, aquifer and littoral) that tend never to coincide with the administrative divisions. It is urgent that a national network be created of REN areas, planned and managed through more integrated means and an inter-municipal collaboration that can only be effective if environmental education is promoted, on both formal and informal terms.

Purpose – This paper aims to develop a methodological approach to place product analysis that aims to identify the distinctive ideas of places. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology included two stages: first, classifiers of place product uses and technologies were constructed on the basis of the product concept abstraction (Study 1) and then they were used as tools to systematize data about the attributes of city districts and the everyday activities of their residents to further identify product concepts (Study 2). Findings – Product concepts of five Moscow districts were formulated as sets of benefits or district uses (needs satisfied and activities encouraged) offered to residents. The concepts are expressed in terms of typical constructions but reflect the distinctive features and specificities of the districts. Research limitations/implications – Defining places as product concepts pushes the place product analysis, benefit and lifestyle segmentation forward. Additional place product dimensions and investigated places are advised to improve the reliability of the used classifiers as a tool for documentary research. Practical implications – The developed analytical procedure is a much-needed supplement to existing techniques used to shape the product strategies of places. Identifying contradictory uses helps make product decisions that are appropriate in concurrently supporting all these uses, including providing spatial differentiation of the place product. The study results are thus useful for the development of city master plans characterized by long planning horizons and a high degree of conceptualization. Originality/value – The paper proposes a new method for place product analysis that combines the advantages of both standardized and narrative approaches, introducing a convenient way to address the issue of clarity when transforming a variety of place attributes into core place values and eventual place brands.

The in vivo production of soluble inorganic pyrophosphatases (PPases) was investigated in two strains, namely, Vibrio cholerae EM 004 (environmental strain) and Vibrio cholerae O1 757 (ATCC strain). V. cholerae is known to contain both family I and family II PPase coding sequences. The production of family I and family II PPases were determined by measuring the enzyme activity in cell extracts. The effects of pH, temperature, salinity of the growth medium on the production of soluble PPases were studied. In case of family I PPase, V. cholerae EM 004 gave the highest specific activity at pH 9.0, with 2% NaCl + 0.011% NaF and at 37°C. The strain V. cholerae O1 757 gave the highest specific activity at pH 9.0, with media containing 0% NaCl and at 37°C. On the other hand, under all the conditions family II PPase did not give any significant specific activity, suggesting that the family II PPase was not produced in vivo in either strains of V. cholerae under different experimental conditions. The author analyzes the reasons that objectively reduce the importance and quality of the organizational and technological solutions of work production plans and the content of their main documents. Based on a generalization of practical experience, one of the real ways of increasing the level of work production plans is proposed as a result of the development of "The Unified Rules for Work Production on the Site" as part of the construction organization project, in the form of fundamental requirements, followed by the inclusion of this document in the work production plan as an input document. The structure and content of the Unified Rules are described with the disclosure of the main documents - calendar plans of work, construction master plans, technological schemes of works. The first section of the document contains requirements for the content of tasks for the development of the project of work execution, the order of its approval, and requirements for the quality of solutions. The second section presents principal solutions, methods of work execution and their technological schemes. The organizational and technological solutions adopted in the proposed document are specified and detailed by the General Contractor Construction Organization with due regard for the resource capabilities and the actual conditions of construction or reconstruction.

According to the Semmelweis Plan for Saving Health Care, ”the capacity of the national network of intensive care units in Hungary is one but not the only bottleneck of emergency care at present”. Author shows on the basis of data reported to the health insurance that not on a single calendar day more than 75% of beds in intensive care units were occupied. There were about 15 to 20 thousand sick days which could be considered unnecessary because patients occupying these beds were discharged to their homes directly from the intensive care unit. The data indicate that on the whole bed capacity is not low, only in some institutions insufficient. Thus, in order to improve emergency care in Hungary, the rearrangement of existing beds, rather than an increase of bed capacity is needed. Orv. Hetil., 2011, 152, 946–950.

Recent studies on Orthotrichoid mosses in Russia are summarized genus by genus. Orthotrichum furcatum Otnyukova is synonymized with Nyholmiella obtusifolia. Orthotrichum vittii is excluded from the Russian moss flora. Description of O. dagestanicum is amended. Fifty four currently recognized species from 9 genera of the Orthotrichaceae are presently known to occur in Russia; list of species with common synonyms and brief review of distribution in Russia is presented. Numerous problematic specimens with unresolved taxonomy were omitted for future. Revealed taxonomical inconsistencies in the genera Zygodon, Ulota, Lewinskya, Nyholmiella, Orthotrichum are briefly discussed. Main regularities of spatial differentiation of the family Orthotrichaceae in Russia are considered. Recently presented novelties contribute to the certain biogeographic pattern, indicating three different centers of diversity of the family, changing along longitudinal gradient. Unlike European one, continental Asian diversity of Orthotrichaceae is still poorly known, the Siberian specimens which were previously referred to European species in most cases were found to represent other, poorly known or undescribed species. North Pacific Region houses peculiar and poorly understood hot spot of diversity of Orthotrichoid mosses. Thus, these hot spots are obligatory to be sampled in course of revisions of particular groups, since they likely comprise under-recorded cryptic- or semi-cryptic species. Latitudinal gradient also contributes to the spatial differentiation of the revealed taxonomic composition of Orthotrichaceae.

The retrospective study based on aerial photos (1971–2001) of the Canton Tessin made it possible to measure and analyze the evolution of the vegetation of eleven Alpine zones. The analysis shows a strong expansion of the arborescent vegetation and, at the same time, a decrease in other forms of ground cover (bush, shrub, meadow and unproductive spaces). Analysis of the data gives rise to the conjecture that the strong evolutionary dynamism evidenced by the areas under investigation is a result of the vast clearings carried out in past centuries to create pastures. Following the subsequent decrease in human pressure, nature today is attempting to rebalance the level of the biomass. These processes manifest themselves in different ways and with various intensity, depending on the interaction of numerous factors (e.g. climatic conditions, site fertility, initial conditions, evolution of anthropological pressure, etc.).
