Waste produced since man living in social structure and community. Lately, waste problems becoming one of modern society’s interests. Population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and economic growth increasing solid waste significantly. In addition to that, education has contributed to solid waste. The incapability of government to manage waste causing problems in the health environment sector. The increase in waste generated demands the government to do waste management better. This research purpose is to analyze the most significant factor to waste generated based on sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, that can be used as basic planning for the facility and cost of waste management systems. Cities included in the research’s coverage area are the capital city of Sumatera Provinces, except Banda Aceh. There are two methods in this research. The first method is cluster analysis to classify cities based on waste generated. The second methods are ANOVA and discriminant analysis to determine the most significant factor of the classification result. Analysis cluster shows that Medan and Bandar Lampung included in a group of the city with high waste generated. Whereas, Pekanbaru, Tanjungpinang, and Pangkalpinang included in a group of the city with low waste generated. ANOVA and discriminant analysis shows that the most significant factor to waste generated in Sumatera Island is population density. Sampah diketahui mulai diproduksi semenjak manusia mengenal kehidupan bermasyarakat dan hidup di dalam suatu komunitas. Belakangan, permasalahan sampah menjadi salah satu perhatian utama di kalangan masyarakat modern. Adanya pertumbuhan penduduk, industrialisasi, urbanisasi dan pertumbuhan ekonomi, mengakibatkan terjadinya peningkatan yang signifikan dari jumlah sampah perkotaan. Selain itu, tingkat pendidikan yang dimiliki oleh masyarakat juga berpengaruh terhadap produksi sampah yang dihasilkan. Ketidakmampuan pemerintah di dalam pengelolaan persampahan menimbulkan masalah di bidang kesehatan lingkungan. Peningkatan jumlah sampah menuntut pemerintah agar dapat menjalankan pengelolaan persampahan dengan baik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor yang paling berpengaruh terhadap timbulan sampah dilihat dari faktor sosiodemografi dan sosioekonomi, yang nantinya dapat dijadikan sebagai dasar perencanaan sarana dan pembiayaan dari pengelolaan sampah perkotaan. Penelitian dilakukan di ibu kota provinsi Sumatera, terkecuali Banda. Aceh. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini terbagi menjadi dua tahap. Tahap pertama adalah analisis klaster untuk pengklasifikasian kota berdasarkan timbulan sampah. Tahap selanjutnya analisa diskiriminan dan ANOVA untuk menentukan faktor pembeda dari masing-masing kelompok yang telah terbentuk. Hasil analisis klaster menunjukkan bahwa kota Medan dan Bandar lampung termasuk ke dalam kelompok kota dengan tingkat timbulan sampah tinggi. Sedangkan kota Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang dan Pangkalpinang termasuk ke dalam kelompok kota dengan tingkat timbulan sampah rendah. Analisa diskriminan dan ANOVA memperlihatkan bahwa hanya ada satu faktor yang memberikan pengaruh paling signifikan terhadap timbulan sampah di ibu kota provinsi Sumatera, yaitu kepadatan penduduk.

Solid waste management has been part of human activities right from time. Effort by the Oyo State Government in managing the collection and disposal of waste generated in Ibadan is seen in the provision of Skip bins at specific locations across the city. However, despite the provisions made by the government, an emerging trend is the dumping of refuse along the median of some major and collector roads in the city. This study aims at emphasizing a planning framework for the location of solid waste disposal infrastructure (Skip bins) through the adoption of planning standard. The aim of this study was achieved by identifying the existing skip bins within Ibadan North. More so, a spatial analysis of skip bins and resident's access to solid waste facilities within Ibadan North was deduced. Geospatial techniques were used for this study; data from primary and secondary source were also used to corroborate the geospatial findings. The study identified a total of 37 skip bins located within Ibadan North Local Government, serving the entire Ibadan North. Spatial analysis of the skip bins revealed a clustered distribution which is consequential to indiscriminate solid waste disposal within Ibadan North.   The study recommends adequate provision and location of skip bins to contribute to a cleaner and safer environment and a design blue print for Ibadan North was proposed.Keywords: GIS, Median, Nearest Neighbour Analysis (NNA), Skip Bins

This chapter aims to describe the status and challenges of waste management (WM) in Rwanda. Currently, waste is managed by the Ministry of Local Government, with the participation of private companies which are only in charge of waste collection. In the city of Kigali, waste is managed by the city of Kigali whereas in other four remaining provinces waste is managed by the districts. Implementation of waste management policy is carried out by a government-owned company called Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) Ltd. The per capita solid waste generation rate in the city of Kigali is equal to 0.57 kg/person/day. A lot of legislations and regulations on WM are in place but their enforcement is weak. The Government of Rwanda should do more in terms of enforcing WM legislations and regulations.

Port Harcourt acquired the name “Garden City” for its neatness, beauty, organisation of the buildings and well constructed road networks across the entire city; but this once beautiful city has been overtaken by garbage. Hence, the objectives of this study were to find out why the solid waste management strategies employed by the Rivers State Waste Management Agency  and their contractors are not working and provide best solutions in curbing the challenges militating against solid waste management of the city. Purposive sampling technique was used to determine the sample. Because of the time constraint and the wide area of coverage for this study; 10 areas consisting of 10 communities were selected based on their size, popularity and centrality. Oral interviews and field observation were the methods of data collection and the data obtained through oral interviews were analysed through simple coding, groupings, re-writing, transcribing and interpretations. The results revealed that the solid wastes generated are uncontrolled due to overcrowded settlements; an uncultured way of living of the residents; lack of the needed man-power and technology on the part of the solid waste contractors. It was also revealed that the Government do not carry out proper monitoring and uses unskilled and unqualified persons to carry out their jobs. It was concluded that to adequately clean up the city of Port Harcourt, the Government should stand up to their responsibility of keeping the city clean and sensitize the people on the need to package and dispose of their waste properly.

The authors of this chapter provide an in-depth comparative analysis and discussion of the effectiveness of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in regulating and enforcing laws related to traffic management and solid waste management (SWM) in Kampala. The findings reveal that SWM is better regulated as compared to traffic management despite operating under similar conditions. Unlike the SWM sector, the presence of strong associations, diversity of uncoordinated rival players, massive youth population, and heavy political investments in the informal public transport sector has made it difficult for KCCA to regulate traffic in the city. The informal SWM sector in Kampala has received limited political interest. Thus, one would expect that the city traffic sector should be well regulated compared to the SWM sector. However, this is not the case; KCCA has registered significant more success in the regulation of the informal SWM than the latter. On the contrary, KCCA and the city police continue to have running battles with the operators of informal public transport.

One of the most serious challenges that city dwellers face in a developing nation is unsatisfactory solid waste management. This research investigates the impact of entrepreneurial innovation in solid waste recycling capacity in Abuja, federal capital city of Nigeria. The study employs a survey approach entailing the use of questionnaire for primary data collection. The data collected were analysed using a regression statistical technique. The findings of the study reveal that entrepreneurial activities can be used to enhance competencies in sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria. Specifically, we found that entrepreneurial innovation has a significant positive effect on solid waste recycling capacity (p < 0.01). The study concludes that entrepreneurial innovation will encourage efficiency and effectiveness in solid waste recycling practices in Abuja, Nigeria. The study, therefore, recommends that the government should put in place structures that encourage entrepreneurial innovation in solid management so as to enhance the sustainable solid waste recycling capacity in Abuja, Nigeria. Solid waste recycling has long been thought of as playing an important role in solid waste management. This research affirms that entrepreneurial innovation would aid the improvement of the solid waste recycling capacity thereby optimising the chances of achieving sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria. Currently there is a paucity of studies that examine the effects of entrepreneurial innovation specifically on solid waste recycling and sustainable development in Abuja, Nigeria. This study contributes an important additional dimension in the search for sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria.

Solid waste management is a global issue persisting in most of the developing countries like Pakistan. Current study briefly appraises the management and practices of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Bahawalpur city. Data were collected from different sources by using an in-depth interview and questionnaire tool. The findings reveal that domestic organic waste accounts for about 35.32% followed by debris, dirt and construction material waste (30.89%). About 273.69 tons solid waste is generated on daily basis whereas only 218.95 tons per day is collected and disposed. The collection rate of MSW varies from 61% to 80% in the city. The service coverage area was about 70%. The total sanitary staff was also very limited (735) as compared to the increasing population and served only 75% population of the Bahawalpur. The equipment and machinery used for MSW collection and disposal operation were also limited and out of fashion which were needed to be replaced. There is no proper landfill for disposal of solid waste which is openly thrown at five dumping sites and burned. This situation further creates many environmental and health issues. Recycling is almost absent in the city and behavior of the inhabitants also adds to an ineffective solid waste management in the city. It is necessary to create awareness among the people about bad effects of improper dumping of solid waste and the need to tackle this problem.

Generally, activities conducted by people generate waste. The waste which increasingly rises causing a big problem. Therefore, the role of community in waste management will strongly support the process of solving the waste problem in the community. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of engagement and active participation of citizens, as reflected in the attitude of citizens in the activities related to the response to the waste problem in the community. A descriptive method was used in this study to describe the involvement and participation in the prevention of waste. The result showed that the paradigm of PSBM (community-based waste management) appeared sporadically and has not yet received the maximum support from regional governments. A paradigm which is “people pay, the government manages“, has grown within the community for years. It would hardly change people’s behaviour patterns in solving the waste problem in the community since changing the city into a city that is clean, comfortable and healthy involved many parties, including the community.

The present alarming environmental world crisis is the uncontrolled generation and illegal dumping of solid waste (SW) that poses great harm to public health and the environment (Ali & Sion, 2014). Poor waste management may cause air, water, and soil contamination. The Republic Act 9003 (RA 9003) or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (ESWMA) had been in place for several years. However, its implementation was a challenge for every LGU, including in a highly urbanized city. Hence, the paper examined the level of implementation of the provisions and enforcement of prohibited acts on ESWMA of barangays as assessed by community leaders as a whole and according to their geographical location and income. Also, it explores the challenges encountered by the barangays and the recommendations of the community leaders in the implementation of RA 9003 and the local ordinance enacted by the city.

Palu city is the capital city of Central Sulawesi province bordering with Gorontalo Province. Indigenous people who inhabit the city of Palu is a community of Kaili tribe. Palu City was selected as a Special Economic Zone (KEK) for eastern Indonesia and consists of industrial zone, logistics zone and export processing zone. When viewed from the tourism business, there are several famous destinations such as Sibili Lake, Banua Mbaso, Hanging Bridge, Mosque 'Apung' Argam Bab Al Rahman, and Sis Al Jufrie.The method used by writer is qualitative with inductive data analysis. The results found that the city of Palu has shown passion in the field of tourism. Palu City presents a variety of new tourist destinations including natural attractions, culinary tours, and cultural tourism. For example Cars Tusuk Satay, Palu Bay, Four Palu Bridge, Solar Eclipse Monument, Nusantara Pavilion, and Palu Nomori Inscription. Then the tourists need to be given free space to satisfy the needs during a vacation. The business model implemented is that local people can entrepreneurship, gain profit, and create new jobs. Meanwhile, for the government through the Office of Culture and Tourism of Palu City is able to generate Pendapatan Asli Daerah (PAD) in addition to taxes from culinary executed by local communities. To support, the Office of Culture and Tourism of Palu City can hold and coordinate with all the agencies in accordance with their respective work programs. As the development and development of houses to become homestay homes and home industry, the integration of public transportation fleet, and build the concept of Information Management System (SIM) Tourism via online to package the tourism potential of Palu City.
