Genus and species have the following features: Body claviform, widest in region of ventral sucker. Tegument densely covered with tiny spines. Suckers small, widely separated. Oral sucker globular, subterminal. Ventral sucker globular, equatorial. Prepharynx very short or absent. Pharynx small, fine. Oesophagus divided into two short intestinal branches ending blindly anterior to testes. Testes globular, lateral, in region of ventral sucker. Vesicula seminalis small, genital pore in short distance before ventral sucker and opening of uterus. Bursa cirri and cirrus absent. Ovary globular, median, between testes. Mehlis’ gland long oval, posterior to ovary. Vitellarium weakly developed, in two lateral clusters composed of small follicles. Uterus in posterior part of body, with many eggs, covering vitellarium and partly ventral sucker. Excretory vesicle V-shaped, pore terminal.

Gymnophallid metacercariae found in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (‘Banjirak’ in Korean) from Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea were morphologically and molecularly confirmed to be Parvatrema duboisi (Dollfus, 1923) Bartoli, 1974. The metacercariae were morphologically characterized by having a large oral sucker, small ventral sucker, genital pore some distance anterior to the ventral sucker, no ventral pit, and 1 compact or slightly lobed vitellarium, which were all compatible with P. duboisi. Some of the metacercariae were experimentally fed to mice, and adult flukes were recovered at day 7 post-infection. The morphology of the adult flukes was basically the same as that of the metacercariae except for the presence of uterine eggs; the uterus was filled with up to 40 eggs. The nucleotide sequences (1,193 bp) from ITS regions (ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, and ITS2) of the metacercariae showed 99.7% identity with P. duboisi and 75.7% identity with Gymnophalloides seoi deposited in GenBank. These results confirmed the presence of P. duboisi metacercariae in the Manila clam R. philippinarum in an estuary region of Gochang-gun, Korea.

Earlier schemes of classification of the family Heterophyidae have been based in large part on such features as shape of body, presence of oral spines, number and position of testes, and distribution of vitellaria (Witenberg, 1929; Ciurea, 1933; Mueller & Van Cleave, 1932). Price (1940a) was the first to make extensive use of features of the ventrogenital complex (ventral sucker, gonotyl, genital pore, terminal male duct) and excretory bladder, and produced the first reasonable classification of both the family Heterophyidae and the superfamily Opisthorchioidea. In despite of the obvious significance of the rationale of Price's approach, later authors (Morozov, 1952, 1955; Yamaguti, 1958) have largely ignored the ventrogenital complex and recently discovered life-history data, and have used much the same sorts of features as earlier authors.

Gastric lesions, especially ulceration, cause significant economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. The study was designed to assess its prevalence, distribution and pattern in pigs in south-western Nigeria. Slaughter house surveys were conducted on three government-established abattoirs in Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states. Stomachs from 480 pigs were assessed for gross lesions, which were graded using a modification of a standard technique. Tissues from different regions of the stomach were routinely stained to assess histopathologic changes. Data were presented as frequency counts and analysed using analysis of variance and chi-square technique. Significance was determined at p ≤ 0.05. Gastric lesions were encountered across the four regions of the stomach with a point prevalence of 57.29%. The prevalence of lesions in the non-glandular region was 32.9%, with severe hyperkeratosis (13.13%) being most frequently observed (p < 0.05). Erosions were significantly higher in the cardia (8.54%) (p < 0.05), followed by fundus (8.33%). Gastric ulcers were significantly higher in the fundus (19.58%) (p < 0.05). Scars of healed ulcers and lacerations were also observed in the fundus (5.42%) (p < 0.05). The gastric lesion distribution across the four regions of the stomach and the occurrence of ulceration in the fundus showed an unusual pattern, which is rarely reported in other parts of the world. The reason for these findings in pigs in Nigeria is not fully understood; therefore, further studies are required to identify and manage these factors for increased productivity, improved animal welfare and enhanced food security. Keywords: prevalence; gastric; lesions; fundic ulcers; pigs

Dendrorchis retrobiloba Volonterio & Ponce de León, 2005 was first described from the swim bladder of Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) from Montevideo, Uruguay. In this study, we necropsied specimens of A. aff. fasciatus collected from Lake Guaíba, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, for the analysis of their helminths. The digeneans were identified as D. retrobiloba by their elongated body, oral sucker longer than ventral sucker, and 2 posterior lobes. This is the first report of D. retrobiloba in A. aff. fasciatus from Lake Guaíba and extends the known geographic distribution of this parasite.

The metacercaria shown in Fig. 1 was obtained in the laboratory from Gobies (Gobius ruthensparriEuphras.) experimentally infected with a Pleurolophocerca cercaria fromPeringia ulvae. This cercaria is regarded as the most interesting of all the Heterophyid larvae infecting this snail. It has been referred to briefly in a previous publication (Rothschild, 1938). It differs from typical Opisthorchid cercariae in the following characteristics:(1) The lateral fin-folds are continuous and extend the whole length of the tail. The dorso-ventral fin-fold is reduced.(2) The oesophagus and intestinal caeca (in addition to the pharynx) can be clearly made out.(3) The cuticle is more heavily spined.(4) The ventral sucker is better developed.(5) The penetration gland ducts (fourteen in number) are not arranged in such definite bundles.(6) Three acicular boring spines are present in the oral sucker. In other respects the cercaria possesses the usual characters of the group.

The aim of this research was to determine the percentage of estrus, performance of estrus, and percentage of pregnancy in local goat which synchronized with seminal vesicles extract. The seminal vesicles used in this research were collected from the waste of Banda Aceh slaughter house. The goats were allotted into 2 groups. Goats in group were injected with 0.5 ml PGF2á intramuscularly, and goats in group II were injected with 5 ml seminal vesicles extract intrauterine. The injection was done twice with the interval of 11 days. The goats which perform estrus sign are mated naturally once in every observation. Pregnancy diagnosing was done using chemical urine method 2 months after mating. The estrus percentage and pregnancy data were analyzed with chi-square and the estrus performance (onset and estrus duration) were analyzed using student T test. The estrus onset of group I and II were 29.33±4.62 and 24.00±0.00 hours (P0.05). Estrus duration of group I and II were 26.67+4.62 and 20.00+11.97 hours respectively (P0.05). The estrus percentage of group I and II did not show any significant differences (P0.05), those are 60.0 and 40.0% respectively, whereas the percentage of estrus from both groups were 100.0 %.
