The fabled “wide open spaces” of the west make travel an integral, though expensive, part of most extension programs. As an alternative, Utah State Univ. has been successful in targeting a major extension audience for service via satellite teleconferences. The audience we have worked with consists primarily of landscape managers at institutional facilities, such as schools, cities, churches, hospitals, and parks, who do not have formal training in horticulture. The primary impetus and key to the success of this program is a collaboration between the university (provides content material and production) and an outside institution (provides satellite broadcasting and receives employee training). As a result, the program simultaneously reaches three main audiences: employees of the partnering institution, county extension audiences throughout the state, and any private party with a satellite who watches. Keys to the success of this program include a statewide system of satellite dishes at all county extension offices, close collaboration between content and distance-learning specialists, marketing assistance to county agents, endorsement of the program for employee training by employers, a workbook to supplement broadcast material, administrative support, and careful identification of the target audience. Concepts we are struggling with include bridging regional to national audiences and improved marketing.

The Missouri Automated Radiology System recently passed its tenth year of clinical operation at the University of Missouri. This article presents the views of a radiologist who has been instrumental in the conceptual development and administrative support of MARS for most of this period, an economist who evaluated MARS from 1972 to 1974 as part of her doctoral dissertation, and a computer scientist who has worked for two years in the development of a Standard MUMPS version of MARS. The first section provides a historical perspective. The second deals with economic considerations of the present MARS system, and suggests those improvements which offer the greatest economic benefits. The final section discusses the new approaches employed in the latest version of MARS, as well as areas for further application in the overall radiology and hospital environment. A complete bibliography on MARS is provided for further reading.

The University of Florida / IFAS South Florida Beef Forage Program (SFBFP) is composed of county Extension faculty and state specialists.  The members, in conjunction with the UF/IFAS Program Evaluation and Organizational Development unit, created a survey in 1982, which is used to evaluate ranch management practices.  The survey is updated and distributed every 5 years to ranchers in 14 South Florida counties: Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Martin, Okeechobee, Polk, and Sarasota.  The responses are anonymous.

AbstractThis paper examines the multilingual translation efforts of a group of university student volunteers during the COVID-19 outbreak in Shanghai. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews of the volunteer team leader, team members, and a local community health worker. Findings identified time constraints, limited language proficiency, and limited technical knowledge as the major challenges confronting the university volunteers. In order to overcome the challenges, they worked in close collaboration and used translingual and network strategies to facilitate prompt and high-quality crisis translation. Findings suggest that foreign language university students in local universities may serve as readily available multilingual resources and can be mobilized in prompt response to the grassroots multilingual needs of the local community in times of crisis. The paper ends with implications for measures and strategies to enhance effective emergency language service and crisis communication for global multilingual cities.

The importance of international engineering student exchange programs in today’s increasingly global marketplace is well accepted. This report describes aspects of the experience of the University of Waterloo with such a program which involves 26 institutions in 14 countries. A major element in a successful link is close collaboration between faculty coordinators at the two institutions.

This paper examines the recent development of a computer-assisted learning program—in Practice— at the School of Health Science, in the University of Wales Swansea. The project, which began in 2001, was developed in close collaboration with The Meningitis Trust, the aim being to produce a software package to increase nursing students’ knowledge of meningitis-related illnesses, and to enhance their decision-making and problem-solving skills by using lifelike scenarios. It incorporates two multimedia meningitis modules incorporating the use of text, film, and sound, in which students are presented with information about the illness (symptoms, treatment etc.), and are required to use their knowledge to make decisions at various key points. A general discussion of decision-making theories and CAL design principles is presented, which has provided a foundation for the main design aspects of the package. This is followed by an outline of how the program was created to promote students’ application of knowledge and their decision-making and problemsolving skills. Results from an evaluation questionnaire are presented. Consideration is also given as to how the program can be extended.DOI: 10.1080/0968776042000339808

This paper explores the material histories which influence contemporary medical education. Using two obstetric simulators found in the distinct teaching environments of the University of Development Studies in the north of Ghana and Maastricht University in the south of the Netherlands, this paper deconstructs the material conditions which shape current practice in order to emphasise the past practices that remain relevant, yet often invisible, in modern medicine. Building on conceptual ideas drawn from STS and the productive tensions which emerge from close collaboration between historians and anthropologists, we argue that the pull of past practice can be understood as a form of friction, where historical practices ‘stick’ to modern materialities. We argue that the labour required for the translation of material conditions across both time and space is expressly relevant for the ongoing use and future development of medical technologies.

This chapter outlines some of the benefits of collaborative research. It draws on the experience gained and the lessons learned from close to a decade’s collaboration between the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research at the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts. Close collaboration as part of the Hassanamesit Woods Project between Nipmuc archaeologist Dr. D. Rae Gould of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a member of the Hassanamisco Nipmuc, and the author has resulted in numerous ontological shifts. One of the more noteworthy has been a reassessment of the history of the seventeenth-century “Praying Indian” communities of colonial Massachusetts and Connecticut that have always been viewed as having been “established” by English missionary John Eliot. Such a view, long held by historians and archaeologists alike, was challenged as an outgrowth of collaborative dialogue resulting in a reassessment of notions of community and deeper connections to traditional Nipmuc lands. As a result, research examined deeper connections between the seventeenth-century community of Hassanamesit and earlier Nipmuc use of the area. Through a series of analytical studies, it was determined that cultural and spatial continuity could be demonstrated between recent Nipmuc communities and a deeper past.

The Physical Plant Division, as implementing arm of the University, provides support services which include implementation of infrastructure development plan on buildings and support facilities, roads and grounds, campus amenities among others. The study focused on the level of program implementation of the Physical Plant Division in terms of infrastructure development as perceived by the different groups of stakeholders and how it affects the delivery of quality education in rela­tion to instruction, research and extension. The study used the descriptive method conducted at Mindanao State University, Marawi City, Philippines, comprising 559 administrators, faculty, staff and students. The data were analysed and interpreted through weighted means, multiple linear regression analysis and F-test. The study found out that quality education in its trilogy function: instruction, research and extension, declined through the years as perceived by the respondents and supported by records. Perception level on program implementation of the Physical Plant Divi­sion differed, and found to be moderately effective due to lack of administrative support, continuous decline in budget allocation, and low political will to imple­ment the desired programs. The study concluded that there is a significant relation­ship between program implementation of the Physical Plant Division and quality of education of the University.Keywords: Quality and excellence, educational services, program implementation

6143 Background: The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) has offered oncology services via interactive tele-video (ITV) to patients in rural Kansas for over a decade. A KUMC oncologist utilizes ITV technology to connect with patients at Hays Medical Center (HMC), which is approximately 265 west of KUMC. The technology enables the oncologist to conduct a complete patient visit without being in physical proximity to the patient. To date, two cost-tracking studies have been conducted to determine expenses associated with the tele-oncology practice. A third study recently analyzed costs incurred during fiscal year 2005 (FY05). Methods: In order to determine the costs of the practice during FY05, HMC and KUMC expenses were monitored for oncology services rendered via telemedicine. An analysis revealed expenses common to a traditional oncology practice and additional expenses unique to a telemedicine practice. Administrative support staff salaries, the oncologist’s contract fees, and nursing staff salaries made up the majority of the traditional practice-related expenses. Costs unique to a tele-oncology practice were those associated with technology including expenses for telemedicine equipment, telecommunication charges, and technician time. Results: Expenses for the tele-oncology practice on the KUMC side totaled $22,848, with $7,331 attributed to technology-related costs and $15,517 attributed to practice-related costs. For HMC, $5,803 in technology-related costs and $30,430 in practice-related costs totaled $36,233. At 235 tele-oncology consults and a combined total expense of $59,081 between KUMC and HMC, the FY05 analysis resulted in an average cost of $251 per consult. When compared to prior studies, this shows a substantial reduction in costs related to the practice of telemedicine. Conclusions: The average cost of a tele-oncology visit in Kansas has consistently decreased significantly since the practice’s 1995 inception. Analyses have revealed that the costs of providing oncology services via telemedicine are closely tied to utilization, as the majority of the expenses are related to personnel rather than technology. Telemedicine has proven itself to be a cost-efficient alternative to offering regular outreach clinics. No significant financial relationships to disclose.
