Mentoring is increasingly seen as a critical skill for modern business. It builds on a team concept that represents a win-win situation for the organization as a whole, for the mentor, and for the mentee. Mentoring focuses on work-related needs of the company while building the skills of individual employees. Our study incorporates an extensive literature review on best practices in mentoring, along with the results from interviews with 395 business executives in the Denver region. The discussion builds on a series of interviews conducted between 1998 and 2001 with executives who have had served as a mentor for at least one mentee.In examining mentorship theory and practice, we will focus initially on the challenge and expectations of mentoring programs within organizations, and how specific organizations face these issues. We will next consider the purpose of a mentoring program, looking at the objectives of the organization as well as of the various individual participants. The method for mentorship practice includes program dimensions such as the size, levels of formality, attitudes of those involved, and the various mentorship roles. Finally, we report how the mentee participants rated their experience.

Introduction: we usethe analysis of official data and the results of our own research to identifymajor issues in the work ofprobation inspectorates aimed at executing penalties in the form of correctional labor. Aim: taking into account current practice of execution of punishment in the form of correctional labor, we formulate some organizational and legal proposals for supporting the activities of probation inspetorates, aimed at improving the effectiveness of execution of this type of punishment. Methods: generalization, comparison, dialectical-materialistic theory of knowledge, questionnaire survey, expert assessment, statistical analysis, comparative-legal method. Results: our proposals for changing the current legislation will help to enhance the performance of probation inspectoratesin their work related to the execution of sentences in the form of correctional labor as a real and in-demand alternative to incarceration. Conclusions: main reasons for insufficient labor involvement of convicts sentenced to correctional worksare as follows: probation inspectorates and territorial bodies of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia do not conduct effective preliminary work that wouldhelp to create favorableworkingconditions for the convicts in this category; cooperation of probation inspectorates with municipal authorities at various levels and with regional state authorities is at a low level; as a result, convicts cannot be brought to work in full; there is no legal mechanism to encourage employers to provide jobs to convicts; regional state authorities have yet to introduce appropriate changes to regional legislation so as to reduce the tax on profits of enterprises and organizations that provide jobs for those sentenced to correctional labor; probation inspectorates staff lack initiative with regard to employment quotas in institutions where prisoners work; the personality of a convicted person who is prone to committing crimes and other offenses has not been studied thoroughly. It is obvious that there is a need to develop a mechanism for legal regulation of the functioning of probation inspectorates in the field of execution of sentences in the form of correctional labor. Objective: A growing concern in optometry is the incidence and prevalence of occupational musculoskeletal (MSK) pain and injury, with no studies assessing Canadian professionals. However, the risk of work-related MSK pain in optometry has become widely recognized by the profession and literature as having a negative impact on the health and careers of optometrists. The goal of this study was to quantify prevalence and location of MSK pain in Canadian optometrists and estimate practices that may be associated with MSK issues. Methods: A voluntary, internet-based survey (SurveyMonkey Inc., San Mateo, CA, United States) was distributed to all optometrists registered with the Canadian Association of Optometry (CAO). Survey questions were adapted from the literature to identify the prevalence and significance of work-related MSK issues. Results: One-hundred-twenty-one optometrists, with a response rate of 2.4%, and 169 ophthalmologists, with a response rate of 17% participated in a voluntary internet-based survey. When asked if they had experienced pain attributed to their work in the last 12 months, 61% of optometry responders said “yes”, compared to 50% of ophthalmology responders (p=0.06). Shoulder pain was reported in 41% of optometry responders, lower back pain in 37% and neck pain in 34%. This was compared to 28% (p=0.02), 36% (p=0.90) and 46% (p=0.04) respectively in ophthalmology responders. Optometry respondents most commonly attributed MSK pain to “performing the same task over and over”, “working in the same position” and “slit lamp exams”.  Conclusion: Many of the eye-care responders in our study were impacted by work-related MSK pain. The prevalence, location and severity of pain were similar to findings in other literature. More research is needed to determine best practices for prevention and solution of MSK pain among eye-care professionals.

This study aims to determine the dynamics of moral reasoning among adolescents who take part in the Islamic mentoring program in Banda Aceh. This study used a case study qualitative approach involving six research subjects from 3 high schools in Banda Aceh who had participated in Islamic mentoring for more than one year. The data collection methods used was interviews, observation and FGD. The data analysis used is thematic analysis. The results of this study shows that the moral reasoning of six research subjects has been at the level of post conventional moral reasoning, social contract orientation stage of legality and moral orientation with universal ethical principles. Dynamic moral reasoning in the six subjects is formed from several factors, namely religious education from parents, religious education in schools especially the mentoring programs, curriculum and mentoring implementation methods, length of time for implementing mentoring, mentoring environment, and continuity of mentoring or length of time following mentoring.

PurposeThe association of work and learning has been well established for many years. However, some of the terms used to describe the various pedagogies related to work and learning have been used interchangeably, with many lacking definitional clarity and scope. These include work-related learning (WRL), work-based learning, workplace learning (WPL) and work-integrated learning (WIL). This agglomerating approach to usage has resulted in pedagogical confusion and what some theorists call a “problematization” for the field, resulting in undermining shared understanding and potential benefit. The purpose of this conceptual paper is an attempt to unpack the meaning and application of some of the key pedagogical terms used in the applied field of work + learning theory and practice.Design/methodology/approachConceptual modelling and qualitative descriptions of each pedagogy.FindingsMany of the work + learning pedagogies do overlap and cohere but attempts to create umbrella terms, which apply to all theories and approaches, are misguided; definitional clarity with the different modes of practice is required for sustainable educational outcomes.Originality/valueA proto-theoretical model, along with a breakdown of distinguishing features of each term as well as their source in the published literature, has been developed to improve clarity and aid the future praxis of educators.

Norwegian sports today are characterized on the one hand by a need to innovate organizationally and rethink current practices, and on the other hand to respect national traditions and values of sporting culture. This dual responsibility poses a particular challenge to sports leaders of tomorrow. Whereas other studies have examined sports management education or sports leadership qualities as solutions to this challenge, this chapter examines the potential of a mentoring program to improve leadership skills. It draws upon qualitative interviews with participants, mentors and organizers of the 2019/2020 Mentor Program for Young Sport Leaders offered by the Norwegian Federation of Sports (NIF) and the Norwegian Association of Student Sports (NSI). Our findings reveal that this program enables young sports leaders to become more aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, the transfer value they represent to the organization is conditioned by prior experience, attendance motives and mentee-mentor relations. Consequently, this program reproduces known pros and cons found in earlier research on mentoring programs, yet offers something new in the sense that it allows young leaders to be part of the solution to issues in Norwegian sports by defining the relevant problems.

The mantra of best practices in corrections, while well intended, may lead to iatrogenic consequences. Community corrections and prisons are under increasing pressures to manage their caseloads; moreover, the current accountability and get-tough agenda in corrections demands offenders take on more responsibility for their behaviors. As a consequence, we predict more episodes of “panaceaphilia” or quick fix solutions because corrections jurisdictions in the United States are under tremendous pressure to handle their populations at this point in time. In this article, we focus on contingency management programs as the potential next panacea, not because they do not have a proven track record of success, but because they require highly skilled staff and make great demands upon correctional agencies’ decision-making practices. To help counteract panaceaphilia from happening with contingency management, we describe the theory and practice of contingency management, the demands they place on programmers, the type of research needed to evaluate their effectiveness, and how to prevent these programs from turning into punitive punishment regimes.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the formation, maintenance and sustenance of a mentoring dyad in higher education. By investigating the reflections of a female mentor and mentee, who both engaged in a formal Mentoring Program, the intention is to inform the design of future programs and expectations of participants, enhance the quality of future practice and understand the benefits mentoring might offer to the academic community.Design/methodology/approachThe researchers utilised a self-study research design to explore their reflections of a mentoring dyad in higher education. The project was informed by a personal–constructivist–collaborative approach, with participants maintaining journals throughout the partnership. These reflections were then compared in order to understand the perceptions of the participants as their relationship developed.FindingsSix themes emerged from the analysis representing the mentoring dyad experience under three categories: (1) forming – making the match, (2) maintaining – flexibility, responsiveness, and persistence, and (3) sustaining – desire to not disappoint and reciprocal learning.Research limitations/implicationsWhile this paper focuses on the experiences of two participants, the in-depth nature of this exploration draws out significant practical considerations that can be applied to the development and/or reinvigoration of formal mentoring programs and/mentoring dyads in other contexts.Originality/valueThese unique insights into their mentoring dyad over a significant period of time add to this dynamic body of knowledge. This study gives voice to female academics and lays bare their vulnerability and openness in sharing their lived experiences of participating in a formal mentoring program.

PurposeIn this article, we examine the experiences of African American engineering undergraduate students who participated in two student–faculty mentoring programs. This work provides critical insights about important factors that enhance students' experiences in higher education (e.g. the need for informal community spaces, mentoring and representation).Design/methodology/approachUsing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, participants were surveyed and interviewed about their experiences in the mentoring programs. Data were analyzed using basic statistical methods and thematic analysis.FindingsFindings indicate that students prosper in informal community spaces, where representation allows them to build mentoring relationships that are fostered naturally through common identities in a shared space.Research limitations/implicationsGiven the intimate size of the program, the sample population was limited.Practical implicationsTo benefit student development, mentoring program practices should consider dedicating funding and space for students and faculty of shared racial backgrounds and lived experiences to meet informally.Originality/valueThis work identifies explicit mentoring program factors that support the development of minoritized students in engineering.
