In this study, we attempted to identify and characterise the spatial variability of small pelagic fish abundance using geostatistical methods. The small pelagic fish abundance was estimated in terms of spatial parameters using generalised additive models (GAMs). The ring seine fishing grounds in the south-eastern Arabian Sea exhibited seasonal variability in distribution. Results of the study would help in prediction of the major pelagic fishing grounds for traditional fishers which would help in reducing fuel and time spent on searching for the fishing ground leading to sustainable exploitation. The prediction model can contribute to the management of pelagic fishery along the Kerala coast.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the dinamic oceanographic condition and fluctuation in the catch of small pelagic fish. Study on the dinamic oceanographic conditions were focused on the sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll-a concentration (SSC) and water depth. The study took place in the area of Gulf of Bone located, data collection was started from April to September 2017. The data were collected using experimental fishing metode (large liftnet) and applications of remote sensing in satellite oceanography, which then analysed using Geographic Information System (GIS) dan Generalized Additive Models (GAMs). The result showed that the distribution of small pelagic fish tends to be within the area of temperature ranging from 29.5 to 30.0oC, the chlorophyll-a from 0.7 to 0.9 mg.m-3 and concentrated within the coastal area with in waters depth maximum of 100 m.Keywords: Oceanography, small pelagic fish, distribution, fishing ground, Gulf of Bone

Small pelagic fish aggregate within areas of suitable habitat to form patchy distributions with localized peaks in abundance. This presents challenges for geostatistical methods designed to investigate the processes underpinning the spatial distribution of stocks and simulate distributions for further analysis. In two-stage models, presence–absence is treated as separable and independent from the process explaining nonzero densities. This is appropriate where gaps in the distribution are attributable to one process and conditional abundance to another, but less so where patchiness is attributable primarily to the strong schooling tendencies of small pelagic fish within suitable habitat. We therefore developed a new modelling framework based on a truncated Gaussian random field (GRF) within a Bayesian framework. We evaluated this method using simulated test data and then applied it to acoustic survey data for Peruvian anchoveta (Engraulis ringens). We assessed the method’s performance in terms of posterior densities of spatial parameters, and the density distribution, spatial pattern, and overall spatial distribution of posterior predictions. We conclude that Bayesian posterior prediction based on a truncated GRF is effective at reproducing the patchiness of the observed spatial distribution of anchoveta.

Inferring the location and scale of mixing between habitat areas of lesser sandeel through information from the fishery. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 43–51. Sandeels are small pelagic fish that play an important role in the diet of a range of natural predators. Because of their limited capture by traditional survey gear, little is known about their large-scale distribution or the degree of mixing between habitat areas. Detailed information collected directly from the fishery was used to map fishing grounds, which were then assumed to reflect the foraging habitat of the species. Length distributions from individual hauls were used to assess differences in the distributions as a function of distance between samples. Sandeel foraging habitat covered some 5% of the total area of the North Sea. Mixing between neighbouring fishing grounds was too low to eliminate differences in length distributions at distances between grounds down to 5 km. Within fishing grounds, mixing was sufficient to eliminate differences in length distributions at scales <28 km but insufficient at greater distances. The lack of mixing between grounds may result in large differences in sandeel abundance among adjacent fishing grounds. Further, notable abundance at one end of an extensive fishing ground is not necessarily indicative of similar abundance at its other end.

<p>Ikan Malalugis adalah ikan pelagis kecil yang merupakan hasil tangkapan utama nelayan di perairan Laut Sulawesi. Pada tahun 2012 dilaporkan bahwa perikanan pelagis kecil menjadi salah satu hasil perikanan yang penting, dan hasil tangkapan yang dominan dari perikanan pelagis kecil tersebut adalah ikan malalugis biru (Decapterus macarellus). Jenis ikan malalugis memiliki sifat bermigrasi dan membentuk gerombolan kecil yang mana sangat dipengaruhi oleh kondisi lingkungannya. Tipe arus pasut di Teluk Manado (Laut Sulawesi) merupakan arus pasut bolak balik (reversing current). Banyaknya arus yang begitu aktif merupakan salah satu faktor yang mendukung habitat ikan malalugis. Diduga kekhasan sifat distribusi arus di daerah laut Sulawesi ini yang membuat kelimpahan ikan malalugis relatif tinggi di perairan Sulawesi Utara dibandingkan dengan daerah perairan lainnya di Indonesia. Kelimpahan ikan malalugis yang tinggi mendorong ikan ini menjadi komoditas penting dalam sektor perikanan di Laut Sulawesi. Meski demikian pada tahun 2012 dilaporkan bahwa tingkat produksi ikan malalugis mengalami penurunan. Hal ini diduga karena terlalu tingginya tingkat eksploitasi atau diakibatkan oleh adanya perubahan dalam kondisi ekosistem ikan tersebut di Laut Sulawesi. Oleh karena itu studi ini dilakukan untuk mengkaji tingkat daya dukung lingkungan terhadap keberlangsungan sumberdaya perikanan malalugis di wilayah perairan Laut Sulawesi.</p><p><br /><em>Malalugis fish is a small pelagic fish that constitute the main catch of fishermen in the waters of North Celebes Sea. In 2012 it was reported that small pelagic fishery became one of the important fishery products and it was dominated by the species of Malalugis (Decapterus macarellus). This species has a typical behavior which was highly mobility and forming fish schooling and strongly influenced by environmental conditions. The type of tidal current in North Sulawesi coast is reversing current. This kind of current could make a very active current in the water which is suitable for the habitat of Malalugis. This distinctiveness of current was considered as a trigger for relatively high abundance of Malalugis in this area compared to its </em><em>abundance in other water body of Indonesian territory. In 2012, total catch of this species has been reported to be decreased; thismay caused by either high level of exploitation nor changing on its habitat or even both. This study was conducted to investigate the capability of ecosystem and habitat of Malalugis to support its sustainability.</em></p>

Small pelagic fish (SPF) in the western Mediterranean Sea are key elements of the marine food web and are important in terms of biomass and fisheries catches. Significant declines in biomass, landings, and changes in the age/size structure of sardine Sardina pilchardus and anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus have been observed in recent decades, particularly in the northern area of the western Mediterranean Sea. To understand the different patterns observed in SPF populations, we analyzed key life history traits [total length at age, length at maturity, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and body condition (Kn)] of sardine and anchovy collected between 2003 and 2017, from different fishing harbors distributed along a latitudinal gradient from northern to southern Spain. We used Generalized Linear Models (GLM) to estimate the length at maturity and Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) to test the relationship with environmental variables (seawater temperature, water currents, and net primary productivity). The life history traits of both species presented seasonal, interannual and latitudinal differences with a clear decline in length at age, length at first maturity, and body condition, for both species in the northern part of the study area. In the southern part, on the contrary, life history traits did not present a clear temporal trend. The environmental conditions partially explained the long-term changes in life history traits, but the selected variables differed between areas, highlighting the importance of regional oceanographic conditions to understand the dynamics of small pelagic fish. The truncated length-at-age pattern for both species with the disappearance of the larger individuals of the population could have contributed to the poor condition of small pelagic fish populations in the northern part of the western Mediterranean Sea in recent years. In the south area, recent declines in body condition for sardine and anchovy were observed and could be a possible first sign for future population declines. This study highlights the importance of understanding the trade-off between the energy invested in reproduction, maintenance and growth at seasonal and interannual level to advance our knowledge on how environmental and human pressures influence population dynamics of small pelagic fish at local and regional scales.

This study aims to analyze the economic value of small pelagic fishing fisheries in Indramayu Regency, West Java. This research was conducted by a survey method using a questionnaire with a purposive sampling method and the data were analyzed descriptively quantitative and qualitative. The benefits of the results of this study are expected to provide information for decision making for the relevant government in formulating policies on fisheries activities, especially small pelagic fish in Indramayu Regency West Java so that they remain sustainable. Catching small pelagic fish is done by purse seine, mini purse seine, Millenium gill net, fishing line, and nylon net. The majority of the ship size used ships with sizes below 20 Gross Tonnage (GT). The types of small pelagic fish caught are Anchovy, Mackerel, Long Jawed Mackerel, Sardine, Scad, Sand Whiting, Tanjan Fish, Rucah Fish and Japuh Fish. The highest acceptance value of small pelagic fish in 2019 is found in anchovies, which is 8.997 billion. So that the highest profit of the highest small pelagic fish obtained in 2019 is found in Anchovy, amounting to 8,780 billion. The Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) calculation shows that the BCR value for catching pelagic fish species above is> 1 so that the fishing activity is feasible and can be continued. 99.7% of small pelagic fishing activities are influenced by the GT of the ship, the number of trips (months), and the fishing gear based on the calculation of multiple linear regression analysis.

Inner Ambon Bay is part of Ambon Bay; it is semi-closed area and a small pelagic fish fishing ground, especially anchovy. The anchovy is a zooplankton predator; therefore the existence of anchovy is affected by the abundance of zooplankton. The aims of the research are to obtain information on the composition, density, and spatial distribution of the zooplankton in these waters. Data of zooplankton composition were obtained from sampling by using plankton net at ten observation stations. Meanwhile, data of densities were collected using a scientific hydroacoustic system, BioSonic DTX supported with split-beam technology, on six parallel transect lines and one cross-parallel transect line. Geostatistical analyses technique was used to describe horizontal distributions of zooplankton, and vertical distributions pattern were plot in the graphs. The result shows that the zooplankton community is dominated by Copepod and meroplankton. The highest average density was found in August (9393 ind./m2),while the lowest density was in June (903 ind./m2).

Abstract The purse seine is the dominant fishing gear operating at the Tumumpa Fishing Port with a vessel of >90%. The purse seines that have developed are large pelagic targets, with the main catch targets being skipjack, mackerel tuna, and tuna. Tuna, mackerel tuna and skipjack are important commodities for fisheries in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the characteristics of purse seine fishing gear and its catch in the Sulawesi Sea. Data collection was carried out for two years from 2019-2020 at Tumumpa Fishery Port. Indications for the use of fish resources are calculated by comparing the length-at-first-capture (Lc) with the length-at-first-mature (Lm). The results showed that purse seines are very dominant in exploiting large pelagic resources (skipjack, mackerel tuna and tuna) with the proportion reaching 78%, small pelagic (21% scads and 1% other fish). The large pelagic fishing season using the purse seine vessel occurs in May – November, with 2 peak seasons in July and September. While the small pelagic occurs in May – September, with the peak occurring in July. The size when the frigate tuna was first caught was at a fork length of 25.15 cm (Lc) and Lm in a size of 28.52 cm for females and 28.29 cm for males. Meanwhile, the first scads was caught (Lc) at a length of 21.4 cm with the length-at-first-mature (Lm) being 20 cm for the female and 19 cm for the male. Based on this analysis, it was shown that the purse seines is a selective fishing gear for small pelagic fish but not selective for large pelagic fish.
