Background and PurposePoor dietary practices are linked to many chronic diseases. The purpose of this validation study was to develop a psychometrically sound instrument that can be administered by health practitioners to measure dietary barriers.MethodsThe Dietary Health Status (DHS) instrument, designed to measure dietary barriers is comprised of items in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-What We Eat in America datasets. Content validity was established for DHS using an expert review process. Principal component analysis (PCA) was then used to assess validity and reliability as determined by Cronbach's alpha values.ResultsThe PCA supported a 10-component solution, explaining 61% of the total variance. Cronbach's alpha was .67 for the entire instrument, ranging from .55 to .87 for the 10 subscales.ConclusionResults suggest the instrument had sufficient construct and internal validity. This exploratory study is an important first step in validating the DHS instrument.

Background and Objective. The Moore Index of Nutrition Self-Care (MIN-SC) questionnaire has been used widely in both English and Spanish languages. The purpose of this study is to convert MIN-SC into the Arabic language and to test the translated tool for validity and reliability among adolescents in Saudi Arabia. Method. The psychometric characteristics of MIN-SC were assessed using college freshman students at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The validity and reliability were examined using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The construct validity was examined through principal component analysis. Results. The MIN-SC instrument was shown to be internally consistent with reliable scoring (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.910). Exploratory factor analysis resulted in 42 items loading on three main components: estimative, production, and transitional, with a factor loading of eigenvalues >2. The final model explained 38% of the variance. Conclusion. The Arabic version of MIN-SC was shown to be a valid and reliable tool for assessing attitude toward nutrition among adolescent students.

Abstract: Introduction: Motivation contributes greatly to learning, being a predictor of student performance. Thus, instruments that assess motivation after exposure to different teaching strategies and materials can contribute to the analysis and decision on its effectiveness. In this sense, the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS) instrument measures students’ motivation after instructional activities. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the evidence of validity of the IMMS, previously translated and cross-culturally adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. Method: Cross-sectional study used to evaluate the psychometric properties of the IMMS questionnaire, applied to 211 students from the first, third and fourth semesters of the medical course at José do Rosário Vellano University (Unifenas - Campus Belo Horizonte). The principal component analysis (PCA) with Varimax rotation and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were used to assess the validity and reliability of the instrument. Results: The PCA reduced the instrument’s items from 36 to 25 items, distributed in four dimensions. The saturation of the items in the dimensions ranged from 0.529 to 0.790 and the total explained variance was 63.12%. The reliability of the modified IMMS (IMMS-BRV), measured by Cronbach’s alpha, ranged from 0.76 (Attention dimension) to 0.93 (Interest dimension). Conclusion: The IMMS application in the remote education scenario, through asynchronous video lectures of human anatomy, resulted in an alternative instrument (IMMS-BRV), with fewer items (more parsimonious) and good internal consistency, demonstrating preliminary evidence of its validity and reliability adequacy.

Background/aimThis study was conducted to determine the validity and reliability of the Breast Cancer Cultural Beliefs Scale for women with breast cancer in Turkish society.Materials and methodsThe population of this study was composed of patients diagnosed with breast cancer who were treated for cancer in the Adult Chemotherapy Unit. A total of 178 women with breast cancer participated in this study.ResultsIn order to determine the factor structure of the scale, principal component analysis was performed. Cronbach's alpha was used to determine the reliability of the scale scores. The results explained 62.93% of the total variance of the scale. The result of the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin test was determined to be 0.813, and that of Bartlett's test was 723.56. Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was .74.ConclusionIt was determined that the Breast Cancer Cultural Beliefs Scale was a valid and reliable tool for assessing the cultural beliefs of women in Turkey.

The aim of of this research was to develop two-tier pictorial-based diagnostics test to identify students’ misconception about the concept of electrolyte and non-electrolyte, or Diagnostics Test for Misconception about Electrolyte and Non-Electrolyte Solution (TDM-LENON). Research method was Development and Validation. Questions were validated its content validity and reliability.  Based on content validity,  19 questions were deemed valid with  1 Content Validity Ratio (CVR) value. In terms of its reliability, 18 questions were deemed reliable with Cronbach’s Alpha value 0,706. All validated questions were applied to 34 students in one of Senior High Schools in Bandung. Based on this application results, students’ misconceptions regarding electrolyte and non-electrolyte solution were discovered, with misconception that all electrolyte are ionic compound was found as common misconception in the students (64,7%).Keywords: misconceptions, electrolyte and non-electrolyete solutions, two-tier pictorial-based diagnostics testABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan tes diagnostik two-tier berbasis piktorial yang dapat mengidentifikasi miskonsepsi siswa pada materi larutan elektrolit dan nonelektrolit, atau disebut Tes Diagnostik Miskonsepsi Larutan Elektrolit dan Nonelektrolit (TDM-LENON). Berdasarkan validitas isi, 19 butir soal dinyatakan valid dengan nilai CVR (Content Validity Ratio) untuk masing-masing butir soal sebesar 1. Berdasarkan uji reliabilitas, diperoleh 18 soal yang secara keseluruhan memiliki nilai Cronbach’s Alpha sebesar 0,706 yang menunjukkan bahwa tes yang dikembangkan masuk ke dalam kategori dapat diterima. Butir soal yang telah memenuhi kriteria validitas isi dan reliabilitas diaplikasikan kepada 34 siswa kelas X di salah satu SMA Negeri di Kota Bandung. Berdasarkan hasil aplikasi tersebut, teridentifikasi miskonsepsi yang yang dialami siswa pada materi larutan elektrolit dan nonelektrolit, dengan miskonsepsi bahwa semua elektrolit merupakan senyawa ion adalah miskonsepsi yang paling banyak terjadi (64,7%). Kata kunci: miskonsepsi, larutan elektrolit dan nonelektrolit, tes diagnostik two-tier berbasis piktorial

Factors attributing to the behavior of non-prescription used of antibiotics in Indonesia setting have not been identified yet. The availability of effective and efficient instrument or method to identify the attributing factors might be the cause of non-optimal identifying process. The objective of present study was to develop instrument, i.e questionnaire, to identify factors contributing to the behavior of non-prescription used of antibiotics. The questionnaire was developed based on factors identified on published scientific literatures. Face and content validity were conducted by having the experts’ judgement, while the construct validity was conducted by using the Spearman Correlation Test. Reliability was tested by using Cronbach’s alpha test. There were 14 rating and 8 multiple answer questions in the questionnaire that could be classified unto 5 domains. After conducting the validity and reliability test, the final questionnaire had a R value 0.276-0.628 and Cronbach’s alpha 0.833. This valid and reliable questionnaire could be used to portray the attributing factors of non-prescription used of antibiotics in larger area, therefore, the most appropriate intervention could be planeed based on the identified factors.

Abstract Background A blended learning environment is multifaceted and widely used in medical education. However, there is no validated instrument for exploring students’ learning in a blended learning environment in medical programs. This study aimed to develop and validate an instrument for exploring how medical students learn in an undergraduate medical program that employs a blended learning approach. Method Using Artino’s seven step approach, we developed a questionnaire to investigate how medical students learn in a blended learning environment. For pilot testing, 120 students completed this 19-item questionnaire. These 19-items were evaluated for construct and convergent validity across an expert medical education panel. Further item testing was analysed with principal component analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation for item reduction and factor estimation. Hence, validity was thoroughly addressed to ensure the questionnaire was representative of the key focus questions. Cronbach’s Alpha was used for item reliability testing, and Spearman’s Rho was used for the correlation between the questionnaire items and the extensively used MSLQ. Hence, validity and reliability were systematically addressed. Results Exploratory Factor analysis identified four factors F1 and F3: Resources: Accessibility & Guidance (14-items), F2: Learning behaviours: Social and Contextual (5-items), and F4: Motivational factors: Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation (4-items). Internal consistency and reliability tests were satisfactory (Cronbach’s Alpha ranged from 0.764 to 0.770). Conclusions The resulting Blended Learning Questionnaire (BLQ) was determined to be a reliable instrument to explore undergraduate medical students’ learning in a blended learning environment.

Background: Hope is essential for patients with acute myocardial infarction, which is often regarded as an active coping for those with life-threatening diseases. Higher hope consistently is related to better health outcomes. However, the instrument for assessing hope has not been previously tested among Thai patients. Objective: This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Hope Scale among Thai patients with acute myocardial infarction patients. Methods: This was an instrument validation study conducted from March to December 2020. A total of 213 patients with acute myocardial infarction were included and selected using a simple random sampling. The back-translation method was used to translate an English version to a Thai version of the scale. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cronbach’s alpha were used for construct validity and reliability. Results: The findings showed that the Cronbach’s alpha of the Thai version of the Hope Scale was acceptable (.75), and the scale consists of four factors, which explained 63.36 % of the total variance. Communalities in each factor ranged from .45 to .84. Overall, the appearance of the factor structures was reasonable and understandable. Conclusion: The reliability and validity of the Thai version of the Hope Scale were suitable for the measurement of hope in Thai patients. This scale can be used by nurses and others to assess hope in Thai patients with acute myocardial infarction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the construct validity and reliability of the Healthy Eating Food Index-2019 (HEFI-2019), which was developed to measure adherence to Canada’s Food Guide 2019 (CFG) recommendations on healthy food choices. Dietary intake data from 24-hour dietary recalls in the 2015 Canadian Community Health Survey - Nutrition were used for that purpose. Multidimensionality was examined using principal component analysis. Mean scores were compared among subgroups of the population. The association between scores and energy intake was assessed using Pearson correlations. Cronbach’s alpha was calculated to assess reliability. The estimated mean HEFI-2019 score (/80) was 43.1 (95%CI, 42.7 to 43.6) among Canadians 2 years and older. The first and 99th percentiles were 22.1 and 62.9 points. The mean HEFI-2019 score for smokers was 7.1 points lower than for non-smokers (95%CI, -8.4 to -5.8). The HEFI-2019 was weakly correlated with energy intake (r=-0.13; 95%CI, -0.20 to -0.06). The principal components analysis revealed at least 4 dimensions. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.66 (95%CI, 0.63 to 0.69). Evidence of construct validity and internal consistency support the use of the HEFI-2019 to assess adherence to CFG-2019’s recommendations on healthy food choices. Novelty: • Examination of the Health Eating Food Index (HEFI)-2019’s psychometric properties is needed prior to implementation • Analyses support the construct validity and internal consistency of the HEFI-2019 • Interpretation of the total HEFI-2019 score must be accompanied by its components’ scores, considering it assesses multiple dimensions of food choices

Purpose This paper aims to assess the reliability, validity and use of the Family Star Plus, one of several Outcomes Stars increasingly used as part of outcomes-based accountability approaches in the delivery of family support services. The Family Star Plus measures progress towards effective parenting but a lack of evidence exists on its psychometric properties and suitability for use as an outcomes tool. Design/methodology/approach Based on data from 1,255 families receiving a pilot support service, Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess the internal reliability of the 10-item scale, while principal component analysis (PCA) examined the number of constructs in the tool. Using matched data from evaluation of 80 families, correlations between the Family Star Plus and psychometrically validated tools were used to assess concurrent validity. Findings from a process evaluation explore practical issues around use of the tool. Findings Cronbach’s alpha indicated sufficient internal reliability of the Family Star Plus; however, the PCA raised questions concerning the internal validity the Star. Correlations between the Star and validated tools were not strong enough to support concurrent validity of the Star. Process evaluation findings highlight inconsistencies in Family Star Plus data capture, which may explain these differences. Practical implications Further work is required before the Family Star Plus can be considered for use as an outcome measure. Originality/value To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first peer-reviewed analysis of the psychometric qualities of the Family Star Plus.
