Abstract Dermanyssus gallinae are hematophagous mites that pose a serious sanitary problem in the Brazilian laying poultry industry. Its control is typically performed with acaricides, either in powder or liquid form. However, the intensive use of these products has led populations of this species to develop resistance. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the response of D. gallinae eggs and adults to products in aqueous suspension as per the commercial indication and registered at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply. The study used four different acaricides (Product 1- Cypermethrin, Chlorpyrifos, and Piperonyl Butoxide; Product 2 - Alkyl-benzyl-dimethyl ammonium chloride, glutaraldehyde, deltamethrin; Product 3 – Dichlorvos; Product 4 – Fluralaner) tested in vitro using the contact method. Distilled water was used in the control group. There was difference between eggs and adults in each treatment (p < 0.05, except for control); products had higher efficacy against adult forms. This result might be directly related to frequent D. gallinae reinfestations in poultry houses.

Proposition: The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro the color changes of esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures of different shades when exposed to four food colorings commonly found in the diet of patients. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures in the colors pearl, pearl blue, pearl white and colorless, which were immersed for 72 hours in five different solutions: distilled water (control group), coffee, tea, Coca-Cola ® and wine. The color changes of the esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures were measured with the aid of a spectrophotometer, at T1 - as provided by the manufacturer; and T2 - after colorings process. Results: The results indicated that the esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures of all initial hues are susceptible to pigmentation. Among the evaluated colors, all changed the finished look and the color of the samples tested. In ascending order, the color of the samples was as follows: distilled water, Coca-Cola®, black tea, wine and coffee. Conclusion: The substances that have a greater potential for pigmentation in esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures were black tea, wine and coffee, respectively. All shades of esthetic orthodontic elastomeric ligatures are susceptible to color change.

In order to evaluate the cytocompatibility and hemolytic properties of n-HA/PEEK biocomposites the nanohydroxyapatite/polyetheretherketone (n-HA/PEEK) biocomposites were successfully prepared. The mechanical properties of the biocomposites were proximal to human bone, at the same time, they had the optimal value with the HA volume content of 5%. The PEEK and n-HA/PEEK biocomposites with different HA content extraction medium was prepared with fresh medium. Simple DMEM culture solution was taken as negative control group. The pure PEEK and 5vol.%, 15vol.%, 30vol.% n-HA/PEEK biocomposites were the testing group. The relative proliferation rate of L929 cells was determined on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th days with CCK-8 assay. The cytotoxicity of n-HA/PEEK biocomposites were evaluated according to ISO 10993-5: 2009. The L929 cells morphology and growth on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th days were determined under inverted microscope. The hemolysis test in vitro of n-HA/PEEK biocomposites were evaluated through measuring erythrocyte lysis and ferro-hemoglobin freeing degree with indirect contact method basing on ISO 10993-4:2009. The experimental results showed that the growth and morphology of cells in pure PEEK and n-HA/PEEK biocomposites extraction medium had no difference from negative control group. Cytotoxicity test showed that PEEK and n-HA/PEEK biocomposites did not have obvious toxicity on L929 cells, and the cytotoxicity of these extracts was in grade 0-1. Hemolysis test suggested that PEEK and n-HA/PEEK biocomposites did not have obvious hemolysis reaction, and the hemolysis rate of PEEK and n-HA/PEEK biocomposites were 2.37%, 1.71%, 1.05% and 1.32% respectively, which are less than the national standard (5%). It may be concluded that the n-HA/PEEK biocomposites did not have obvious cytotoxicity and hemolysis reaction, which demonstrated that n-HA/PEEK biocomposites had good cytocompatibility.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to determine the most suitable pretreatment to enhance the tetrazolium test in seeds of the Epidendrum genus. Initially, mature capsules were harvested at El Escorial village, in the municipality of Pamplona, Colombia. Subsequently, the seeds were subjected to five pretreatments: deionized water, 0.5% NaClO, 1.0% NaClO, 10.0% sucrose and a control group. Using the syringe method with cloth filter, the seeds were rinsed with distilled water and subjected to two concentrations of tetrazolium solution (0.25%, 1.0%) and three exposure times (6 h, 24 h and 48 h). Finally, the tetrazolium viability test results were correlated with the in vitro germination test. It was found that the use of deionized water improves the efficiency of the tetrazolium test in seeds of Epidendrum fimbriatum and E. microtum; as in seeds of E. elongatum when using 1.0% tetrazolium for 24 h. Similarly, a high correlation was found between viability and germination, using deionized water and 10.0% sucrose, with homogeneous results with each other.

ABSTRACT Aim This study was undertaken to study the effect of three most commonly used dentifrices for denture cleaning and to find out any positive association between number of strokes by toothbrush and surface roughness of acrylic resin. Materials and methods About 40 acrylic rectangular blocks with high finish were polished until surface roughness was calculated as 0 µm. The materials tested were distilled water as a control group, Patanjali Dant Kanti, Colgate Total Cream, and Cleansodent as dentifrices. Stroking was done with dentifrices, and surface roughness readings were recorded at 1,000, 9,000, and 18,000 strokes. Results Patanjali Dant Kanti was found to have maximum abrasive potential followed by Colgate Total Cream, followed by Cleansodent and least by distilled water. Conclusion Surface roughness was found to be directly proportional to the type, size, and fineness of the abrasive component used; the professional denture cleanser (Cleansodent) has less abrasive potential than the regular toothpastes. Among those tested, the highest abrasive potential was found in Patanjali Dant Kanti and lowest by Cleansodent (denture cleanser). Clinical significance The patient as well as dentist should choose the dentifrice with utmost care noting the size and type of abrasives used. Washing the dentures normally with water without toothbrush daily and cleaning of dentures once in 10 to 15 days with a soft toothbrush and professional denture cleanser should be the line of maintenance of dentures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro the effectiveness of the dentin bonding system All Bond 2 associated with Resinomer (Bisco), and of Vitrebond (3M) glass ionomer cement fresh-mixed, both used in the bonded amalgam technique, to prevent short-term microleakage in class II cavities restored with Dispersalloy (Dentsply), an admixed alloy. The control group utilized the Copalite (Cooley & Cooley) varnish. Forty five sound human extracted premolars were used. Class II cavity preparations were made on the mesial and distal surfaces of non-carious teeth, with the gingival margins wall established 1mm under the cementum enamel junction. The specimens were divided randomly into three groups with thirty cavities in each group. The teeth were stored in distilled water for 24 hours and were thermocyled through 500 cycles in distilled water between 5°C and 55°C with a dwell time of 15 seconds. The apices and roots of the teeth were sealed. They were placed in a 37°C bath of 0.5% basic fuchsin dye for 24 hours. The teeth were washed in tap water for 24 hours and cut. The microleakage scores per restoration were averaged and three values of various test groups were subjected to the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test at a significance level of p < 0.05. The All Bond 2/Resinomer showed significantly less microleakage at gingival margins than the Vitrebond and Copalite lined to amalgam restorations. The Vitrebond fresh mixed, lined to amalgam restorations, showed significantly less microleakage than the Copalite lined to amalgam restorations.

The aim of this study was to compare the surface roughness and gloss of polymer-infiltrated ceramics after simulated in vitro toothbrushing in different storage mediums. Four polymer- infiltrated ceramics were evaluated, Lava ultimate (LU), Vita enamic (EN), Shofu (SH), and Crystal ultra (CU). The control group was a feldspathic ceramic, Vita Mark II (VM). One hundred and twenty specimens (12 × 14 × 2.5 mm) were prepared using a precision saw. For each material (n = 24), the specimens were allocated into two groups, polished and stained. The specimens of each group were stored (for 7 days) in either citric acid (0.2N) or distilled water. Data for surface gloss (ΔE*SCE-SCI) and roughness (Ra) were evaluated before (baseline) and after simulated toothbrushing. For toothbrushing simulation, a toothpaste slurry containing a toothpaste of 100 relative dentin abrasion (RDA) and 0.3 mL distilled water was used for 3650 cycles (7300 strokes) for each specimen. Data were analyzed using t-test and ANOVA. A p-value of ≤ to 0.05 was considered significant. The highest mean value of surface gloss was identified in CU (stained—water) (4.3 (0.47)) (ΔE*) and EN (stained—acid) (4.3 (1.00)) (ΔE*) specimens, whereas the lowest mean value was shown by SH (stained—acid) (2.04 (0.42)) (ΔE*) samples. The highest mean value of surface roughness was observed in SH (0.40 (0.99)) Ra (stained—acid) whereas the lowest in VM (0.13 (0.039)) Ra (polished—water). A significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed in surface roughness and gloss between the materials with simulated toothbrushing, except in VM and LU, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that simulated toothbrushing impacts on surface roughness and gloss, irrespective of the storage medium.

The incorporation of polymerizable cationic monomers has been attempted to generate dental resinous materials with antibacterial activity. This study tested the hypothesis that a dental adhesive containing a cationic monomer, methacryloxylethyl cetyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMAE-CB), would influence biofilm formation and gtf gene expression of Streptococcus mutans. The effect of the photo-polymerized DMAE-CB-incorporated adhesive on in vitro biofilm accumulation was investigated with spectrophotometry and scanning electron microscopy. The relative level of gtf gene expression by Streptococcus mutans in the biofilm was quantified by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain-reaction. The DMAE-CB-incorporated adhesive significantly decreased bio-film accumulation on its surface ( P < 0.05), and suppressed the expression of gtfB and gtfC of Streptococcus mutans in the biofilm ( P < 0.05). The results suggest that the cured DMAE-CB-incorporated adhesive may hamper biofilm accumulation via selective down-regulation of the expression of gtf genes in Streptococcus mutans.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of agents available in whitening toothpastes (Crest® and Sensodyne®) in vitro on the force decay of elastomeric chains used in orthodontics. Materials and Methods: A total of 300 specimens of elastomeric chains were divided into five groups (n = 60) and were evaluated. These groups included (1) the regular Crest® toothpaste and distilled water solution, (2) whitening Crest® toothpaste and distilled water solution, (3) regular Sensodyne® toothpaste and distilled water solution, (4) whitening Sensodyne® toothpaste and distilled water solution, and (5) distilled water as a control group. The samples' force was measured using Instron at intervals of 0, 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Data were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: At the initial time point, the difference in the force values of elastomeric chain between any of the groups was not significant (P > 0.05). On the 1st day, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between all groups except the groups of whitening Crest®, regular, and whitening Sensodyne® (P > 0.05). On days 7, 14, and 28, the rate of decline for all groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusions: According to the results obtained in the present study, it seems that toothpastes without whitening agents have less effect on force decay of elastomeric chain over time.

Latar Belakang: Didecyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride merupakan salah satu jenis desinfektan yang mengandung senyawa antimikroba. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui konsentrasi hambat minimal  antimikroba Didecyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride terhadap isolat bakteri dari ruang perawatan RS Al-Ihsan Bandung. Metode: metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu Tru Experiment dengan menggunakan desain rancangan acak lengkap. Sampel penelitian terdiri atas 6 kelompok perlakuan yang masing-masing dilakukan 4 kali pengulangan. Data dianalisis secara statistik dengan menggunakan Anova  satu arah dengan uji lanjut menggunakan analisis Duncan (α=0,05). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Laboratorium Hayati Institut Teknologi Bandung. Hasil: hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Didecyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride pada berbagai konsentrasi 50%, 25%, 12,5%, 6,25%, 3,12%, dan 0,00 (kontrol) memiliki daya antimikroba terhadap isolat bakteri konsentrasi 106/mL secara in vitro dengan metode sumuran modifikasi Kirby-Bauer pada cawan petri yang berisi medium agar nutrien. Uji statistik menunjukkan pengaruh yang signifikan pada daya hambat dengan penggunaan konsentrasi Didecyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride yang berbeda. Hasil uji lanjut analisis Duncan menunjukkan beda rata-rata yang bermakna untuk perlakuan konsentrasi hambat minimal Didecyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride 3,12% memberikan daya hambat terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri rata-rata 0,378 cm (3,78 mm) dengan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,000. Kesimpulan: konsentrasi  hambat minimal Didecyl Dimethyl Ammonium Chloride sebagai antibakteri yaitu 3,12%.

ABSTRACTObjectives: The aim of this study was to compare the color stability of three acrylic based hard liners (Ufi gel hard, Dura-Liner II, Tokuso Rebase) and two silicone based soft liners (Ufi gel permanent, Molloplast B) by using the colorimeter.Methods: Sixty disc-shaped samples, with uniform size of 10 mm diameter and 2 mm in thickness were fabricated for each material. Thirty samples were made as control group in distilled water and the remaining thirty samples were weathered in accelerated aging chamber. Color measurements were made before and after distilled water and aging. Data were statistically analyzed using nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests.Results: Data showed that there are significant differences among materials in both after distilled water and aging treatments (P>.001). These results indicated that the most discolored liner material was Dura Liner II after aging (ΔE*=16.30) and the least discolored material was Ufi gel permanent after distilled water (ΔE*=0.41).Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, silicone based liner materials are considered to be more color stable than acrylic based liner materials.
