Background: The incidence of workplace violence has continued to occupy a significant place in healthcare at a rate nearly double that in other industries. Those providing direct bedside care are among the most vulnerable to violence, including nursing students. Among the evidence-based tools which may be deployed in such circumstances is verbal de-escalation, or the practice of verbal and physical behaviors and actions meant to calm (or at least not exacerbate) the patient. This literature review outlines the history of research on violence against nursing students and identifies the next steps for addressing this problem. Method: A search for relevant studies included using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), ProQuest, Ovid, Science Direct, Medline, and PubMed databases using key terms such as nursing student, verbal de-escalation, aggression, and violence. Results: Search identified 19,000 articles but only 28 focused on violence experienced by nursing students and are covered in this review. Conclusion: Verbal de-escalation training may represent a promising solution for teaching students how to handle workplace violence. Furthur investigation of this and other solutions is necessary.

Abstract [Continued from the January/February 2004 issue of The Guides Newsletter.] To understand discrepancies in reviewers’ ratings of impairments based on different editions of the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (AMA Guides), users can usefully study the history of the revisions as successive editions attempted to provide a comprehensive, valid, reliable, unbiased, and evidence-based system. Some shortcomings of earlier editions have been addressed in the AMA Guides, Fifth Edition, but problems remain with each edition, largely because of the limited scientific evidence available. In the context of the history of the different editions of the AMA Guides and their development, the authors discuss and contextualize a number of key terms and principles including the following: definitions of impairment and normal; activities of daily living; maximum medical improvement; impairment percentages; conversion of regional impairments; combining impairments; pain and other subjective complaints; physician judgment; and causation analysis; finally, the authors note that impairment is not synonymous with disability or work interference. The AMA Guides, Fifth Edition, contrasts impairment evaluations and independent medical evaluations (this was not done in previous editions) and discusses impairment evaluations, rules for evaluations, and report standards. Upper extremity and lower extremity impairment evaluations are discussed in terms of clinical assessments and rating processes, analyzing important changes between editions and problematic areas (eg, complex regional pain syndrome).

AbstractBackgroundWorkplace violence is one of the most compelling problems facing health care sectors all over the world. The detrimental impact of workplace violence extends to affect nurse students who receive their training in clinical areas.ObjectiveThe study aimed to investigate the impact of witnessing workplace violence during clinical training on the attitudes of Jordanian nursing students toward the nursing profession.MethodsCross-sectional design was used in this study. Data were collected through electronic survey questionnaires from 131 nursing students from three nursing schools in Jordan. Attitude Scale for Nursing Profession was used to assess the participants’ attitude toward nursing profession.ResultsThe results showed that about 34% of student participants witnessed workplace violence during their clinical training. Nursing student participants who did not witness workplace violence showed significantly more positive attitude toward nursing profession than who did witness.ConclusionWitnessing workplace violence had a significant negative impact on how nursing students view nursing job.

This article reviews the history of research ethics and the documents that have shaped the public's perception of clinical research, and discusses specific examples of how these ethics affect clinical research of individuals with dysphagia.

The phenomenon of workplace violence (WPV) is prevalent in clinical settings affecting nurses and nursing students. Mental health nursing simulations may be used to impart knowledge and skills to nursing students to manage and prevent incidents of WPV. This article presents attained competency skills by nursing students after attending a simulation, and how they implemented their knowledge learned in their clinical rotations. Students attended a Mental Health Nursing Simulation on WPV and completed surveys. The simulation enhanced the students' communication skills, empathy, ability to manage verbally aggressive patients, ability to set personal boundaries, and ability to seek support from others. Participants reported physical and verbal forms of WPV and application of learned evidence-based skills in their clinical rotations. Evidence-based skills to manage and prevent WPV taught to nursing students via mental health nursing simulations can enhance their clinical competency, and they should be embedded in a nursing curriculum.

Introduction: Student Centered Learning (SCL) is an effective method to develop student's soft skills and hard skills which are very important to support their successful carrier later. This research was conducted to identify the differences of developed soft skills between students who learn with PBL method and lecturing method. Methods: Descriptive comparative method was used in this study. The samples consisted of 15 students who learned with PBL method and 15 students who learned with lecturing method. The sample for this research was selected by random sampling method. Results: The result showed that the average of student's soft skills score in PBL method was 122.63, while student's soft skills score in lecturing method was 116.27. Discussion & Conclusion: There was significant difference of student's soft skills in PBL method and lecturing method (p value = 0.038; α = 0.05). This study recommends nursing program management, faculty of medicine at the University of Syiah Kuala keeps PBL method running and develops other methods which facilitate hard skills and soft skills are development. Keywords: nursing students, soft skill, PBL
