Abstract. An experiment was conducted to produce superior pigs with improved growth phenotypes and survival during postnatal growth by injecting the sows with gonadotropin prior to mating.  The experiment consisted of 2 stages.  In the first stage, 12 sows were divided into 2 groups i.e., sows injected with NaCl0.95% as a control (NSO) and sows injected with PG600 (SO) prior to mating.  Parameters measured were growth phenotypes and survival at birth and during pre-weaning period.  In the second stage, 24 of weaned pigs (age 8 weeks) from the first stage were selected (6 males and 6 females from NSO group and 6 males and 6 females from SO group) to be used for measurement of growth performance.  The experimental pigs were raised and observed until the age of 28 weeks (7 month).  The body weights were measured monthly.  The results of the experiment showed that improvement of uterine environment by gonadotropin injection of the sows prior to mating dramatically improved birth weight with a very homogenous birth weight within litter size.  Improved birth weight and within-litter variation of birth weight improved pre-weaning growth performance and survival that finally dramatically increased weaning weight and total weight of weaned pigs per sow.  After weaning, pigs born to SO sows grew faster and had around 10 kg higher body weight as compared to control at the age of 7 month.   It was concluded that superior pigs could be produced by improving endogenous secretion of pregnant hormone during pregnancy. Key words: Birth weight, growth phenotypes, survival, prenatal growth, postnatal growth Abstrak. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menghasilkan anak-anak babi unggul dengan fenotipe pertumbuhan dan daya hidup yang lebih baik selama pertumbuhan pascalahir dengan cara menyuntik induk babi dengan gonadotropin sebelum pengawinan.  Penelitian terdiri atas dua tahapan.  Penelitian tahap pertama, 12 ekor induk babi dikelompokkan ke dalam 2 kelompok, 1) kelompok kontrol, yaitu induk yang disuntik dengan NaCl 0.95% (NSO) dan 2) kelompok yang disuntik dengan PG600 sebelum pengawinan (SO).  Parameter yang diukur ialah fenotipe pertumbuhan dan daya hidup anak pada saat lahir dan selama periode prasapih.  Tahap kedua, 24 anak babi lepas sapih dari percobaan tahap pertama (umur 8 minggu) dipilih (6 jantan dan 6 betinadari kelompok NSOdan 6 jantan dan 6 betina dari kelompok SO) untuk digunakan dalam pengukuran kinerja pertumbuhan pascasapih.  Babi percobaan dibesarkan dan diamati sampai umur 28 minggu (7 bulan).  Bobot badan diukur setiap bulan.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perbaikan lingkungan uterus dengan cara penyuntikan induk dengan gonadotropin sebelum pengawinan secara dramatis memperbaiki bobot lahir anak dengan bobot lahir per induk yang lebih seragam.  Perbaikan bobot lahir dan keseragaman bobot lahir memperbaiki kinerja pertumbuhan prasapih dan kelangsungan hidup anak yang pada akhirnya secara dramatis meningkatkan bobot sapih dan total bobot anak yang disapih per ekor induk.  Setelah penyapihan, anak babi yang dilahirkan oleh induk yang disuntik gonadotropin tumbuh lebih cepat dengan bobot badan yang lebih tinggi sekitar 10 kg dibandingkan dengan kontrol pada umur 7 bulan.  Disimpulkan bahwa anak babi unggul dapat dihasilkan melalui perbaikan sekresi endogen hormon kebuntingan selama kebuntingan. Kata kunci: Bobot lahir, fenotipe pertumbuhan, daya hidup, pertumbuhan prenatal, pertumbuhan pascalahir

Abstract Context: A common polymorphism in the GH receptor (GHR) gene has been linked to increased growth response in GH-treated patients. No former study has focused on the association to prenatal growth. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between the d3-GHR isoforms and spontaneous pre- and postnatal growth. Design: A prospective study was conducted on third-trimester fetal growth velocity (FGV), birth weight, birth length, and postnatal growth. Setting: The study was conducted at Copenhagen University Hospital. Participants: A total of 115 healthy adolescents were divided into those born small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age with or without intrauterine growth restriction. Main Outcome Measures: FGV was measured by serial ultrasonography, birth weight, birth length, and adolescent height. Isoforms of the d3-GHR gene (fl/fl, d3/fl, and d3/d3) were determined. Results: The prevalence of the d3-GHR isoforms was 50% but differed among the groups (P = 0.006), with a high prevalence (88%) in the group born SGA with verified intrauterine growth restriction. The d3-GRH allele were associated with decreased third-trimester FGV (P = 0.05) in SGA subjects. In the entire cohort, carriers of the d3-GHR allele had a significantly increased height (−0.10 vs. 0.34 sd score; P = 0.017) and change in height from birth to adolescence compared with carriers of the full-length GHR allele (0.57 vs. −0.02 sd score; P = 0.005). Conclusions: This study showed an increased spontaneous postnatal growth velocity in the carriers of the d3-GHR allele. Interestingly, we found the opposite effect on prenatal growth in the SGA group, with a decreased FGV in carriers of the d3-GHR allele.

This study was conducted to evaluate the body weights and measurements of 86 Gascon calves and their dams. The effects of the course of parturition, parity of the dams, sex of the calves, and live- or stillborn calves were analysed. Phenotypic correlations between different measurements and calf birth weight as well as the course of parturition were calculated. Internal pelvic measurements were significantly associated with the occurrence of assisted calvings and stillborn calves. Primiparous cows had a smaller pelvic area, lower live weight, and more frequent difficulty in calving compared to older cows. A higher incidence of difficult calvings was observed in bull-calves due to their higher (<I>P</i> < 0.001) birth weight. High and significant correlation coefficients were determined between the birth weight and body measurements of the calves as well as between the calf birth weight and the course of parturition (<I>r</i> = 0.34; <I>P</i> < 0.01). Negative correlations (<I>r</i> = –0.21 to –0.30) were calculated between the internal pelvic measurements of the cows and the course of parturition score. It was concluded that the internal pelvic measurements of the dam and the size and shape of the calf were the factors influencing the course of parturition in this study to the largest extent.

BackgroundParenteral nutrition associated cholestasis (PNAC) is a frequently observed pathology in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. Its pathogenesis is determined by the composition and duration of parenteral nutrition (PN) as well as the tolerance of enteral feeds (EF). “Aggressive” nutrition is increasingly used in ELBW infants to improve postnatal growth. Little is known about the effect of “aggressive” nutrition on the incidence of PNAC. We analyzed the influence of implementing an “aggressive” nutritional regimen on the incidence of PNAC and growth in a cohort of ELBW infants.MethodsELBW infants were nourished using a “conservative” (2005–6;n= 77) or “aggressive” (2007–9;n= 85) nutritional regimen that differed in the composition of PN after birth as well as the composition and timing of advancement of EFs. We analyzed the incidence of PNAC (conjugated bilirubin > 1.5 mg/dl (25 µmol/l)) corrected for confounders of cholestasis (i.e., NEC and/or gastrointestinal surgery, sepsis, birth weight, Z-score of birth weight, time on PN and male sex), growth until discharge (as the most important secondary outcome) and neonatal morbidities.ResultsThe incidence of PNAC was significantly lower during the period of “aggressive” vs. “conservative “nutrition (27% vs. 46%,P< 0.05; adjusted OR 0.275 [0.116–0.651],P< 0.01). Body weight (+411g), head circumference (+1 cm) and length (+1 cm) at discharge were significantly higher. Extra-uterine growth failure (defined as a Z-score difference from birth to discharge lower than −1) was significantly reduced for body weight (85% vs. 35%), head circumference (77% vs. 45%) and length (85% vs. 65%) (P< 0.05). The body mass index (BMI) at discharge was significantly higher (11.1 vs. 12.4) using “aggressive” nutrition and growth became more proportionate with significantly less infants being discharged below the 10th BMI percentile (44% vs. 9%), while the percentage of infants discharged over the 90th BMI percentile (3% vs. 5%) did not significantly increase.Discussion“Aggressive” nutrition of ELBW infants was associated with a significant decrease of PNAC and marked improvement of postnatal growth.

SUMMARYIn a comparative study of some factors that influence the body weights of 36 Friesian, 54 Holstein, 22 Holstein-Friesian, 24 Jersey and 17 Brown Swiss calves born during 1964–9 at the Moor Plantation dairy herd, Ibadan, breeds differed significantly (P <0·01) at all ages. Highly significant sex differences (P <0·01) existed at 4 and 8 weeks of age. The season of birth significantly influenced the weight at 4 and 8 (P < 0·05) and at 12 weeks (P < 0·01). The season × sex and season × breed interactions significantly affected the weights at virtually all ages but the sex × breed interaction did not. The birth weight exerted a highly significant influence (P < 0·01) on all other body weights. It reduced the residual variation as well as the differences and interactions between the main effects. After adjusting for birth-weight differences, body weight was significantly (P < 0·05) influenced at various ages by breed of calf, season of birth, sex × breed and season × breed interactions. The sex and season × sex interaction effects on adjusted body weights at all ages were negligible (P > 0·05).

Several studies in humans indicate that low birth weight predisposes individuals to obesity in later life. Despite the constant increase in prevalence of obesity in the canine population and the major health consequences of this affection, few investigations have been carried out on the association between birth weight and the development of overweight in dogs. The purpose of the current study was to examine the association between birth weight and some other neonatal characteristics and overweight at adulthood in a population of purebred Labrador dogs. Information was collected about the sex, age, neuter status, birth weight, and growth rates (between 0–2 days and 2–15 days of age) in 93 Labrador dogs raised under similar environmental conditions until two months old. The body condition scores (BCS, scale of 1–9) of these dogs at adulthood were recorded, with BCS equal to or greater than 6 classified as overweight. Dogs were split into two groups based on the median birth weight in the population: lower than the median (LTM) and higher than the median (HTM). A logistic regression model was applied to analyse associations between the general characteristics of the dogs (sex, age, neuter status), early life parameters (birth weight, growth rates) and overweight at adulthood. Birth weight was the only early-life parameter found to be associated with overweight (p value = 0.032) with a prevalence of overweight of 70% among the dogs with LTM birth weight vs. 47% in dogs born with HTM birth weight. Overweight was also associated with age and neuter status (p value = 0.029 and 0.005 respectively). Our results suggest that, as in humans, dogs with the lowest birth weights are more likely to become overweight at adulthood. More studies are needed to further examine this relationship and to explore the underlying mechanisms. A subsequent objective could be to identify preventive strategies such as an adapted early nutrition programme for at-risk individuals.

This study aimed to investigate the protective value of Eucommia ulmoides extract (EUE) on chicks under cold stress. A total of 21 compounds were identified in EUE using mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Ninety chicks were divided into a control group (CS) fed a basal diet and an experimental group supplemented with EUE, exposed to 10 ± 1 °C for 8 h per day. Results showed, compared with the CS group, the body weights (BW) (p < 0.01) and average daily gains ADG (p < 0.05) of the EUE group were increased throughout the study period. Chicks fed EUE had higher AFI (0–7 d, p < 0.001) and lower feed-to-gain ratios (F/G) (0–15 d, p < 0.001). EUE increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) (15 d, p < 0.05) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (7 d, p < 0.05), whereas it decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) (15 d, p < 0.01). The contents of IgA (7 d, p < 0.05), IgG (7 d; 15 d, p < 0.01), and IgM (15 d, p < 0. 001) were higher in the EUE group. Dietary EUE could also reduce chick organ damage. Overall, EUE as a natural feed additive can improve the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and immune level, and reduce the organ damage of cold-stressed chicks.

Objective. To generate contemporary postnatal growth curves for hospitalized very low birth weight infants. Design. Retrospective survey. Setting. Tertiary intensive care nursery. Patients. All surviving singleton, appropriate-for-gestational age infants with birth weight ≤1500 g, born January 1, 1987, to May 31, 1991, who did not develop necrotizing enterocolitis (N = 205). Measurements and results. Macronutrient intakes and body weights were recorded daily, with crown-heel length and occipital-frontal head circumference recorded weekly up to 105 days of age or hospital discharge, whichever occurred first. Growth curves were generated for four birth weight ranges: 501 through 750, 751 through 1000, 1001 through 1250, and 1251 through 1500 g. Compared to previously published growth curves, the current infants regained birth weight more quickly and exhibited larger average daily weight gains. These differences were most apparent in infants of lowest birth weight. Conclusions. The "premature growth grid" constructed by Dancis et al more than 40 years ago may no longer be a useful standard of early postnatal growth for present-day very low birth weight, appropriate-for-gestational-age infants. The new weight curves are a more accurate reflection of current in-hospital growth trends, especially for infants weighing ≤1000 g at birth.
