Today, the world is changing, re-establishing the role of education to have a developed society. This article aims to explore the practical application of Andragogy as a key element for creating a sustainable lifelong learning society, to propose strategies for developing a lifelong learning society using andragogical concepts, to enhance ‘andragogy' as a scientific academic discipline and to expand on the horizon of andragogical assumptions and processes put forth by Malcolm Knowles. The literature on andragogy demonstrates the need to consider the future of andragogy, which may strengthen the theory and allow for the assumptions and processes to further guide this aspect of adult education. While the journey towards a lifelong learning society will continue to evolve, the lessons learned may help to identify key facilitating factors as well as pitfalls to be avoided in formulating more comprehensive lifelong learning society development strategies in the future.

AbstractThis chapter provides insight into the rationale, background and key concepts of the book and will discuss relevant theoretical considerations, contexts and discourses. The complexity surrounding the conceptual understanding of active citizenship, adult education and vulnerability will be considered, and approaches towards achieving a shared understanding of the nature of adult education and lifelong learning will be addressed within this chapter. In this book, the concept of active citizenship is used as a conceptual lens to understand the role of adult education in including young adults in active social, political and economic participation and engagement. The findings indicate that the social, economic and political dimensions of active citizenship, encompassing the development of social competences, labour market skills as well as civic and political participation, have been related to various educational initiatives (programmes) to engage young adults in active participation. The chapter will open the discussion of the cross-national complexity and interdependencies between adult education, social inclusion and active participatory citizenship, which underpin the dialogue offered in the seven contributions within this book.

This paper discusses the role of policies in promoting or hindering professionalisation in adult education in different contexts. The paper draws generalisations based on three case studies: India, Colombia and Denmark, where professionalisation of adult education is negligible. The methodology includes case studies, policy analysis and a comparative perspective. The paper concludes that the professionalisation of adult education has diminished with the emergence of lifelong learning because the focus of policies has shifted to learning outcomes rather than educators. Stakeholders who favour the professionalisation of adult education and learning, therefore need to ensure the development of distinctive offers, create a market for them and get them acknowledged to convince policy makers for investment.

The article includes considerations on different version of lifelong learning in contemporary culture. Four approaches are analysed. The first one is classical, connected mostly with adult education,. In the second, lifelong learning is incorporated in neoliberal vision of man and society and is treated as a way of permanent change of one’s knowledge and skills to be competitive in a job market. Third approach relates to the role of popular culture in shaping man’s identity by developing ability to accept and quickly forget enormous numer of stimulus from mass media and consumption area. The core of last approach includes the conviction that just man’s passions are the best and deepest drive for permanent personal growth.

The findings of the research showed that career development services have a role to play in developing student’s lifelong learning self-efficacy. It showed that there was no significant difference between the mean ratings of vocational and adult education lecturers on the role of career development services in developing student’s lifelong learning self-efficacy. These findings showed that vocational and adult education lecturers have the same perception on the role of career development services in developing student’s lifelong learning self-efficacy. This would help to instil confidence and positive attitude on students and working adults so that they can continuously learn new skills that would stimulate them for lifelong learning activities. Keywords: career development services, lifelong learning, work environment, student’s self-efficacy.
