Laboratory Experiments in Fracture Propagation

Abstract This paper describes fracturing experiments in dry blocks of various rock materials. The results have application to evaluation of hydraulic fracturing theories. The block dimensions were 3 in.×4 in.×12 in. [7.6 cm×10.2 cm×30.5 cm] with metal plates epoxied to the 3-in.×12-in. [7.6-cm×30.5-cm] faces. Remaining faces were coated with soft epoxy to provide an impermeable jacket. The blocks were loaded in a pressure cell with an upper movable piston bearing on the 3-in.×4-in. [7.6-cm×10.2-cm] faces. A servo-controlled press applied constant stress to these faces higher than a lateral confining stress applied by oil pressure. Fractures were initiated by injection of various fluids into a small notch located on a center plane parallel to the 4-in.×12-in. [10.2-cm×30.5-cm] faces. Fracture growth along the same plane was assured by the stress conditions. Use of these experiments to test theories of fracture propagation required measurement of three variables, fracture width bi, and propagation pressure pi at the notch entrance, and fracture length, L. bi was determined by a capacitance method, and pi was measured directly by a pressure transducer. L was measured by two methods - either ultrasonic signals or pressure pulses generated in miniature cavities. The ultrasonic method confirmed the existence of a Barenblatt liquid-free crack ahead of the liquid front whose relative length decreased with confining stress. The metal plates bonded to the 3-in.×4-in. [7.6-cm×10.2-cm] faces prevented slip at the top and bottom of the fracture, giving a three-dimensional (3D) crack of constant height. However, the bi, pi, and L data followed trends predicted by two-dimensional (2D) (plane strain) elastic theory reasonably well. Fracture closure measurements after shut-in showed an initial period of leakoff-controlled closure and a final period of creep-controlled closure. A pi slope change at the transition is identified with the instantaneous shut-in pressure (ISIP) in field records and is higher than the true confining stress. Introduction Methods of predicting crack dimensions during fracturing operations are essential to proper design of field treatments. Many fracture-propagation theories have been advanced. Contributions have been made by Barenblatt,1 Khristianovitch and Zheltov,4,5 Howard and Fast,6 Perkins and Kern,7 LeTirant and Dupuy,8 Nordgren,9 Geertsma and de Klerk,10 Daneshy,11 and Cleary12,13 among others. However, practical methods of evaluating the theoretical work have been few. Mostly they have been. limited to indirect and generally inconclusive field evaluations. The Sandia mineback experiments14–16 have provided more direct evaluations. However, even here important fracturing parameters are uncontrolled or unknown. This paper describes laboratory-scale hydraulic fracturing experiments that provide critical data for evaluating crack propagation theories. In these experiments we measured the fundamental variables of crack growth under controlled conditions with known fracturing parameters. Experimental Methods All fracturing experiments were carried out in dry blocks 3 in.×4 in.×12 in. [7.6 cm×10.2 cm×30.5 cm] in size. Mesa Verde sandstone and Carthage and Lueders limestone were used as sample materials. Scaling considerations were important. It was necessary to scale down injection rate and leakoff to be consistent with fracture dimensions. The scaling factor of importance was taken to be fluid efficiency, the ratio of crack volume to injected volume. This factor was controlled through appropriate combinations of sample permeability and fracturing fluid viscosity. As fracturing fluids we used thick grease, hydraulic oils of various viscosities, and gelled kerosene (Dowell's YFGO™). Fluid efficiencies ranged from 3 to 70%. Most experiments were conducted at efficiencies between 30 and 50 %, a range typical of most field treatments. Fig. 1 shows the experimental arrangement. Shaped aluminum plates were bonded with Hysol clear epoxy to the 3-in.×12-in. [7.6-cm×30.5-cm] faces of the sample block as shown. The remaining faces were coated with a thin layer of the same epoxy to provide an impermeable jacket for confining pressure. One of the aluminum plates contained an injection port communicating with a 1.4-in. [0.64-cm] borehole as illustrated. A pair of brass plates with faces 0.2 in.×0.5 in. [0.5 cm×1.3 cm] was epoxied into the borehole at its center. These plates, separated by a gap of 0.01 in. [0.025 cm] served as a parallel plate capacitor. They were connected to a capacitance bridge that detected changes in gap width through changes in capacitance. This provided a direct, continuous measurement of fracture width at the borehole.

Kinh Ngu Trang oilfield is of the block 09-2/09 offshore Vietnam, which is located in the Cuu Long basin, the distance from that field to Port of Vung Tau is around 140 km and it is about 14 km from the north of Rang Dong oilfield of the block 15.2, and around 50 km from the east of White Tiger in the block 09.1. That block accounts for total area of 992 km2 with the average water depth of around 50 m to 70 m. The characteristic of Oligocene E reservoir is tight oil in sandstone, very complicated with complex structure. Therefore, the big challenges in this reservoir are the low permeability and the low porosity of around 0.2 md to less than 1 md and 1% to less than 13%, respectively, leading to very low fracture conductivity among the fractures. Through the Minifrac test for reservoir with reservoir depth from 3,501 mMD to 3,525 mMD, the total leak-off coefficient and fracture closure pressure were determined as 0.005 ft/min0.5 and 9,100 psi, respectively. To create new fracture dimensions, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used to stimulate this reservoir, including proppant selection and fluid selection, pump power requirement. In this article, the authors present optimisation of hydraulic fracturing design using unified fracture design, the results show that optimum fracture dimensions include fracture half-length, fracture width and fracture height of 216 m, 0.34 inches and 31 m, respectively when using proppant mass of 150,000 lbs of 20/40 ISP Carbolite Ceramic proppant.

Abstract A mathematical model of the fracturing process, coupling the fracture mechanics and fracture propagation with reservoir flow and heat transfer, has been formulated. The model is applicable to fracturing treatments as well as to high leakoff applications such as fractured waterfloods and thermal fractures. The numerical technique developed is capable of simulating fracture extension for reasonably coarse grids, with truncation error being minimized for high leakoff applications when the grid next to the fracture is approximately square. With the aid of the model, a generalization of Carter's propagation formula has been developed that is also valid for high fluid-loss conditions. The capabilities of the model are illustrated by examples of heat transfer and massive-hydraulic-fracturing (MHF) treatment calculation. Introduction Induced fracturing of reservoir rock occurs under many different circumstances. Controlled hydraulic fracturing is an established method for increasing productivity of wells in low-permeability reservoirs. The technology of fracturing and the earlier design methods are reviewed by Howard and Fast.1 In waterflooding, injection pressures also often exceed fracturing pressures. This may result from poor operational practices, but it also could be intended to increase injectivity.2 In heavy oils, such as Alberta oil sands, most in-situ thermal recovery techniques rely on creating injectivity by fracturing the formation with steam.3 Fracturing also is being used as a method for deterining in-situ stresses4 and for establishing communication between wells for extraction of geothermal energy.5,6 Finally, fractures may be produced by explosive treatment or induced thermal stresses (such as in radioactive waste disposal). To date, most of the research has been directed toward the understanding and design of fracture stimulation treatments, with emphasis on predicting fracture geometry.7–11 The influence of fluid flow and heat transfer in the reservoir has been neglected or accounted for by various approximations in these methods. On the other hand, the need for reservoir engineering analysis of fractured wells led to the development of analytical techniques and numerical models for predicting postfracture performance.1 A common feature of all these methods is that they treat only stationary fractures, which therefore must be computed using some of the methods of the first category mentioned earlier. With the high costs associated with MHF,17–19 and with increasing complexity of the treatments, it is becoming important to be able to understand the interaction of the physical mechanisms involved and to improve the designs. This paper presents a numerical model of the fracturing process that simultaneously accounts for the rock mechanics, two-phase fluid flow, and heat transfer, both in the fracture and in the reservoir. The model is capable of predicting fracture propagation, fluid leakoff and heat transfer, fracture closure, cleanup, and postfracture performance. Although the detailed calculations of geometry, proppant transport, etc., have not been included, they can be integrated in a natural way within the present model. Because vertical fractures are prevalent except for very shallow depths, the discussion is limited to vertical fracturing. The paper focuses attention on the formulation of the basic model and the numerical techniques in general. Applications to fracturing treatments and the specific enhancements of the model are described in a more recent paper.20

Hydraulic fracturing is an economically effective technology developing the glutenite reservoirs, which have far stronger heterogeneity than the conventional sandstone reservoir. According to the field production experience of Shengli Oilfield, horizontal-well fracturing is more likely to develop a complex fractured network, which improves the stimulated volume of reservoir effectively. But the clear mechanism of horizontal-well hydraulic fracture propagation in the glutenite reservoirs is still not obtained, thus it is difficult to effectively carry out the design of fracturing plan. Based on the characteristics of the glutenite reservoirs, a coupled Flow-Stress-Damage (FSD) model of hydraulic fracture propagation is established. The numerical simulation of fracturing expansion in the horizontal well of the glutenite reservoir is conducted. It is shown that a square mesh-like fracture network is developed near the horizontal well in the reservoir with lower stress difference, in which fracture is more prone to propagate along the direction of the minimum principal stress as well. High fracturing fluids injection displacement and high fracturing fluid viscosity lead to the rise of static pressure of the fracture, which results in the rise of fracture complexity, and greater probability to deflect when encountering gravels. As the perforation density increases, the micro-fractures generated at each perforation gather together faster, and the range of the stimulated reservoir is also relatively large. For reservoirs with high gravel content, the complexity of fracture network and the effect of fracture communication are obviously increased, and the range of fracture deflection is relatively large. In the case of the same gravel distribution, the higher the tensile strength of the gravel, the greater fracture tortuosity and diversion was observed. In this paper, a simulation method of horizontal well fracture network propagation in the reservoirs is introduced, and the result provides the theoretical support for fracture network morphology prediction and plan design of hydraulic fracturing in the glutenite reservoir.

Conventionally, high-pressure water-based fluids have been injected for hydraulic stimulation of unconventional petroleum resources such as tight gas reservoirs. Apart from improving productivity, water-based frac-fluids have caused environmental and technical issues. As a result, much of the interest has shifted towards alternative frac-fluids. In this regard, n-heptane, as an alternative frac-fluid, is proposed. It necessitates the development of a multi-phase and multi-component (MM) numerical simulator for hydraulic fracturing. Therefore fracture, MM fluid flow, and proppant transport models are implemented in a thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupled FLAC3D-TMVOCMP framework. After verification, the model is applied to a real field case study for optimization of wellbore x in a tight gas reservoir using n-heptane as the frac-fluid. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of important parameters, such as fluid viscosity, injection rate, reservoir permeability etc., on fracture geometry with the proposed fluid. The quicker fracture closure and flowback of n-heptane compared to water-based fluid is advantageous for better proppant placement, especially in the upper half of the fracture and the early start of natural gas production in tight reservoirs. Finally, fracture designs with a minimum dimensionless conductivity of 30 are proposed.

Abstract Following the increase in demand for natural gas production in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), unconventional hydraulic fracturing in the country has grown exponentially and with it the demand for new technology and efficiency to fast-track the process from fracturing to production. Diyab field has historically been a challenging field for fracturing given the high-pressure/high-temperature (HP/HT) conditions, presence of H2S, and the strike-slip to thrust faulting conditions. Meanwhile, operational efficiency is necessary for economic development of this shale gas reservoir. Hence "zipper fracturing" was introduced in UAE with modern technologies to enable both operational efficiency and reservoir stimulation performance. The introduction of zipper fracturing in UAE is considered a game changer as it shifted the focus from single-well fracturing to multiple well pads that allow for fracturing to take place in one well while the adjacent well is undergoing a pumpdown plug-and-perf operation using wireline. The overall setup of the zipper surface manifold allowed for faster transitions between the two wells; hence, it also rendered using large storage tanks a viable option since the turnover between stages would be short. Thus, two large modular tanks were installed and utilised to allow 160,000 bbl of water storage on site. Similarly, the use of high-viscosity friction reducer (HVFR) has directly replaced the common friction reducer additive or guar-based gel for shale gas operation. HVFR provides higher viscosity to carry larger proppant concentrations without the reservoir damage, and the flexibility and simplicity of optimizing fluid viscosity on-the-fly to ensure adequate fracture width and balance near-wellbore fracture complexity. Fully utilizing dissolvable fracture plugs was also applied to mitigate the risk of casing deformation and the subsequent difficulty of milling plugs after the fracturing treatment. Furthermore, fracture and completion design based on geologic modelling helped reduce risk of interaction between the hydraulic fractures and geologic abnormalities. With the application of advanced logistical planning, personnel proficiency, the zipper operation field process, clustered fracture placement, and the pump-down plug-and-perforation operation, the speed of fracturing reached a maximum of 4.5 stages per day, completing 67 stages in total between two wells placing nearly 27 million lbm of proppant across Hanifa formation. The maximum proppant per stage achieved was 606,000 lbm. The novelty of this project lies in the first-time application of zipper fracturing, as well as the first application of dry HVFR fracturing fluid and dissolvable fracturing plugs in UAE. These introductions helped in improving the overall efficiency of hydraulic fracturing in one of UAE's most challenging unconventional basins in the country, which is quickly demanding quicker well turnovers from fracturing to production.

Hydraulic fracture propagation characteristics in glutenite formation are studied by a series of servo-controlled triaxial large-scale fracturing experiments. The experimental results show that the fractures extend along the gravel and sandstone cementing face, and fracture geometry in glutenite formation is complex, which is similar to network fractures. The phenomenon of the gravel being split has not been observed. In the process of the fracture extension, the extension pressure is fluctuating, and the degree of fluctuation is more drastic with the gravel diameter increase. This paper suggests that using large rate and multislug technology would increase the flow ability of the carrying fluid. The conclusions are significant to hydraulic fracturing in glutenite formation.

Non-aqueous or gaseous stimulants are alternative working fluids to water for hydraulic fracturing in shale reservoirs, which offer advantages including conserving water, avoiding clay swelling and decreasing formation damage. Hence, it is crucial to understand fluid-driven fracture propagation and morphology in shale formations. In this research, we conduct fracturing experiments on shale samples with water, liquid carbon dioxide, and supercritical carbon dioxide to explore the effect of fluid characteristics and in situ stress on fracture propagation and morphology. Moreover, a numerical model that couples rock property heterogeneity, micro-scale damage and fluid flow was built to compare with experimental observations. Our results indicate that the competing roles between fluid viscosity and in situ stress determine fluid-driven fracture propagation and morphology during the fracturing process. From the macroscopic aspect, fluid-driven fractures propagate to the direction of maximum horizontal stress direction. From the microscopic aspect, low viscosity fluid easily penetrates into pore throats and creates branches and secondary fractures, which may deflect the main fracture and eventually form the fracture networks. Our results provide a new understanding of fluid-driven fracture propagation, which is beneficial to fracturing fluid selection and fracturing strategy optimization for shale gas hydraulic fracturing operations.

Hydraulic fracturing has been extensively employed for permeability enhancement in low-permeability reservoirs. The geometry of the hydraulic fracture network (HFN) may have implications for the optimization of hydraulic fracturing operations. Various parameters, including the in situ stress, treatment parameters (injection rate and fluid viscosity), and orientation of natural fractures (NFs), can significantly affect the interactions between hydraulic fracture (HF) and NFs and the final HFN. In this study, a lattice-spring code was employed to determine the impact of various parameters on the geometry of the HFN. The modelling results indicated that with a large stress difference, the global orientation of the fracture propagation was restricted to the direction of maximum principal stress, and the number of fracture branches was reduced. The geometry of the HFN changed from circular to elliptical. In contrast, with an increase in the fluid viscosity/injection rate, the evolution of the geometry of the HFN exhibited the opposite trend. The global orientation of HF propagation tended to remain parallel to the direction of maximum principal stress, regardless of the branching and tortuosity of the fracture. The variations in the ratio of tensile fracture (HF) to shear fracture (shear slip on NF) can be significant, depending on the stress state, treatment parameters, and preexisting NF network, which determine the dominant stimulation mechanism. This study provides insight into the HF propagation in naturally fractured reservoirs.

Summary Microseismic mapping during the hydraulic-fracturing processes in the Vaca Muerta (VM) Shale in Argentina shows a group of microseismic events occurring at shallower depth and at later injection time, and they clearly deviate from the growing planar hydraulic fracture. This spatial and temporal behavior of these shallow microseismic events incurs some questions regarding the nature of these events and their connectivity to the hydraulic fracture. To answer these questions, in this article, we investigate these phenomena by use of a true 3D fracture-propagation-modeling tool along with statistical analysis on the properties of microseismic events. First, we propose a novel technique in Abaqus incorporating fracture intersections in true 3D hydraulic-fracture-propagation simulations by use of a pore-pressure cohesive zone model (CZM), which is validated by comparing our numerical results with the Khristianovic-Geertsma-de Klerk (KGD) solution (Khristianovic and Zheltov 1955; Geertsma and de Klerk 1969). The simulations fully couple slot flow in the fracture with poroelasticity in the matrix and continuum-based leakoff on the fracture walls, and honor the fracture-tip effects in quasibrittle shales. By use of this model, we quantify vertical-natural-fracture activation and fluid infiltration depending on reservoir depth, fracturing-fluid viscosity, mechanical properties of the natural-fracture cohesive layer, natural-fracture conductivity, and horizontal stress contrast. The modeling results demonstrate this natural-fracture activation in coincidence with the hydraulic-fracture-growth complexities at the intersection, such as height throttling, sharp aperture reduction after the intersection, and multibranching at various heights and directions. Finally, we investigate the hydraulic-fracture intersection with a natural fracture in the multilayer VM Shale. We infer the natural-fracture location and orientation from the microseismic-events map and formation microimager log in a nearby vertical well, respectively. We integrate the other field information such as mechanical, geological, and operational data to provide a realistic hydraulic-fracturing simulation in the presence of a natural fracture. Our 3D fracturing simulations equipped with the new fracture-intersection model rigorously simulate the growth of a realistic hydraulic-connection path toward the natural fracture at shallower depths, which was in agreement with our microseismic observations.
