Research suggests that the relation between student–teacher conflict and children’s externalizing behavior might be reciprocal, and possibly also between student–teacher conflict and children’s social skills. Because children with externalizing behavior also tend to display low levels of social skills, we do not know if one or both of these student characteristics are involved in shaping and being shaped by the relationship to the teacher. In this study, we addressed this by means of a three-wave cross-lagged longitudinal study from preschool to third grade, including measures of social skills, externalizing behavior and student–teacher conflict. Bidirectional relations were observed between student–teacher conflict and social skills from first grade to third grade, and between student–teacher conflict and externalizing behavior between preschool and first grade. However, results from a model including both social skills and externalizing behavior suggested that externalizing behavior is a stronger predictor of conflicted student–teacher relationship than children’s social skills. Student–teacher conflict was predictive of externalizing behavior as well as of later social skills. Effect of children’s first-grade externalizing behavior on third-grade student–teacher conflict was gender moderated, with stronger effects of externalizing behavior observed in girls, combined with higher stability in first-grade student–teacher conflict in boys.

This research used the model proposed by Piaget (1977) denominated Grasp of Consciousness. This part of the theory aims to analyze aspects related to the process of cognitive functioning of elderly people. The objective was to characterize the process of Grasp of Consciousness of elders and teenagers, in a context of games of rules. The participants lived in middle class neighborhoods, and had attended public schools. The adolescents were on the first grade of High School while the elders had had already concluded it. The choice of teenagers is due to the fact that for Piaget, the apex of cognitive development is the formal operational stage reached starting from adolescence. However, the object of this research was the cognitive functioning of elders. Teenagers were included to help define the characteristics found, so to provide better understanding of the aging process in simple, controlled situations. This is a qualitative exploratory study, based on the Piagetian clinical method. This research was carried out with two teenagers and two young elders. The instrument used for the data gathering was a game of rules named Quoridor. The results indicate that, in many aspects, the process of Grasp of Consciousness of the elders and teenagers in this research was similar. However, qualitative differences were observed throughout the data analysis, and they may indicate a direction for the development of intervention in the cognitive aspects of elders. Keywords: Elderly. Piaget. Games. Grasp of Consciousness. Cognition.

AbstractAcademic performance during the first years of school lays the groundwork for subsequent trajectories of academic success throughout childhood and adolescence. The current study tests a model according to which a gene–parenting correlation in the first 3 years of life is associated with subsequent psychosocial adjustment and then academic performance in the first grade (as indicated by teachers' assessment of academic behavior and two subscales of the Woodcock–Johnson Test of Achievement, Third Edition). Drawing on multiple waves of data from the Durham Child Health and Development Study, we find that risk alleles for dopamine receptor genes (dopamine receptor D4 for girls, dopamine receptor D2 for boys) are associated with less sensitive parenting. For girls, parenting mediates the link between dopamine receptor D4 and all academic outcomes. There is some indication that parenting also influences girls' withdrawn behavior in the classroom, which in turn influences teachers' assessments of academic performance. For boys, some evidence suggests that parenting is associated with emotion regulation, which is associated with teachers' assessments of academic behavior and both subscales of the Woodcock–Johnson. Replications of this exploratory study are necessary, but these findings provide a first step in understanding how evocative correlations in the home may predict indicators of psychosocial adjustment that in turn influence performance and achievement at school.
