Asset management, as a global process through which value is added to a company, is a managerial model that involves major changes in strategies, technologies, and resources; risk management; and a change in the attitude of the people involved. The growing commitment of companies to sustainability results in them applying this approach to all their activities. For this reason, it is relevant to develop sustainability risk assessment procedures in industrial assets. This paper presents a methodological framework for the inclusion of sustainability aspects in the risk management of industrial assets. This approach presents a procedure to provide general criteria, methodology, and essential mandatory requirements to be adopted for the identification, analysis, and evaluation of sustainability aspects, impacts, and risks related to assets owned and managed by an industrial company. The proposed procedure is based on ISO 55,000 and ISO 31,000 standards and was developed following three steps: a preliminary study, identification of sustainability aspects and sustainability risks/opportunities, and impact assessment and residual risks management. Our results could serve as a model that facilitates the improvement of sustainability analysis risks in industrial assets and could be used as a basis for future developments in the application of the standards to optimize management of these assets.

Purpose The purpose of this paper looks into how the Islamic legal maxims (ILM) could provide a basis for Sharīʿah audit practices in assisting the institution’s managerial practice to achieve Maqasid al Shari’ah (MS). Design/methodology/approach The findings of the study recorded in this paper are based on a single case study selected from a preliminary study. The qualitative approach was used, where two phases of a semi-structured interview were conducted on the targeted participants in their natural settings. Findings It was found that with the implementation of Sharīʿah audit practices, ILM supports the achievement of MS by Islamic banks. With this, the income generated by these banking institutions is halal, and all business transactions and operations will not violate the Sharīʿah principles. Furthermore, the ILM includes principles such as “certainty is not overruled by doubt,” “matters determined according to intentions,” “the norm in transactions is that of permissibility,” “harm must be eliminated” and “judgment is to be based on knowledge and understanding.” Social implications The findings of this study have provided valuable information that would lead Muslim auditors to exhibit a strong character while abiding by Islamic principles. Originality/value MS is strongly recommended in Islamic banking institutions because of the significant relationship between MS and the objectives of business transactions where wealth must be protected in the prevention of incoming hardships occurring in society. Moreover, this paper focuses on the application of ILM in the Sharīʿah audit practices as a part of the Sharīʿah governance in Islamic banks.

Family businesses are of great importance because they have generated new jobs over the years, allowing them to be the object of study in various investigations; despite this, no emphasis has been placed on case studies that highlight both leadership and the decisive process in this type of organizations, known as succession. As a result, concern was generated to study a company that has gone through this process, where the main purpose is to show the ability to solve problems, challenges and how to cope with succession, in addition to knowing whether leadership is a key factor in it, deepening it to a greater extent in a case study, with semi-structured interview guides. After analyzing and interpreting what the informants mention, it is obtained as a result that leadership was a fundamental piece in this process, with an autocratic leadership that was exercised by the founder of the company. Currently, the new owner has used different types of leaderships depending on the situation, called situational. It is recommended to continue with that leadership style that characterizes him and to continue to be successful as a recognized family business.

This research was conducted to explore how the ‘Read and Record Project’ could help motivate struggling Malaysian primary ESL readers to read.  This paper will report on motivating effects of the ‘Read and Record Project’ towards struggling readers. A case study was employed as the research design and four instruments were used to collect the data which were semi-structured interview, observation notes, and reflective journal. The data collected were analysed thematically. The participants were chosen through purposive sampling. Before this study was carried out, a preliminary study was done in a primary school located in Betong, Sarawak. From the preliminary study, four struggling readers from Year 3 were chosen to participate in the ‘Read and Record Project’. Findings revealed five elements of the project that could help motivate struggling readers to read through the project. The elements include independent learning, parents’ involvement, video production, sense of accomplishment, and fun learning. This paper describes barriers to effective collaboration between geographically distributed experts jointly participating in design of medical products. The barriers were observed during a study conducted at a company which produces implantable medical devices such as pacemakers and defibulators, but the issues are typical of most international product producing companies. The company commissioned the study because they experienced serious manufacturing difficulties after moving their manufacturing facility to a new location where labor was less expensive, several thousand miles distant from design facility. The company suspected that the difficulties stemmed from insufficient communication and collaboration between the now distant design engineers and manufacturing engineers, but they lacked a sufficiently detailed understanding of the causes to formulate effective solutions. Electronic tools had not resolved the problems. The study found that the added distance greatly exacerbated many existing design/manufacturing collaboration challenges that occur in most organizations even when the two are located at the same site. Additionally, distance resulted in a decay of familiarity between sites with the people, processes and expertise at the other site. More explicit structure and incentives were needed to help distant team members overcome the added collaboration difficulties created by distance. The study concluded that one while one needs appropriate electronic tools to make it possible for distant design team members to communicate easily, additionally, an organization must provide appropriate processes, incentives and resources to motivate people to collaborate over distance.

If consulting construction companies made more effective use of project-generated knowledge, the financial health of the company would increase. This chapter discusses how wasted, lost, and ineffective use of knowledge leads to inefficiencies and reworking of past problems. The chapter focuses on the development of project-generated knowledge management systems and the benefits that construction companies can reap from such developments. Through a detailed case study, the chapter shows where the main problem areas occur in managing knowledge and proposes possible solutions to these problems. The chapter concludes that it is the people that use and produce the knowledge that are in the best position to help develop such a project-generated knowledge management system, with senior managers and company knowledge managers providing structure, facilitation, and support. With such collaboration and involvement of all staff in a company, failures of such systems will be reduced and the company as a whole will benefit.

Costs are indicators of the financial and economic health of a company, as they are part of the production chain and are therefore necessary for the manufacture of a product, but when extra costs are included in production profitability is compromised. This paper aims to present the reduction of scrap costs of imported materials, identifying the problems related to the product and its impact on the company. As specific objectives, it aims to understand the problems that occur for the amount of parts disposal; develop a containment and correction action plan; implementation of improvements to the inspection and receiving line. As a methodology, we used a case study in a microwave oven assembly plant, where technical visits were conducted by two leaders responsible for the assembly, inspection and receiving sector, where the collection instruments were performed. For the elaboration of the solutions we used the 5W2H tool and control chart to find the faults in the parts.

The present study aimed to analyze how sustainable actions are related to the competitive port, with the best market positioning and respective regional socio-environmental development, still incipient research in the national scope. To achieve this objective, a methodological framework was adopted with the application of semi-structured interviews with the directors of the Ponta do Félix Port Terminal, whose analytical categories focus on John Elkington's three pillars of sustainability, as well as Strategies Competitive Generics, by Michael Porter. From the content analysis, following the guidelines of Bardin, two predominant strategies were verified: (i) Differentiation, considering that the service rendering is considered unique and differentiated in operations and quality; And (ii) Approach, which characterizes a service aimed at customers who work with special products, demanding strict environmental demands. This study confirms, starting from the "Porter Hypothesis", the relationship between sustainability and competitiveness in a company, stimulating innovation and cost reduction, thus obtaining a competitive advantage due to the adjustments to environmental regulations. The study brings practical contributions to managers of the port segment about the organizational competitiveness linked to environmental quality standards, such propositions can guide the concentration of new positions under the sustainable port perspective as a business strategy. In addition, from this study also emerge contributions to the scientific community regarding the filling of the literature gap in the area in question.
