Background: Desmodium velutinum (Fabaceae) is one of the wild edible plants used traditionally to treat diarrhoea, haematuria, infertility and also externally used to treat scorpion bites. Though various parts of the plant have been used for therapeutic purpose, panchanga of the plant has not been studied for its Pharmacognostical and phytochemical characteristics in detail, following scientific parameters. Hence in the present study Desmodium velutinum whole plant has been studied for its pharmacognostical and phytochemical characters and compared with commonly used species Desmodium gangeticum. Methods: Whole plant of Desmodim velutinum was collected from Paikmal, Odisha and Desmodium gangeticum was collected from Junagarh, Gujarat in the month of November 2019 following good collection practices and shade dried. Pharmacognostical study and analytical study were performed following standard pharmacopoeial procedures. Results: Whole plant (Panchanga) of former is sweetish and latter is bitter. Powder microscopy of Desmodium gangeticum showed presence of rhomboidal crystals and lignified annular and spiral vessels. Desmodium velutinum showed presence of prismatic crystals and lignified pitted vessels. Physico-chemical analysis showed higher loss on drying in Desmodium gangeticum, and higher water soluble extractive values of Desmodium velutinum. Phytochemical estimation showed the presence of Proteins, tannins, and carbohydrates in both samples. HPTLC study showed similar Rf value 0.82 and 0.94 at 254 and 0.03 and 0.41 at 366nm. Conclusion: Basing upon the analytical and microscopic similarities Desmodium velutinum may be considered as substitute of Desmodium gangeticum

In the Southern Pantanal, the hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus), an endangered species, often chooses the manduvi tree (Sterculia apetala) as a nesting site, because of its physical properties. In addition, the chemical composition of the wood may also contribute to a nesting selection by the hyacinth macaws. The objective of this study was to determine the main chemical components of S. apetala bark for two seasons, and evaluate its fungicidal potential. Bark samples from S. apetala trees with and without nests of A. hyacinthinus were collected in January (wet season) and August (dry season) of 2012. The inhibition of mycelium growth (MGI) from tree samples with and without nests were assessed using a phytochemical analysis to evaluate their antifungal activity against Trichoderma sp. Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of phenolic compounds and flavonoids. In both seasons, samples obtained from nested trees had higher content of total phenols than those collected from non-nested trees. The average content of total flavonoids was higher in January for samples with nest and in August for samples without nest. All selected samples showed antifungal activity, and those with nest collected in August (peak of hyacinth macaw breeding) resulted in an MGI of 51.3%. Therefore, this percentage, related to the content of flavonoids and the presence of coumarins, may influence the reproductive success of hyacinth macaws and other species of birds, in this region. This is the first chemical study report with the stem bark of S. apetala.

Medicinal plants are an integral component of alternative medical care. For millennia, Indian people traditionally played an important role in the management of biological resources and were custodians of related knowledge that they acquired through trial and error over centuries. India has a rich wealth ofmedicinal plants and the potential to accept the challenge to meet the global demand for them. In recent time, focus on plant research has increased all over the world and a large body evidence has collected to show immense potential of medicinal plants used in various traditional system. Plumbago zeylanica L.(Plumbaginaceae) is a tropical plant and the source for the well known ayurvedic drug ‘chitrakah’. Different parts of this plant are widely used for variety of medicinal treatments. Especially used for appetite, indigestion, piles, worms, liver diseases and cancer treatments. The present study was therefore carried outto provide pharmacognostic details of root of Plumbago zeylanica. The physico-chemical analysis of ash content indicated the presence of inorganic matter and siliceous matter in the drug. The phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, tannins and terpenoids. Plumbagin is anaturally occurring yellow pigment, produced by member of plumbaginaceae that can be obtained from roots

The research is devoted to the in vitro study of the behavior of the model system «irrigation balanced salt solution BSS − H2O» in order to further develop treatment, rehabilitation and prevention measures for patients with ophthalmic diseases. The aim of the investigation is the experimental determination and analysis of physico-chemical properties of irrigated balanced salt solution, the study of its behavior in the aquatic environment to model changes in the characteristics of intraocular fluid and further development of rehabilitation and preventive measures for ophthalmic patients. Materials and Methods. The study used methods of physico-chemical analysis, in particular, densimetry and viscosimetry of model systems containing BSS for intraocular use and double-distilled water in different volume ratios. The density of the system was determined pycnometrically (20.00 0С ± 0.05 0С; 101.3 kPa); the correction for weight loss of bodies in the air has been taken into account. Viscosity was measured under the same conditions with an Ostwald viscometer. Statistical analysis and evaluation of the reliability of the results were performed using such software products as MS Excel 2007, Google Spreadsheets, SPSS Statistics. Results. Approximate mathematical models of the dependences of density and kinematic and dynamic viscosity on the composition of the multicomponent system «BSS – H2O» were obtained with quite high coefficients of determination. Statistical significance and adequacy of model selection were tested by Student's criterion at a significance level of 5 %. To develop therapeutic, prophylactic and rehabilitation measures, mathematical models of kinematic and dynamic viscosity dependences on the density of the «BSS – H2O» system, measured under the same conditions, were built. The models also have high coefficients of determination. Conclusion. The in vitro physico-chemical analysis of the system «BSS – H2O», as well as the obtained approximate mathematical models can be used to predict possible changes in the characteristics of irrigated balanced salt solution during its long stay in the patient's eye.

The objective of this study was to find out the suitability of different fruit juices for probiotication by using Lactobacillus casei. Phyto-chemical analysis of different fruit juices (mango, sapota, grape and cantaloupe) were carried out using the standard methods. Carbohydrates, flavoniods, tannins, glycosides were present and alkaloids and saponins were absent in all the above fruit juices. Further analysis by TLC and DPPH methods indicated good antioxidant activity in all the fruit juices except for cantaloupe juice. Probiotication of fruit juices with L. casei, decreased pH and increased the titratable acidity within 72 h. Physico-chemical properties were also determined at different time intervals (24, 48 and 72 h) of probiotication. Based on the above results, it was inferred that the beverage prepared from the probiotication of fruit juices with L. casei could be useful in providing health benefits to the consumers.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/ijasbt.v1i3.8301 Int J Appl Sci Biotechnol, Vol. 1(3) 2013 : 127-131

Abstract Five commercial mustards, made by different manufacturers, were studied to examine their physico-chemical properties and to establish relationships between those properties. Physico-chemical analysis revealed distinct differences between the mustards in the dry matter and extract contents and smaller differences in the protein, fat and ash levels. Two of the investigated mustards did not satisfy the requirements of the relevant Romanian standard regarding dry matter content. Statistical analysis of the results showed significant linear correlations between the dry matter, fat, protein and ash contents of mustards and some parameters of rheological model.

Acharya Sushruta is the pioneer of Kshara Kalpana, as he introduced Kshara Kalpana (Ayurvedic formulation) in one of the specific chapters. These alkaline preparations have many therapeutic usages and even proved to be effective in treating many disorders through external use as well as internal use. External applications of these preparations have replaced many surgical procedures. Kshara is alkaline substance obtained from the ash of herbal drugs. Kshara is a substance that has Ksharan (corrosive) nature means which removes Dusta Tvagmansadi (viti- ated debris of skin, flesh etc.) or vitiated Dosha, Dhatu, Mala. Now a days Kshara and Ksharasutra is routinely prepared by Apamarga Kshara. Acharya Susruta has mentioned 23 plants from which we can make the Kshara. So, we need more plants to explore for kshara preparation. We selected Snuhi for Kshara preparation and comparative physico-chemical study is done with standard Apamarga Kshara. Keywords: Ayurveda, Kshara, Snuhi Kshara, Physico- Chemical analysis.
