Relevance. Pathology of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, diseases of the digestive system, blood system, etc, as well as application of medications used for their treatment can result in the condition which is characterised by reduction of bone density – secondary osteoporosis. The aim of the research was to determine absorption of calcium in the small intestine of rats under impact of various xenobiotics. Materials and methods. The research was performed on white rats of herd breeding which, depending on the group obtained during 60 days: 1) cefoperazone (p/o, 180 mg/kg per day) and amoxiclav (p/o, 135  mg/kg per day); 2) mercazolil (p/o, 25 – 40 mg/kg per day); 3) L-thyroxine (p/o, 10 mg/kg per day); 4) hydrazine sulphate (50 mg/kg 2 times per week for 90 days). Calcium absorption was studied in an isolated loop of the small intestine of the animals. The condition of the small intestine mucous membrane was estimated in accordance with inflammation markers (elastate and acid phosphatase activity, index of the degree of opportunistic microbiota (urease activity), index of non-specific antimicrobial protection of mucous membranes (lysozyme activity). Long-term application of antibiotics contributed to reduction of calcium absorption in the small intestine of rats by 25.0 %, of mercazolil – by 29.7 %, of thyroxine – by 11.4 %, of hydrazine sulphate – by 34.5 %. The increase of elastase and acid phosphatase activity in the mucous membrane of the small intestine under the action of xenobiotics, as well as increase of urease activity and reduction of lysozyme activity testify to the change in the small intestine condition. Сonclusions. So, the significant reduction of calcium absorption after long-term application of xenobiotics can be first of all connected with inhibition of antimicrobial protection of the small intestine mucous membrane under the action of antibiotics, mercazolil, thyroxine and hydrazine sulphate. More active multiplication of opportunistic bacteria, presence of dysbiosis, and, after application of antibiotics and hydrazine sulphate, development of inflammation can be the consequence of lysozyme activity reduction.

This study investigates the effects of kanwa on rat gastrointestinal phosphatases. The rats were administered 7% w/v concentration of  trona (Kanwa) orally for a period of two weeks in order to investigate how this compound is being used as food additive in some homes in Nigeria. The Kanwa used in this study was the handpicked variety obtained from sellers from Anyigba market in eastern part of Kogi State, Nigeria. Kanwa, a hydrated sodium carbonate (Na2CO3NaHCO3.2H2O) was obtained as a dried lake salt. Acid phosphatase has the ability to dephosphorylate molecules containing phosphate group. The decreased and elevated level in serum or plasma acid and alkaline phosphatases serves as diagnostic indices for various diseases. Results showed that there was increase and decrease of acid phosphatase (ACP) activities in both the stomach and small intestine. The activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) fluctuated in the small intestine. However, in the stomach, an increase activity of ALP was noticed throughout the period of ‘Kanwa’ administration. We concluded that although the level of ‘Kanwa’ consumed in most homes may not be toxic if not taken continuously or repeatedly. Thus, continuous consumption should be discouraged as accumulation of high level of ‘Kanwa’ may cause damages or injuries to the various organs/tissues and may disrupt normal body function.

Most of melanomas of the gallbladder are metastatic lesions of cutaneous melanoma. Primary melanomas of the gallbladder are described as single, polypoid, intraluminal masses emanating from the mucous membrane. The most important characteristic is the absence of melanoma damage to the skin. If it is not possible to localize primary melanoma a multidisciplinary approach to diagnostic search comes to the fore. Predicting for primary melanoma of the gallbladder is a difficult task due to the small number of cases and the absence of long-term follow-up for this category of patients.

Abstract Background Clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the gastrointestinal tract (CCSLTGT) is extremely rare. It is a mesenchymal neoplasm that usually forms in the small intestine of adolescents and young adults, is prone to local recurrence and metastasis, and has a high mortality rate. We report a patient with CCSLTGT with lymph node- and liver metastases, who continues to survive 6 years after initial surgical resection. Case presentation A 38-year-old woman presented with lightheadedness. Laboratory analysis revealed anemia (hemoglobin, 6.7 g/dL), and enhanced computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a mass in the small intestine, about 6 cm in diameter, with swelling of 2 regional lymph nodes. Double-balloon small intestine endoscopic examination revealed a tumor accompanied by an ulcer; the biopsy findings suggested a primary cancer of the small intestine. She was admitted, and we then performed a laparotomy for partial resection of the small intestine with lymph node dissection. Pathologic examination revealed CCSLTGT with regional lymph node metastases. About 3 years later, follow-up CT revealed a single liver metastasis. Consequently, she underwent a laparoscopic partial liver resection. Histopathologic examination confirmed that the liver metastasis was consistent with CCSLTGT. It has now been 3 years without a recurrence. Conclusion Repeated radical surgical resection with close follow-up may be the only way to achieve long-term survival in patients with CCLSTGT.

Eggshell calcium citrate (ESCC) prepared by pulsed electric field (PEF) may be a new calcium resource to help treat and prevent calcium deficiency. An absorption assessment of ESCC prepared by PEF was performed in male mice with apparent calcium absorption. Compared with control group, ESCC prepared by PEF at doses of 133.0 mg/(kg•d) significantly improved the alkalinity phosphatase (ALP) activity (P < 0.05) and decreased the levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) (P < 0.05). The ratio of calcium and phosphorus were in the normal range. Therefore, ESCC prepared by PEF could promote the absorption of calcium in mice.

Session 4 / XII 1929 Dr. I. F. Kharitonov (speaker Dr. A. N. Syzganov). The formation of an artificial vagina by Baldwin's method with a completely satisfactory result for the near future was produced by the operator in one case of congenital absence of this organ; the method is not safe, fraught with complications; in the reported case, the mucous membrane of the newly formed vagina continues to secrete juice from the small intestine, which strongly irritates the surrounding tissues.

Abstract Introductions: Hepatic cirrhosis is a final common pathway of all chronic liver diseases, characterized by deposit of fibrillar collagen and liver failure. Materials and Methods: In this experiment, hepatic cirrhosis was induced in 15 female Wistar rats by a 14-week period, with thioacetamide solution in a 200 mg/kg dosage, via intraperitoneal. Animals were submitted to liver biopsy, and euthanized after a 80-day post-induction period. Serum biochemical analysis was performed, in addition to histopathology by H.E., Picrosirius, Alcian Blue and P.A.S. stainings, following analysis of histological activity index and staging of fibrosis. Morphometric analysis of collagen on Picrosirius slides was also performed. Results: Mortality during experimental period was low (13.33%), and after 80-day period, liver function improved, cellular changes did not altered, and deposition of acidic mucopolysaccharides and glycogen were increased. Liver histological activity did not change significantly (7.25 ± 1.30 to 6.41 ± 1.32), but staging of fibrosis was altered (3.91 ± 0.76 to 4.70 ± 1.11). Interlobular collagen showed a significant decrease (5.14 ± 2.00 to 4.00 ± 1.20), while intralobular collagen was increased (0.23 ± 0.06 to 0.36 ± 0.08). Conclusions: These findings characterize thioacetamide as a safe experimental model for induction cirrhosis, which may be used for future therapy studies.

Short bowel syndrome refers to the malabsorptive state caused by loss of significant portions of the small intestine, whose clinical framework is characterized by malnutrition, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, and low-weight-related symptoms/signs. These clinical conditions seem to be related to the length of resection. Twenty-one years ago we reported the clinical case of an infant, who underwent a massive resection of the loops of the small intestine, of the cecum and of part of the ascending colon, due to intestinal malrotation with volvulus. The residual small intestine measured just 11 cm and consisted of the duodenum and a small part of jejunum, in the absence of the ileocecal valve, configuring the case of a <em>ultra-short bowel syndrome</em>. In this report, we update the case, reporting the patient succeeded to obtain a good weight gain and to conduct a quite normal lifestyle, despite the long-term consequences of such resection.
