A ruminant’s digestion depends on microbial degradation of feed rather than endogenous enzyme degradation as in most monogastric animals. The study was conducted to assess the effects of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) strains administered as direct-fed microbials on weight gain and ruminal pH of Damara and Meatmaster sheep breeds. Sixty-four Damara and Meatmaster sheep breeds [Damara males (36.6 ± 8.3 kg); Damara females (28.9 ± 6.9 kg); Meatmaster males (24.6 ± 3.4 kg); Meat master females (21.5 ± 3.1 kg)] were subjected to a 30-day trial and divided into five treatment groups as follows: pellets with no antibiotic and no probiotics administered (T1); pellets with no antibiotics, only Lactobacillus rhamnosus SCH administered (T2); pellets with no antibiotics, only Lactobacillus rhamnosus AF3G administered (T3); pellets with no antibiotics, with the combination of Lactobacillus rhamnosus SCH and Lactobacillus rhamnosus AF3G, administered (T4); pellets fortified with antibiotic and no probiotic administered (T5). The animals were fed on commercial pellets fortified with or without antibiotics. Animals were each weighed, and rumen fluids were collected using a stomach tube, and pH was read immediately, before and at the end of the trials. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance using SPSS version 4.0. The results showed that the effect of treatment, sex and some of their interactive effects were significant (p <0.001) on the body weight of sheep irrespective of breed. The effect of treatments revealed that the animals in the combination of probiotics gained more weight than those in other groups. Damara breed had a heavier body weight than Meatmaster while males were 6 kg heavier relative to females (p <0.001). Only breed was significant (p <0.05) on weight gained. Treatment (p <0.05), breed (p <0.001) and their interactive effect (p <0.05) were significant on ruminal pH. The highest pH value was 7.27 for the T5 group and 7.37 for the Damara breed. Results suggest that LAB may have beneficial effects on the growth performances of sheep and therefore may be suitable as future growth promoters in sheep production, as they don't have any harmful residues compared to antibiotics.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 12.45pt 6pt 17.85pt; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 10pt;" lang="en-us" xml:lang="en-us">The aim of this study were  to identify the in-vitro tolerance of pro-biotic bacteria to acid and bile salt condition; and  to prove a hypothesis that the supplementation of oxygenated water has a positive effect on the body weight of rat and on viability of pro-biotic bacteria.  The first study was carried out at PAU Laboratory of Bogor Agricultural University, while the second study was conducted at Department of Community Nutrition of Bogor Agricultural University and Microbiology Laboratory of Indonesia Institute of Technology. Forty five rats aged 6 weeks were divided into three groups, i.e., control group without probiotic (a0), Lactobacillus casei Shirota (a1), and Lactobacillus IS-7257 (a2).  Each group (consisting of 5 rats each) has three different treatments, namely, control without oxygenated water (b0), 50 ppm oxygenated water (b2), and 80 ppm oxygenated water (b2). Oxygenated water was administered to the rats twice a day in the morning (3.25 ml) and afternoon (3.00 ml). Observation was carried out on the body  weight of the rats, fecal lactic acid bacteria, coliform, and anaerob bacteria by plate counting, for 4 periods, i.e, prior to the treatment (C0), after three-day treatment (C1), after seven-day treatment (C2), and on the 10<sup>th</sup> day treatment or three days after washed out period. The results indicated that probiotic bacteria are resistant to acid and bile acid condition. Oxygen concentration in water has a significant positive influence on the body weight of rats towards viability of probiotic bacteria (p-level &lt; 0.05).  The supplementation of  oxygenated water 50 ppm significantly increase the population of viable fecal lactic acid bacteria in L. casei Shirota and Lactobacillus IS-7257 groups after 3 and 7 days of treatment.  Lactobacillus IS-7257 gave better response than L. casei Shirota. The supplementation of oxygenated water 80 ppm significantly reduces the fecal coliform in-vivo in both L. casei Shirota and Lactobacillus IS-7257 groups (p-level &lt; 0.05).</span></p>

ABSTRACT. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengkaji perkembangan bakteri usus halus dan performan ayam kampung silangan kampung-leghorn (KL) akibat ditambahkan ekstrak umbi dahlia dalam ransum. Ternak percobaan yang digunakan adalah persilangan ayam kampung silangan KL sebanyak 200 ekor umur 22 hari dengan rata-rata bobot badan 180,46 ± 1,21 g. Bahan perlakuan meliputi umbi dahlia, ethanol 70%, kertas saring halus serta bahan pakan penyusun ransum (jagung giling, bekatul, bungkil kedelai, tepung ikan, CaCO3 dan mineral dan vitamin mix). Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan 4 perlakuan dan 5 ulangan (masing-masing unit percobaan diisi 10 ekor). Perlakuan yang diterapkan meliputi: P0=Ransum kontrol/RK, P1=RK+0,39% ekstrak umbi dahlia, P2=RK+0,78 ekstrak umbi dahlia, dan P3= RK+1,17 ekstrak umbi dahlia. Parameter yang diukur meliputi populasi bakteri asam laktat, Escherichia coli, pH digesta tiap masing-masing segmen usus halus dan pertambahan bobot badan harian (PBBH). Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan uji sidik ragam dan jika berpengaruh nyata dilakukan uji beda nyata Duncan pada taraf 5%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan ekstrak umbi dahlia berpengaruh nyata terhadap populasi bakteri asam laktat, Escherichia coli, pH digesta tiap masing-masing segmen usus halus dan PBBH. Kesimpulan adalah penambahan ekstrak umbi dahlia sampai taraf 1,17% sebagai sumber inulin di dalam ransum dapat meningkatkan populasi bakteri asam laktat, menurunkan pH dan Escherichia coli pada masing-masing segmen usus halus serta memperlambat laju digesta dan meningkatkan PBBH.  (Population of small intestine bacteria and performance of native chicken-leghorn crossbreed duo to feeding of dahlia tuber extract) ABSTRAK. This study aims to examine the development of small intestine bacteria and the performances of native chicken-leghorn crossbreed due to the addition of dahlia tuber extract in the diet. Experimental animals were 200 unsex native chicken-leghorn crossbreed, 22 days old with an average body weight of 180.46 ± 1.21 g. Treatment materials include dahlia tuber, ethanol 70%, fine filter paper and feed stuff (yellow corn, rice bran, soy bean meal, fish meal, CaCO3, and vitamin-mineral mix). The present experiment was assigned in a completely randomized with 4 treatments and 5 replications (10 birds each). The treatments were: P0=Control Diet/CD, P1=CD+0,39% dahlia tuber extract, P2=CD+0,78% dahlia tuber extract and P3=CD+1,17% dahlia tuber extract. Parameters measured were the number of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB), Escherichia coli, intestinal potential hydrogen (pH) (duodenal, jejunal and ileal), rate of passage and daily body weight gain (DBWG). Data were subjected to ANOVA and followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test on 5% level. The results indicated that feeding native chicken-leghorn crossbreed with the diet containing dahlia tuber extract (DTE) significantly (P0.05) increased LAB population and DBWG, decreased E. coli population and intestinal pH, and slow the rate of passage down. In conclusion, feeding of dahlia tubers as a source of inulin in the form of dahlia tuber extract to a level of 1.17% increased the population of lactic acid bacteria, reduced pH and Escherichia coli in each segment of the small intestine and retard the rate of digestion and increased body weight gain.

This study aims to prove the sauerkraut liquids in the drinking water of broiler chickens to weight gain, final weight, feed consumption, feed efficiency and the amount of lactic acid bacteria intestine of broilers. A total of 24 chickens broiler DOC with an average weight of 25-35 gr/tail. Broiler chickens were randomly divided into 4 groups.. Each group was given liquids sauerkraut 0 ml/L, 0.5 ml/L, 1.0 ml/L, and 1.5 ml/L in drinking water for 35 days. The results showed the treatment liquids concentration sauerkraut 1,5 ml/L in drinking water have a significant effect (P <0,05) on body weight gain, final weight, feed intake, feed efficiency and the amount of lactic acid bacteria intestines of broiler chickens. Average of body weight gain of broilers given liquids sauerkraut 1.5 ml/L in drinking water significantly (P <0.05) higher than the weight gain of broilers concentration 0 ml/L. Average of final weight of broilers given liquids sauerkraut 1,5 ml/L in drinking water significantly (P <0.05) higher than the final weight of broilers concentration 0 ml/L. Average of consumption of broiler chicken feed given liquids sauerkraut 1,5 ml/L significantly (P <0.05) lower than the consumption of broiler chicken feed concentration of 0 ml/L. Average of FCR of broilers given liquids sauerkraut 1,5 ml/L significantly (P <0.05) lower than the FCR of broilers concentration of 0 ml/L. The average amount of lactic acid bacteria intestines of broilers given liquids sauerkraut 1.5 ml/L significantly (P <0.05) higher than the amount of lactic acid bacteria intestines of broilers concentration of 0 ml/L. On the research that use of liquids sauerkraut in drinking water 1,5 ml/L can improve feed efficiency and amount of lactic acid bacteria broiler chicken intestines of 23.5%, and 19.4%.   Keywords: Broiler chickens, sauerkraut, feed efficiency, the amount of lactic acid bacteria

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of kefir as a probiotic on the performance and health status of calves. Thirty Holstein female calves with 3-day-old were randomly allocated to three treatment groups: Control (without any probiotic), probiotic (a commercial probiotic mixture-3 g/d/calf bacteria-based and 2 g/d/calf yeast-based) and kefir (20 ml/d/calf). The calves were weaned at 56 days of age. The experiment was performed in 70 days. Treatment had no effect (P>0.05) on weaning and final body weight and starter intake. Although differences in weight gain were not significant (P>0.05), there were trend to increase by probiotic treatments during 0-14 days. Probiotic treatments tended to have a positive effect on the population of the fecal lactic acid bacteria at 14 days. The results of the study indicated that kefir as a natural probiotic in calf nutrition may be beneficial during the first weeks of life.

The aim of the study was to determine the development of ramie plants (Boehmeria nivea L. Gaud) and the effect of using ramie leaves on feed on the body weight gain of Wonosobo Sheep (Dombos). Research on the development of ramie plants using survey methods in the area of ramie plant development in Wonosobo Regency. While the research on the use of ramie leaves for fattening was carried out in Butuh Village, Kalikajar District, Wonosobo Regency in 2018. 21 male Dombos were divided into 3 feed treatments with forage proportions of 70%, 50% and 30 ramie leaves respectively. %. The results showed that currently ramie plants were being developed in Wonosobo Regency by CV. Ramindo Berkah Persada Sejahtera in Gandok Village, Kalikajar District, Wonosobo Regency, Central Java. Until now the area of the crop has reached 13 ha. Of this area will produce ramie leaves 195,000 kg / year. If one sheep needs 4 kg of ramie / tail / day leaves, then the potential capacity of sheep is 135 heads / year, if the given one is 50% then the Jurnal Litbang Provinsi Jawa Tengah, Volume 16 202 Nomor 2 – Desember 2018potential capacity is 270 heads / year and if it is reduced again to 25% of ramie leaves then the potential capacity 440 heads / year. The use of ramie leaves as a feed for Wonosobo Sheep fattening can be given as much as 30% in fresh form.

The study was planned to evaluate the effect of exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (EFE) supplementation for 56 days @ 240 mg/kg total mixed ration (TMR) on digestibility of dry matter and nutrients in dairy cows. Six dry non-pregnant cows were assigned in each treatment with and without EFE. The digestibility trial of seven days was conducted after 49 days of feeding. Dry matter and nutrients intake of cows was not influenced by EFE. The supplementation of EFE had improved digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber, cellulose (p less than 0.01), as well as digestibility of nitrogen-free extract and acid detergent fiber, was also higher (pless than 0.05). The body weight gain of cows was higher on the supplementation of EFE in TMR. The study concluded that feeding exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (240 mg/kg) supplemented TMR improved digestibility of dry matter and nutrients, which was reflected as higher body weight gain in dry non-pregnant Gir and crossbred dairy cows.

Abstract BACKGROUND: A total of one hundred and forty, 28 d-old weaner pigs [Duroc x (Yorkshire x Landrace)] with initial body weight (BW) of 6.56±1.25kg were used in a six-week treatment (7 replicate pens per treatment; barrows, and 2 gilts/pen) to evaluate the effect of low nutrient density diet supplement with probiotic mixture supplementation on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal microbial, and gas emission of weaner pigs. RESULTS: Pigs fed low-density diet with probiotic mixture supplementation had linearly increased (P = 0.028, 0.014) the body weight (BW) at weeks 3, and 6. Moreover, average daily gain (ADG) was linearly improved (P=0.018, 0.014, 0.014) at week 3, 6, and overall experiment. However, there were no interactive effects found on the nutrient digestibility of dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) and energy (E) throughout the experiment. Dietary inclusion of low-density diet with probiotic mixture supplementation has improved the fecal lactobacillus counts linearly, but E. coli was unaffected during the trail. On day 42, Ammonium gas emission was significantly decrease in pigs fed a low-density diet with probiotic mixture supplementation. However, H2S, acetic acid, and CO2 were not significantly affected by the probiotic mixture supplementation diet. CONCLUSION: Low-density diet with probiotic mixture supplementation had positively affected the growth performance, fecal microbial, and fecal gas emission on weaner pigs.
