ABSTRACTThis article uses original research in archival sources, many of them not yet exploited by scholars of the early modern book trade, to demonstrate that the confluence of a printer-publishers' political and religious ideology and his trade was possible during the reign of Charles I. A detailed case-study of the family, life, career, as well as publications of Richard Badger (1585–1641), reveals that his emergence from the late 1620s as William Laud's house printer was rooted in a complex web of locality, kinship, self-promotion, and patronage that had at its heart a religious conservatism that flowed logically and, for a time, successfully into the movement now known as Laudianism. The article offers simultaneous insights into politics and religion in the Caroline book trade, and the emergence, flourescence – and collapse – of Laud's programme for religious change.

Anthony George Maldon Michell, mechanical and hydraulic engineer and innovator, died at his home in Melbourne, Australia, on 17 February 1959 at the age of 88. He had achieved a legendary fame through his invention of the tilting-pad thrust-bearing, a device which made possible much of the modern development of steam and water turbines and of propeller drives for large, fast ships. This invention issued from a fertile union of mechanical art with exact science, and it was this union which gave all Michell’s work its special quality; his motto, quoted from Leonardo da Vinci on the title page of his book on lubrication, was ‘theory is the captain, practice the soldiers’. Michell wrote for the archives of the Society a biographical note which illuminates his personality as well as his career, and it is fitting that this should be reproduced verbatim: ‘His father John Michell, 1826-1891 and mother Grace Michell, née Rowse, 1828-1921 were both reared at or near Tavistock, Devon, and there married. After their marriage they emigrated to Port Phillip, Australia, 1854-5. He (A.G.M.M.) was born 21 June 1870, at Islington, while they were on a visit to parents and relatives in England, 1870-3. He had one brother (John Henry Michell, F.R.S., 1863-1940) and three sisters, all senior to him by several years. ‘The paternal surname is pronounced with stress on the first syllable and with that syllable rhyming with “rich” and “which”. ‘His first name is that of his maternal grandfather, Anthony Rowse, 1798- 1866, the name being traditional in the family as that of a legendary French ancestor, Anthony (or Antoine) Rousse, of uncertain date and dubious authenticity, supposed to have brought the family stock from France. It seems probable, having regard to the persistent nonconformity of the family in England, that if there was such an ancestor he was an Huguenot. The paternal family, like others of the same name now diffused through the south of England, was also probably in part of French provenance, but of much earlier than Huguenot migration to England. But little is known to him of his ancestry beyond what is included above.

The questioning of"the English Reformation" as both a definable entity and a usable term by revisionist scholars, provides a timely platform from which to engage in a re-examination of one event which occurred daring that period of profound religious change in sixteenth-century England. The 1549 rebellion in the south-west of England has been studied using 'traditional* analytical categories of religion, politics, economics, and militarism. However, a new perspective on the rebellion is possible when the kinship ties of a group of leading gentry families in the south-west are examined. Although some historians recognize the close relationships which existed within the group, the focus is on the men of the families as local government officials without placing them in the wider context of their families. A close examination of the connections between the Arundell, Edgecombe, and Grenville families reveals a confused genealogical picture; one that suggests, however, that close kinship ties may have played an important part in the participation or lack of involvement of the family members in the rebellion.

This article explores religious adaptation among immigrant-origin youth in Norway, using the first wave of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study in Norway (CILS-NOR). To capture different dimensions of religious change, we distinguish between 1) level of religiosity, measured by religious salience and religious practices, and 2) social forms of religious belief, measured as the level of rule orientation and theological exclusivism. We compare immigrant-origin youth in Norway with young people in their parents’ origin countries, using the World Value Survey. We then compare immigrant-origin youth who were born in Norway to those who were born abroad and according to their parents’ length of residence in Norway. As expected, immigrant-origin youth from outside Western Europe—and those originating in Muslim countries in particular—were more religious than native and western-origin youth and more rule oriented and exclusivist in their religious beliefs. However, our results suggest that a process of both religious decline and religious individualization is underway among immigrant origin youth in Norway, although this process appears to unfold slower for Muslims than for non-Muslims. The level and social forms of religiosity among immigrant-origin youth are partially linked to their integration in other fields, particularly inter-ethnic friendships. We argue that comparative studies on how national contexts of reception shape religious adaptations, as well as studies aiming to disentangle the complex relationship between religious adaptation and integration in other fields, are needed.

The present study reflects upon the process of religious conversion from the point of view of communication practices between those already converted and the person still being in the process of conversion. The analyzed ethnographic material is from a Roma community near Cluj-Napoca. Among the Roma there can be observed the dominance of Pentecostalism. One of the conclusions of the study is that the central element of the religious change lies in the change regarding ritual communication. The personal conversion goes along with the redrafting of the moral aspects of a person, and this needs the new approaches of both the verbal (testimony and conversion stories) and non-verbal communication (furnishing the house, dressing, public consumption practices, etc.). The author highlights the importance of literacy during the conversion process. For the converted the congregation represents the primary publicity, but in the same time the others (not converted) are an important reference group. The converted are influenced by the engagements related to the family and relatives, and by the tension of not giving these up

The renegotiation of relationships of dependency within households and families in which Muslim teachings became implicated took place amid the consolidation of the political practice that is termed ‘republican’, and was similarly low key. Differences in the way men and women related to the sphere of commerce existed before the colonial period in Southeast Tanzania. Muslim teachings could be readily evoked to argue for changes that affected women. The villagers' views of religious change are discussed. Funerary practices common among non-Muslims have come to be redefined as Muslim. In addition, the chapter presents the problems surrounding healing and dealing with witchcraft. The development of witchcraft cleansing in Southeast Tanzania shows the resilience of pre-existing ways of addressing misfortune. Witchcraft cleansing constituted a significant field of religious practice, whose dynamics cannot be reduced to the concurrent spread of Islam. Furthermore, the chapter reports the survival and decline of sacrifice.

They include questions of demography and economic change, efforts to regulate behaviour in what is known as the ‘reformation of manners’, state-building, religious change, sexuality and gender, the history of the family, and the nature of noble and gentry society.
