Background: Vaccination is an integral part of childhood development since it protects children from a variety of diseases. It is, however, the most common cause of pain in children. Breastfeeding is effective tool for reducing pain in infants during vaccinations. The objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of breastfeeding for pain relief in infants during vaccination.Methods: A true experimental pretest and posttest design was conducted at Maternal and Child Health Clinic at Bharatpur, Nepal among 140 infants receiving pentavalent vaccines (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hepatitis B and Hemophilus influenzae B). A structured interview schedule was used to collect socio-demographic information of mothers and infants. Bio physiologic method was used to determine biological and physical status of the infants. Modified behavioral pain scale was used to measure the level of pain in infants in both the control and experimental groups.Results: The study revealed that the total modified behavioral pain scale (mean ±SD after vaccination was 8.74±0.53 in control and 8.23±1.07 in experimental respectively. The study showed that breastfeeding had significantly lowered pain level (p<0.001) and lessened duration of cry (p=0.002) in infants in experimental group than in control group after vaccination. However, related to injectable vaccination, the study showed that breastfeeding did not significantly stabilized heart rate in infants in both the groups (p=0.122).Conclusions: The study concluded that the infants who were breastfed experienced less pain than those who were not breastfed during vaccination.

<p><strong>OBJECTIVE: </strong>The aim of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of the cognitive behavioral therapy on pain reduction and the elevation of self efficacy among children who suffer from cancer.</p><p><strong>METHOD:</strong> The present study adopts a quasi experimental pretest-posttest two group design .The research population consists of all 9-11 year old children with cancer who admitted to Tehran specialized cancer treatment centers in 2015. From those eligible in this study 40 were selected at hand and were randomly divided to two experimental and control groups (20 for experimental group and 20 for control group). Kuris self-efficacy questionnaire and Oucher pain scale were employed for data collection and multivariate and single-variant analyses of covariance have been used for data analysis.</p><p><strong>RESULTS:</strong> The results showed that the cognitive behavioral therapy has resulted in ease of pain and rise of efficacy among the experimental group (P˂ 0.01).</p><p><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> Based on findings it can be deduced that cognitive behavioral therapy has a significant impact on this group of patients and this treatment can be employed as an appropriate solution in order to reduce the symptoms of children with cancer and ultimately to treat cancer.</p>

This paper investigates the efficiency of text messaging as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructional tool to enhance learner autonomy and perception at the Islamic Azad University-South Tehran Branch, Iran. The study considers seventy-four learners to participate in the study after the administration of an Oxford Placement Test to measure their proficiency level. Participants are randomly assigned in experimental and control groups, including 37 participants each. A questionnaire is used as a pretest and posttest to measure learners` autonomy. Participants from the experimental group use text messaging (the treatment) to receive instructions, whereas those from the control group receive traditional classroom instructions in a face-to-face channel. A semi-structured interview is also used to collect date on experimental group participants` perception in using MALL in classrooms. The results reveal remarkable differences between the experimental and control groups’ means on their learner autonomy scores. However, the impact of the independent samples t-test has shown that there is no statistically meaningful gender difference among the learners regarding their autonomy scores. The findings based on the semi-structured interview showed complimentary views on MALL. The current study is beneficial since its outcomes could be relevant for EFL curriculum developers and English language teachers in the use of mobile learning and text messaging in the English classroom.

Abstract Background: Childbirth is an important experience in the woman's life; and its quality has short- and long-term effects on them. The present study aimed to determine the effect of positive mental imagery on the labor pain tolerance in primiparous women referred to Atieh teaching-medical center in Hamadan.Method: The present clinical trial study was conducted on 90 primiparous mothers referred to Atieh Hospital of Hamadan in interventional (n= 45) and control (n= 45) groups. Data collection tools included demographic information forms, Behavioral pain scale, Visual analogue scale (VAS), and the birth registration checklist that were responded by both groups through interviews and observation during labor. The intervention group participated in 4 weekly counseling sessions in groups of 5 to 7 participants, but the control group received only routine care. Finally, the obtained data from above questionnaires was analyzed using SPSS 21 and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), Independent t-test and chi-square test and the significance level of tests was considered to be at the level of 5%.Results: The research results indicated that the mean age of control and intervention groups was 25.98±4.82 and 25.32± 4.85 respectively. The mean scores of Visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Behavioral Pain Scale significantly decreased compared to the control group (P <0.001). The mean scores of behavioral changes in the intervention group were 1.77 ± 0.68, 2.39± 0.54 and 3.09±0.60 in 4-5 cm, 6-7 cm and 8-10 cm dilatations respectively. That was statistically significant decrease compared to the control group (P=0.005). Conclusion: Positive mental imagery counseling reduced the visual analogue intensity and behavioral pain intensity in primiparous women. It seems that continuing education and counseling during pregnancy and empowering mothers to control themselves and learn mental imagery techniques and practice during pregnancy and childbirth can help mothers to more relax and alleviate the labor pain intensity.Trial registration: Trial Registration Clinical Trial Registry: IRCT20120215009014N242.Registered on 2017-09-10. https://en.irct.ir/trial/9621Sampling start date:2018-10-23

Background: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of music listening for procedural pain relief using two different observational pain tools during endotracheal suctioning. Materials and Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial. The sample of the study included 98 patients with mechanical ventilation support who met the selection criteria. The patients were randomly assigned to control and music therapy groups. Patients in the control group were routinely suctioned as usual. Patients in the music group received music therapy 20 min before, during, and 20 min after endotracheal suctioning. The primary outcome was the pain relief during suctioning. Results: Forty patients in each arm completed the study. Pain scores in the Critical Care Pain Observation Tool and Behavioral Pain Scale were lower in the music group than in the control group during endotracheal suctioning (group: F = 14.85, p = 0.000; F = 9.04, p = 0.000, respectively). It was also found to be a significant interaction effect between the groups and time (group × time: F = 17.35, p = 0.000; F = 18.00, p = 0.000, respectively). Conclusion: The Critical Care Pain Observation Tool and Behavioral Pain Scale in the current study generally demonstrated similar pain scores during the painful procedure. Our findings support that music therapy may act as a nonpharmacological therapy to relieve procedural pain in patients on mechanical ventilation.

 Objectives: The present aims to assess the level of urinary incontinence in experimental and control group, to assess the effectiveness of vaginal cone therapy on urinary incontinence in experimental group and control group and to associate the post-test level of urinary incontinence with the selected demographic variables among women in the experimental group. Methods: A quantitative quasi-experimental research design was conducted among 60 women with urinary incontinence. Convenience sampling technique was used. Semi-structured interview method was used to collect the demographical data and level of urinary incontinence among women was assessed by urinary incontinence diagnosis questionnaire. Results: Among 60 samples in experimental group 26 women had a moderate level of urinary incontinence, and 4 women had slight urinary incontinence whereas in control group 24 women had moderate level of urinary incontinence and 6 women had slight urinary incontinence. The study results show significant improvement in level of urinary incontinence among experimental group than the control group after the intervention at the level of p<0.05. This reveals that vaginal cone therapy is highly significant in the experimental group because pelvic muscle strength had improved and allows the patient to increase the physiological consciousness and promotes the muscle tone after the use of a vaginal cone. Conclusion: This study proves that vaginal cone therapy is the effective non-pharmacological method, cost-effective method and had no side effects which can be used to treat female urinary incontinence.

Background and Aims: As there are known risks of retraumatization through bereavement crisis interventions, we tailored a new intervention lowering the degree of direct emotional activation. However, we need some evidence on the effects of depression and psychotraumatic symptoms between 1 and 6 months after a loss. Method: We conducted a randomized controlled trial with two groups: control group (n = 18) and experimental group (n = 11) in two assessments (1 and 6 months after loss); both included a semi-structured interview (Socio-Demographic Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory and the Impact of Events Scale-Revised–IES-R). The experimental group had a cognitive-narrative program with four sessions: recalling; cognitive and emotional subjectivization; metaphorization; and projecting sessions. Results: Participants in the experimental and control groups have lower levels of depression and traumatic stress 6 months after a loss. Statistically significant results in emotional numbing IES-R sub-scale are observed. Conclusions: A brief narrative-based cost-effective intervention has a positive effect on depression, controlling the traumatic stress and time after a loss.

The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of a context-based approach (CBA) ‘Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating, Transferring’ (REACT) strategy used in relation to the topic of solubility equilibrium in the laboratory chemistry course on students’ achievement at associate level in a health-related program. In this regard, two contexts related to the topic of solubility equilibrium were developed and applied. The study had pre-test post-test with a control group research design and the participants consisted of sophomore students studying in the Medical Laboratory Techniques (MLT) and the Pharmacy Services (PS) Programs of the Ahmet Erdogan Vocational School of Health Services at Bulent Ecevit University (N= 96). The students enrolled in the MLT program were randomly assigned as the experimental group (n= 47) and the students in the PS program were randomly assigned as the control group (n= 49). The experimental group was taught solubility equilibrium by a CBA REACT strategy, whereas the control group was taught the relevant topic by conventional teaching. The ‘Equilibrium of Solubility Achievement Test (ESAT)’ and ‘Structured Interview Form’ were used as data collection tools in the research. The results of content analysis of ESAT post-test showed that the frequency of answers in the sound understanding category was higher for the experimental group compared to the control group students. In addition, the results of Mann–WhitneyUand Wilcoxon tests of the ESAT indicated that post-test scores were higher in both groups compared to pre-test scores and the increase was higher in the experimental group compared to the control group. The content analysis results of structured interview form and semi-structured interviews showed that the students expressed positive views concerning the instruction and the qualities of the contexts in general. In this research, it was concluded that the CBA REACT strategy used in relation to the topic of solubility equilibrium in the laboratory chemistry course improved students’ sound understanding and achievement and helped them develop positive views regarding the instruction and the quality of the contexts.
