Studies have shown that people claim that privacy matters to them but then they often do things while browsing that are risky in terms of privacy. The seeming inconsistency between professed privacy concerns and risky behavior on the Internet may be more a consequence of ignorance rather than irrationality. It is possible that many people simply don’t understand the technologies, risks, and regulations related to privacy and information gathering on the Web. In this study, we conducted an experiment to determine the answer to the following question: If people understood the risks and technology, would that knowledge alter their level of privacy concern and their preferences concerning e-commerce Web site personalization? Results indicate that increased awareness of information gathering technology resulted in significantly higher levels of privacy concern and significantly reduced preferences for Web site personalization. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract Background Congenital syphilis is a vertically transmitted infectious disease with devastating consequences during the perinatal period, including stillbirth. On October 8, 2019, the CDC published a press release stating the urgent action needed to break the cycle of STD increases, including syphilis. The purpose of this study was to provide a brief historical perspective of syphilis coding, reporting, and monitoring system changes since 1992, discuss US syphilis incidence and trends, and assess risky behaviors among women with primary or secondary syphilis. Methods Quantitative data were obtained from CDC AtlasPlus, STD Surveillance 2018 report, and CDC Syphilis Surveillance Supplement 2013–2017. Results The possible association between risky sexual behaviors among reproductive-age women, such as the use of phone applications like Tinder, and increased rates of congenital syphilis have come into question. In 2017, risky behaviors reported by American women with syphilis were having sex while intoxicated (36.7%), having sex with an anonymous partner (21.8%), use of methamphetamine (16.6%), and having met a sex partner through the internet (11.6%). Women aged 35–39 were most likely to report of having sex while intoxicated (45.3%) followed by ages 25–34 (41.3%). Women aged 15–19 were most likely to meet a sex partner on the internet (16.7%). 22.6% of women reported the use of “other drug,” not categorized under “crack”, “poppers”, “cocaine,” “heroin,” “methamphetamine,” “injection drugs.” Furthermore, younger individuals were more likely to report the use of an “other drug” with increasing annual trends since 2013. Conclusion The highest reported risky behavior among women with syphilis was having sex while intoxicated. Unexpectedly, having met a sex partner on the internet was not among the highest reported risky behavior. Clarification of “other drugs” may be beneficial in understanding the risky behaviors among young women with syphilis. The correlation between risky sexual behaviors and drug use among reproductive-age women and increasing congenital syphilis rates warrants further investigation. A causal relationship between these two variables cannot be excluded until linked data are available, including further stratification of “other drug” categories.

In the last decade, the Internet has become a crucial part of human life. Everyday usage of the Internet has enabled rapid development of social engineering. The weakest link in this chain are naive users with their risky online behavior who are unaware of Internet security risks. As knowledge, awareness and behavior depend on human characteristics, such as maturity, age and education, the main goal of this study was to investigate trendlines of user risky behavior and security awareness through the lifespan. Results have shown the growth of online risky behavior through the lifespan and the growth of knowledge and security awareness in middle adulthood. In general, we can conclude that people who are more knowledgeable about and more aware of potential security risks are at the same time more prone to risky behavior when using information systems.

This research aims to present a number of findings on the perception that university students have on academic plagiarism. Data has been collected on the procedures of copy and paste, paraphrase, translation, as well as the need for citation of resources taken from the Internet. This study was carried out at the University of Lleida (UdL), via an online questionnaire administered to 1150 first-year students. The results show similar figures in the understanding of plagiarism with respect to two procedures: copy and paste (69.3%) and paraphrase (68.3%). In the case of translation, the figure is higher with 82.1% of students considering that translating a text is plagiarism. Regarding the need to cite digital sources, 13.6% argue it is not necessary. When analysing the results according to the different faculties and affiliated schools, no pattern of behaviour has been detected in relation to the typology of the degree students were enrolled in, but a trend towards different behaviours can be observed in the two faculties in which students have received specific training within the framework of subjects of their degrees (Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy and Faculty of Education, Psychology and Social Work). In these cases, the figures related to acknowledging plagiarism procedures are higher and so is the percentage of students who say that resources taken from the Internet should be cited. This leads us to conclude, in line with other studies that have dealt with the same subject, that training is key to tackling the issue of plagiarism in higher education.

This research examines the attitudes and awareness of foreign language (EFL) learners to the integration of English movies in their classes in terms improving their foreign language skills. 25 intermediate level students studying English in Faculty of Education and Humanities in Philology Department at International Black Sea University, Tbilisi, Georgia, participated in this study. Students watched the movies at home and films were analyzed at the lectures. After analyzing the films, 7 various questions were asked to students in order to obtain their awareness towards the using films in ELT classrooms. The findings of the study indicated that students have positive attitudes towards the use of movies in their classes in terms of improving their language skills. Until quite recently, it was difficult to find pedagogically sound film material to help students improve their language through watching film, and teachers had to spend many hours creating their own materials. However, with the advent of the internet there is now a wealth of online resources for both language teachers and their students. This study is remarkable for teachers who are willing to use movies in their classes as a tool to improve their learners` foreign language level.
