ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Anemia in pregnancy is an important factor which is associated with a number of maternal and fetal complications. It is a major contributor to poor pregnancy and birth outcomes in developing countries. This study aims at finding the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women living in rural Warangal and to determine the socio-demographic features of pregnant women.METHODOLOGY: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted in Wardhanapet, the rural field practicing area of Kakatiya medical college, Warangal, Telangana. All pregnant women between the ages of 15 and 49 years were included in the study.The sample size was calculated by using the formula *P*Q/ = 382 pregnant women. Where Z is confidence level at 95% (standard value is 1.96); P is proportion (prevalence of anemia during pregnancy 54.4%, NFHS-5); L is precision at 95% CI = 0.05.Simple random sampling was done and the data was collected using a pre-designed, semi-structured questionnaire. Hemoglobin levels were taken from existing lab reports of the subjects. Hemoglobin cut-off for anemia during pregnancy was taken as per WHO criteria. The data collected was entered in MS-EXCEL and exported to SPSS V20 for further analysis. Chi square test was used to find out the significance and p value ≥0.05 was considered significant.RESULTS: Among 382 subjects, the prevalence of anemia was 62%. Of them, 40% (n=130) had mild, 55% (n=155) had moderate anemia and 5% (n=12) had severe anemia. Significant association was found between anemia and parity, birth spacing, intake of IFA tablets, education and type of diet. There was no association between age of the subject, age at first conception and socioeconomic status.CONCLUSION: As prevalence of anemia is 62%, efforts to identify modifiable factors of anemia the importance of prevention of anemia must be reinforced in pregnant women.

Objectives: To analyze the factors associated with anemia in pregnancy in the Cascades region in Burkina Faso. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in antenatal clinics of the Cascades region in Burkina Faso during one month from May to June 2012. We collected data on socio-demographics and health characteristics of pregnant women attending these clinics. Hemoglobin was measured to assess anemia. Factors associated with anemia were identified through a multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 1763 pregnant women, irrespectively of pregnancy stage, were enrolled. The mean (SD) hemoglobin level was 10.6 (1.4) g/dl. The prevalence of anemia in pregnancy was 58.9%, 3.2% of them being severe. Factors associated with anemia were the absence of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria with sulfadoxin-pyrimetamin (OR = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.0-1.7), number of pregnancies >6 (OR = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.1-1.9). Moderate consumption of local alcohol extracted from Palmyra was associated with a lower prevalence of anemia (OR = 0.7, 95% CI: 0.5-0.9). Surprisingly, anemia was not associated with supplementation with folic acid + iron (p = 0.60). Conclusions: Interventions which aim to reduce the prevalence of anemia in pregnancy in Burkina Faso should improve the coverage of the intermittent preventive treatment of malaria and support the limitation of births.

Relations of Anemia in Pregnancy With Inpartu Kala II Lama in BPM Ny. Suhariyati Surabaya. Anemia in pregnancy in Indonesia is still high, with a national rate of 65% which each region has different variations, anemia is one of the causes of prolonged labor. BPM Ny. Suhariyati Surabaya in December 2014 of 18 people inpartu obtained 6 (33.33%) who have anemia, of the 6 3 occurred prolonged second stage and 12 persons (66.7%) were not anemic, of the 12 people 3 people experiencing prolonged second stage. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between maternal anemia during long inpartu the second stage in the BPM Ny. Suhariyati Surabaya. This study uses an observational analytic study design and by the time the study was cross sectional study with a research population is all women berslin in BPM Ny. Suhariyati a total of 90 people for 2 months. Selection of the sample by simple random sampling with a large sample studied was 40. The variables in this study are anemic pregnant women and old stage II. At the time of data collection procedures inpartu using primary data and the processing of data by cross tables and chi square test. Based on the results of the study of 40 people found 14 (35.00%) had anemia which consists of 4 people (28.57%) had stage II normal and 10 (71.42%) experienced a prolonged second stage. The conclusions of this study is almost half inpartu mothers have anemia, mostly mothers inpartu experiencing prolonged second stage and there is a relationship between maternal anemia during inpartu with prolonged second stage. Advice for pregnant women should undergo hemoglobin levels every 3 months and taking 90 tablets Fe to pregnant women during pregnancy.

Background: Hypothyroidism (HT) is associated with maternal and perinatal morbidity. Subclinical HT rather than overt occur in pregnancy, because overt HT causes infertility. Treatment of overt HT was beneficial in reducing the fetal and maternal complications, Usefulness of correcting subclinical hypothyroidism was doubtful, hence Universal screening of pregnant women was not recommended.Methods: Cross sectional study, conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Government Medical College, Thrissur, Kerala, India. 50 consecutive cases of subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnancy were analyzed for Thyroid function, antenatal, natal, postnatal complications. Perinatal complications, including neonatal hypothyroidism also noted. Statistical analysis done using computer software Epi info3.4. Data expressed in its frequency and percentage, continuous data in mean.Results: All women in the study group received levothyroxine during pregnancy from time of diagnosis. At the time of delivery 84% women were euthyroid and 16% hypothyroid. Complications like anemia 36%, abruption 4%, and postpartum hemorrhage 6% showed a statistically significant association, while pre-eclampsia 20%, preterm labor 22% had no statistically significant association. Comparing the women who are euthyroid as a result of levothyroxine supplementation to women inadequately treated, complications like anemia (33% versus 50%, p value 0.042), abruption (0% versus 4%, p value0.023), PPH (2% versus 6%, p value 0.014) were significantly less in well controlled.Conclusions: Significant association was noted between inadequately treated hypothyroidism and maternal complications like anaemia, placental abruption, placenta previa, PPH, preterm delivery, and caesarean section rate for foetal distress. Universal screening of pregnant women for thyroid status is recommended.

INTRODUCTION: In South Asian Region, the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women has been estimated to be 75% which is highest in the world. Hence, this study was drafted to evaluate the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women in western part of NepalMATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a hospital based cross-sectional study. A total of 200 pregnant ladies aged 15-45 years giving consent for the study were included and their detailed medical history, clinical examination and lab investigations focusing on hematological parameters were documented. Data were entered in excel sheet and analysed by SPSS (17.0).RESULTS: The prevalence of anemia in pregnant women was 48% with increased prevalence as the pregnancy proceeds and reaching its highest during third trimester of pregnancy. Young adults with age ranging from 15-30 years had highest prevalence of anemia. Mild anemia (Hb: 9-10.9 g/dl) was the commonest entity.CONCLUSION: With this high prevalence, screening for anemia during pregnancy should be done. Background: Anemia during pregnancy is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in pregnant women in developing countries and has both maternal and fetal consequences. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal checkup in a rural teaching hospital in Telangana.Methods: It is a hospital based cross-sectional observational study conducted in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Maheshwara Medical College and Hospital, Telangana for duration of two years from March 2016 to April 2018. A total of 600 cases were studied and screened. Prevalence of anemia was calculated. Anemia was classified morphologically based on peripheral smear findings and classified as microcytic hypochromic, macrocytic, dimorphic anemia, normocytic normochromic anemia and normocytic hypochromic anemia. Based on hemoglobin values anemia was classified into mild, moderate, and severe anemia.Results: Prevalence of anemia in pregnancy in rural Telangana was about 20%. Age-wise, majority (58.3%) of the patients were between 21 to 25 years. Gravida more than 2 were more 66.6% (400/600) when compared to lower parity. Among 600 cases, 140 pregnant women (23.3%) suffered with mild anemia, 340 cases (56.6%) with moderate anemia and 20% with severe anaemia. Morphologically, microcytic hypochromic type i.e., iron deficiency anaemia was the most common.Conclusions: Anemia in pregnancy in rural Telangana is quite high and was found to be 20% in routine antenatal outpatient cases. Multiple pregnancies and low level of education indirectly contribute to anemia of pregnancy. Education and awareness about anemia in pregnancy can lead to better fetal and maternal outcomes.

Abstract Background Anemia in pregnancy represents a global public health concern due to wide ranging maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes in all peripartum periods. We estimated the prevalence and factors associated with anemia in pregnancy at a national obstetrics and gynecology referral hospital in Uganda and in addition performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the overall burden of anemia in pregnancy in Uganda. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study among 263 pregnant women attending the antenatal care clinic of Kawempe National Referral Hospital, Kampala, Uganda, in September 2020. Anemia in pregnancy was defined as a hemoglobin level of < 11.0 g/dl and microcytosis as a mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of < 76 fL. We also performed a systematic review (PROSPERO Registration ID: CRD42020213001) and meta-analysis of studies indexed on MEDLINE, Embase, African Journal Online, ClinicalTrials.gov, ICTRP, and the Cochrane Library of systematic review between 1 January 2000 and 31 September 2020 reporting on the prevalence of anemia in pregnancy in Uganda. Results The prevalence of anemia was 14.1% (n= 37) (95%CI 10.4–18.8), of whom 21 (56.8%) had microcytic anemia. All cases of anemia occurred in the second or third trimester of pregnancy and none were severe. However, women with anemia had significantly lower MCV (75.1 vs. 80.2 fL, p<0.0001) and anthropometric measurements, such as weight (63.3 vs. 68.9kg; p=0.008), body mass index (25.2 vs. 27.3, p=0.013), hip (98.5 vs. 103.8 cm, p=0.002), and waist (91.1 vs. 95.1 cm, p=0.027) circumferences and mean systolic blood pressure (BP) (118 vs 125 mmHg, p=0.014). Additionally, most had BP within the normal range (59.5% vs. 34.1%, p=0.023). The comparison meta-analysis of pooled data from 17 published studies of anemia in pregnancy in Uganda, which had a total of 14,410 pregnant mothers, revealed a prevalence of 30% (95% CI 23–37). Conclusions Despite our study having a lower prevalence compared to other studies in Uganda, these findings further confirm that anemia in pregnancy is still of public health significance and is likely to have nutritional causes, requiring targeted interventions. A larger study would be necessary to demonstrate potential use of basic clinical parameters such as weight or blood pressure as screening predictors for anemia in pregnancy.

Background: Anemia in pregnancy is a worldwide problem, but it is most prevalent in the developing world. Anemia during pregnancy affects both mother’s and her child’s health. Globally, the prevalence of anemia is 74% among pregnant women, and in India, it ranges from 19% to 61%. Anemia during pregnancy will lead to consequences such as fetal anemia, low birth weight, preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, and perinatal mortality. Anemia during pregnancy and its consequences can be prevented and treated if diagnosed on time. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at maternity wards of P B M hospital, attached to S P Medical College, Bikaner. The study was conducted for a period of 2 months. Women aged 15-49 yrs. Who had undergone delivery and having ANC record were include in the study after taking informed consent for participation in the study. The data were collected using semi?structured questionnaire. Results: Out of 1090 women 91.3% women were anemic. Prevalence of anemia was higher(95.3%) in women with less than 3 ANC visit as compare to women with 3 or more ANC visit. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women was high in our study and also seen is various studies in different parts of the country. ABSTRACT Anemia during pregnancy is a global public health challenge facing the world today, especially in the developing countries. Anemia in pregnancy is an important contributor to maternal mortality/morbidity as well as to the low birth weight which in turn might contribute to increased percentage for infant mortality. Many epidemiological studies in the past have reported the problem in high magnitude. This review was conducted to identify the persistence of the problem in the South Asian countries during the last 5 years irrespective of iron supplementation as a measure to tackle this problem. Materials and methods A review of all published literature related to prevalence of anemia for a period of 5 years (2007- 2011) in South Asian countries was carried out. The online databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, Science Direct, Scopus, and Cochrane were used to identify relevant studies. Data from studies meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria were abstracted into a standardized form. Results Eleven studies with a total of 1,93,131 pregnant women were included in the review. The maximum and minimum reported prevalence rates of anemia during pregnancy were 80 and 18% respectively. The maximum and minimum prevalence of severe anemia affecting pregnant women is 20 and 2.7%. The risk factors that are involved are young age, educational status and socioeconomic status, poor birth spacing and lack of compliance to iron and folic acid supplementation. Conclusion Anemia is the most frequent maternal complication of pregnancy. All the 11 studies reviewed focused on assessing the prevalence of anemia during various stages of pregnancy. It shows anemia is prevalent from mild to severe degree with substantial variations across trimesters. The outcomes of these suggest prevalence of anemia is due to associated factors and lack of deficiency of vitamin B12, low BMI, infection with ascariasis, deficient dietary consumption of foods fortified with iron, low socioeconomic conditions and high parity.  Anemia in pregnancy is potentially harmful to the mother and child. Based Riskesdas 2013 the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in Indonesia amounted to 37.1%, this indicates the incidence of pregnancy anemia in Indonesia is still quite high, this study aims to Know the knowledge before and after getting a health education about the link between diet and the incidence of high risk in pregnancy puskesmass District, Ciputat timur.Metode this research is descriptive analysis with cross sectional study design. Location of the research conducted at the health center subdistrict, Ciputat east, Rengas, Pisangan, Pondok Ranji. Samples in this study were 84 maternal sample is taken by accidental sampling technique. The research instrument used was a questionnaire and book ANC. Data analysis using Chi Square Results of the study of 84 pregnant women, obtained 20.9% experienced anemia There is a significant correlation between regularity of the diet and the incidence of anemia, with p value 0.002. There is a significant relationship between the processing of foodstuffs with anemia, with p value 0,007.
