Background: The methods of contraception that can be used to prevent pregnancy in the first five days after sexual intercourse are termed as emergency contraception (EC). Unwanted pregnancy among adolescents and youth poses a major challenge to the reproductive health in developing countries because of illegal and unsafe abortions and leading to maternal death. Since medical students are future health care providers and their correct awareness about EC will help in giving health education to the community. The objective of the study was to assess the awareness about emergency contraception among first year medical students in a private medical college of Tamil Nadu.Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among first year medical students of a private medical college. A total of 122 students were interviewed using pretested, semi-structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data.Results: Among the study population, 56.6% and 43.4% were males and females respectively. All students heard about EC and 73% were correctly aware about the correct timing of administration of EC. 72% of them felt that they can get EC directly from any pharmacy store without any prescription, 89% of them feel that EC is not an effective routine method of contraception and only 10% said that it will result in more women suffering from STI/HIV.Conclusions: Our study showed that, students were having good knowledge about emergency contraception. Since they are future health care providers giving adequate training to them in acquiring good knowledge will help in dispensing the reproductive health education to the community especially for the adolescents and youth.

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the attitude of future health care providers regarding the treatment and management of mental health disorders (MHDs). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sampling method. A self-developed and pre-validated tool was used to collect data from students studying in three health care faculties of a university in Malaysia. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 24.0 was used to analyze the data. Results: Out of the total study participants, males were 104 (36.6%) and females were 180 (63.4%) in the study. For the race variable the Malays students were 7 (2.5%), Chinese students 212 (74.6%), Indians students 60 (21.2%), and others 5 (1.7%). Conclusion: Overall positive attitude was observed among the studied cohort of future health care providers.

Objectives: To know the perception of peer-learning among first batch of 1st year medical students in CMH Kharian Medical College. Study Design: Cross-Sectional study. Setting: CMH Kharian Medical College. Period: June 2018 and September 2018. Material & Methods: Questionnaire was distributed among hundred first year medical students on self-reflection and feedback after 15 min power point presentation given by their fellow students based on different pathophysiological scenarios. Results: Out of 100 students, 85 filled out questionnaire form completely. 60% of students were of the opinion that peer-learning facilitated them to perform better in the exam, and can be continued for future batches. 50% of students agreed that this innovative learning modality was conducted in a systematic manner, helped them to improve their understanding of the subject and learning was fostered based on the principles of self-reflection and feedback. Problem solving ability was improved by peer learning format according to 49% of students, while 47% of students reported that this innovative learning strategy provided them with a tool to improve their learning through interaction, while research capabilities of 37% students were improved. Conclusion: Majority of first year medical students lacking senior guidance learned better in a comfortable environment from their peers, and improved understanding of the core subject by realizing the implication of the concept of self-reflection and feedback.

Background: Emergency contraception (EC) which is the only method indicated after the unprotected sexual intercourse prevents unintended pregnancies and its harmful consequences like unsafe abortion or unintended child delivery. Since medical students are the future medical professional and would be the main channel to provide preventive, promotive and curative services to the population at large, their knowledge and attitude towards EC is an important context in the overall health scenario of India. The study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of medical students towards use of EC.Methods: This cross sectional questionnaire based study was conducted among 2nd professional MBBS students in a Government Medical College in North India. The self administered questionnaire intended to seek information on knowledge and attitude of the students. The data so collected was expressed in percentages and Chi square test was used as test of significance.Results: All the respondents had heard of EC with mass media as the main source of information. More than 90% of the respondents knew about the indications for use of EC as well as the timing of the use of EC. Female respondents had better knowledge about composition of EC as well mechanism of action (p<0.05). More than 90% would recommend EC in case of unprotected sexual intercourse and 83.5% had positive attitude towards EC.Conclusions: Although knowledge about EC was good on certain parameters, yet lack of in depth knowledge among future health care providers is a cause of concern. So, attention be given to special issues relating to EC from early years of medical education till internship.

Background: Hepatitis B, a vaccine preventable infection is one of the important causes of morbidity in India. The risk of acquiring the infection is more among the health care providers like nurses than in general population as they come in close contact with patients. The study has been done to know the sociodemographic profile, vaccination status along with the knowledge about the disease and the factors determining the acceptance of vaccination among nursing staff of KPC Medical College in West Bengal.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among the 284 nursing staff of KPC Medical College and Hospital in November to December, 2018 with the help of pre-designed and semi-structured questionnaire. Data on demographic characteristics, knowledge, occupational exposure, vaccination status and factors for acceptance of vaccine etc. were collected and analysed.Results: 86% nursing staff received vaccination out of which 71% were completely vaccinated, 29% were partially and 14% were non vaccinated. The acceptable knowledge was found in 84% of the nurses. The major reason of vaccination was to protect themselves from infection and the major reason for non-acceptance was time limitation, cost issues etc. Accidental prick was found in 5% of the nurses and universal precautionary measure was taken by 98% of the nurses.Conclusions: In spite of availability of safe, effective and cheap vaccine against hepatitis B infection, 29% of nursing staff were partially vaccinated and 14% were non-vaccinated. There should be a mandatory vaccination at the beginning of their training and frequent educational and awareness programme for them on hepatitis B.

Background: There are several risk factors contributing to cardiovascular diseases, such as age, gender and ethnicity. Positive family history being overweight and obese is also additional risk factors. Other, life style factor that contribute to hyper tension are smoking, stress cell phone use and physical inactivity, consumption of alcohol, increase salt intake reduce potassium intake. The objective of the study was to assess the awareness about cardiovascular diseases risk factors amongst first-year medical students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out amongst 136 first-year medical students of MIMSR Medical College, Latur, Maharashtra during the period of December 2017 to May 2018. A self-administered, pre-tested structured questionnaire was used to obtain information about awareness of cardiovascular diseases risk factors including diet, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol habits from the study subjects.Results: The study subjects were 136 first-year medical students belonging to 18–23 years age group. There was good awareness about high fat food, high sugar intake, smoking and alcohol consumption as cardiovascular diseases risk factors.Conclusions: There is good awareness about cardiovascular diseases risk factors among first-year medical students.

Background: Dunning Kruger (DK) effect refers to overestimation of one’s ability which is attributed to their inadequacy of metacognitive skills i.e., the low-performing individuals are often nescient of their incompetence which leads them to reach fallacious conclusions and make regrettable choices. Objectives of the study were to assess the degree of DK effect among the first-year medical students and to compare the associated socio-economic variables.Methods:  A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among the interested first-year medical students of North Bengal medical college and hospital from March 2021 to April 2021 using a questionnaire. Responses were recorded in Microsoft excel 2017, analysed, and presented in form of tables and charts following principles of descriptive statistics.Results: The overall prevalence of DK effect was found to be 78.38% among the first-year medical students. Higher prevalence was observed among females (80.28%) as compared to males (75%). Students having low study hours (79.13%), no academic achievements (77.5%), and greater hours of sleep (79.74%) manifested more predisposition to DK effect.Conclusions: In our research, we have noticed a higher DK effect among the first-year medical students, which might hamper the quality of treatment and patient care in the future. Proper orientation and counselling methods are required to overcome this phenomenon.

Background: The objective of the study was to determine the awareness and attitude towards HPV vaccination among medical and nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was done among nal MBBS part 2 and nal year BSC nursing students with a pretested questionnaire about HPV vaccine. Results: About 79.3% students were aware of the availability of HPV vaccine.69.8% knew the correct age of vaccination.25.8% of the students have been vaccinated with HPV vaccine. About 72.4% students were willing to advice or receive vaccine which was more among medical students compared to nursing students(p value<0.05). High cost and inadequate information were stated as the main obstacle preventing vaccination. Conclusion: Lack of awareness among medical and paramedical students can be detrimental to the health of society. So, there is need to increase awareness and improve vaccination status among future health care providers against Human papilloma virus

Background: Medical profession is one of the most highly rated professions among the students due to the fact that it offers prospects of a financially as well as a socially satisfying career. It was observed that many students in India prefer a career in medicine because of parental pressure. It has been consistently reported that a considerable proportion of medical students regret their career choice. Considering all these aspects the current study aimed at knowing the factors influencing to take up medical profession, interest towards different modes of teaching, reasons for least attention during the class and regret after choosing medicine as career.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 first year medical students with a pre-tested, semi structured questionnaire. Data collected was analysed using SPSS software.Results: The mean age of the subjects was 17.94±0.82 and majority were females (72%). Majority (82.6%) students opted MBBS out of self-interest. To earn respect in the society (83.87%) was the most common motivational factor to opt MBBS. 39.33% of the subjects was having regret feeling for choosing medical profession.Conclusions: Self-interest was the major reason for opting MBBS. Parent’s pressure was also observed as one of the reasons for opting MBBS. Almost one third of the students were having the feeling of regret for opting medical profession. Special attention should be paid towards these students.

Abstract Background Health care providers are often the first point of contact for the victims of violence against women (VAW). Therefore, it is important to understand their perception about VAW. Objective To assess the proportion of female medical students who experienced violence, and elicit their perception regarding the same. Methods It was a cross-sectional study undertaken among 50 medical and 50 nursing students of a medical college in Central Delhi. A self-administered, questionnaire was used for data collection. Results Of the total, 18% had experienced molestation while 77% had experienced eve-teasing during their lifetime. But, only 2% reported the incident to police. Perception regarding the victim’s role and self-determination was favorable amongst the female students. However, only 39% knew some basic self-defense techniques. Conclusion The proportion of students who experienced eve-teasing in their lifetime was high. The study highlighted the need to make the female students more pro-active and competent in terms of tackling violence.
