Myracrodruon urundeuva, commonly known as black aroeira is a species regularly found in diverse Brazilian biomes, especially in the Caatinga. The species is a timber tree with great quality wood used extensively to construct buildings. The species has chemical components which confer high resistance and protection against pests, thus being used to prepare insecticides as well as cosmetics. Due to its diverse utilization and predatory exploration, the species has become an endangered species. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of organic compost and the size of the containers in the development of M. urundeuva seedlings. The experiment was performed in greenhouse in a factorial scheme 5 x 3, represented by 5 proportions of organic compost: soil (80, 60, 40, 20 and 0% of compost) and 3 container sizes (20x30, 18x22 and 12x18 cm), under a completely randomized statistical design with 5 replicates. The variables evaluated were: neck diameter; seedling height; number of leaves; length of the roots; dry weight of leaves; dry weight of stems; dry weight of the aerial portion; dry weight of roots; height/diameter ratio and Dickson’s quality index. There was significant interaction between treatments for all variables evaluated. When analyzing the containers individually or interacting with compost proportion, the container with volume of 1.335 dm³ was the most adequate for production of aroeira seedlings. Concerning compost proportion alone, the proportion of 40% proportioned the best results for all the evaluated parameters.

Carrot seeds exhibit irregular vigor due to the wide blooming period of the crop. Results from germination tests are insufficient to evaluate the physiological potential. Thus, vigor tests are used in combination with germination tests. The objective of this work was to evaluate the quality of carrot seeds from different umbel order and the electrical conductivity under different temperatures and imbibing periods. Carrot seeds from cultivar Brasilia were used to perform the experiments. Content of water, the first and the final score of the germination test, index of germination rate, and length of roots and of the aerial portion were determined in the initial characterization. The electrical conductivity test was completed with replicates containing 50 seeds, in 25 mL deionized water at 20, 25 and 30oC. Evaluations were performed with 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours of imbibing period. The experiment was accomplished under a completely random statistical design. The quality of carrot seeds varied according to the umbel order. Seeds of secondary umbels showed better physiological quality. The electrical conductivity test is efficient to evaluate the vigor of carrot seeds with 8 hours of imbibing period at 25°C.

ABSTRACT Okra, Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench, is a vegetable with annual fruit native to hot regions of Africa, well adapted to the conditions of the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil, where it is widely used by small farmers. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mineral and organic fertilization on the production and quality of okra fruits. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design, with three replicates and eleven treatments defined according to a Baconian matrix. Treatments consisted of doses of N (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1), P (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1) and K (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1), as well as absence and presence of organic compost (30 t ha-1). The following parameters were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, production of fruits plant-1, number of fruits plant-1, fruit length and diameter and fruit quality (pH, soluble solids, titratable acidity, vitamin C and electrical conductivity). The crop is demanding in terms of K and N fertilizations, with increments of 15.8 and 36% in the mean number and diameter of fruits, respectively. Organic fertilization did not influence the vegetative growth of okra, but was beneficial to the production of fruits with higher vitamin C content, 52% higher than the contents found in fruits produced without such input.

The study was intended to determine the growth response of the pepper plant steak due to an extended 3 hours of Tauge extracting with a concentration of 300 ml/l. The design used in this study is a completely random design with a single factory based pattern of P1 (1 hour), P2 (2 hours), P3 (3 hours), P4 (4 hours), P5 (5 hours). Variable observations in this study are the number of shoots (strands), length of shoots (cm2), number of leaves (strands), amount of roots (cm2), length of roots (cm2), fresh shoots (gram), shoots dry weights (gram), root fresh weights (gram), root dry weights (gram), root dry weights (gram). Studies indicate that extended snorting time of pepper on and Tauge extracting gives very real influence to the growth variable of sprouts (50,66%), root length (32,96%), leaves (58,88%), root length (45,14%), root weight (57,72%), shoots (71,43%), shoots dry weight (65,73%). Thus the treatment of Tauge extracts as one of the natural growth regulator plants in seeding with a concentration of 300 m/l water would be best submerged for 3 hours to speed up the growth and remove the roots to achieve the best quality of the steed growth.

Nitrogen was a key component for increasing yield and quality of vegetables like shallots. The growth and development of plants were influenced by nitrogen form. Common plants preferred nitrate for growth, but the enormity preference varies within plant species and other environmental factors. The purpose of this experiment was to study the effect of ammonium:nitrate ratio in sandy soil to growth and yield of shallot (Allium cepa L. Aggregatum group). The experiment had been conducted in August-October 2015 in the sandy land on Samas Beach, Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research was arranged in a Split-Plot design. The main plot was the source of nitrogen (NH4+; NO3-; NH4+: NO3- 1:1; NH4+: NO3- 1:2; and NH4+: NO3- 2:1) and the subplot was cultivars (Crok Kuning, Tiron, and Bima Brebes). Each subplot covered an area of 2.5 m² (2.5 m x 1 m) with three blocks as replications. Shallot bulbs were planted in sixth-row, spacing 20 cm between rows and 15 cm within rows. The dose was applied according to the recommendation of BPTP (urea 200 kg ha-1, ZA 250 kg ha-1, SP-36 150 kg ha-1, and KCl 150 kg ha-1) 144.5 kg N ha-1. Ammonium:nitrate ratio influenced shallot growth in sandy soil through number of leaves at maximum vegetative phase and its leaf area. The NH4+: NO3- 1:2 ratio gave the best result in dry weight of leaves following bulb dry weight than other ratio. Nevertheless, ammonium:nitrate ratio had no significant influence on bulb dry weight (ton ha-1).

ABSTRACT The use of mini-cuttings is an option for obtaining sweet potato propagules of excellent quality. The objective of this research was to evaluate the production and quality of sweet potato roots propagated by mini-cuttings in different types of trays and ages of seedlings. Six treatments, resulting from the factorial 2x3, were evaluated: two types of trays (162 and 200 cells, with 31 and 18 mL of substrate per cell, respectively) and three ages of seedlings (39, 46 and 53 days after placement of mini-cuttings in trays), in a randomized block design, with five replications. Seedlings characteristics, production and quality of roots were evaluated. Higher number and dry weight of leaves per seedling were observed in the tray with 162 cells than in trays with 200 cells. The younger seedlings (39 days) had a lower number of leaves, dry weight of leaves, stem, roots ant total (leaves + stem + roots) than seedlings of other ages. There was no difference in root production depending on the type of tray, regardless of the age of the seedlings. For the 162-cell tray, the age of the seedlings did not affect the production of roots. On the other hand, for the 200-cell tray, higher roots production was observed on seedlings 39 days age compared to seedlings with 53 days. No differences were observed among the roots of different treatments for titratable acidity, and levels of sucrose, reducing sugars ant total sugars. It is recommended to avoid old seedlings, that is, it is recommended to use seedlings with a maximum of 43 days after planting of mini-cuttings for trays with 200 cells, while for trays with 162 cells no difference in root production was observed with the different ages of the seedlings.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the initial growth of Bauhinia variegata L. when inoculated and fertilized with different proportions of organic compost. The experiment was performed in greenhouse in a completely random factorial (2 x 5) + 1 design, with 9 replicates, constituted by the presence or absence of inoculation, five proportions of organic compost:soil (0:100, 20:40, 40:60, 60:40 and 80:20; v/v) and one additional treatment with chemical fertilization without inoculation. Ninety days after sowing, the plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, radicular length, dry mass of the aerial portion, dry mass of roots, total dry mass, Dicksosn's quality index (IQD), contents of nitrogen and carbon and the C/N ratio of the dry mass of the aerial portion, were evaluated. The inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria stimulated growth in height, stem height/diameter ratio, dry mass of the aerial portion, dry mass of roots, total dry mass and the foliar contents of nitrogen and carbon in seedlings of B. variegata L. Seedlings grown using organic compost showed better development when compared to seedlings grown only in soil with or without chemical fertilization. Seedlings grown with formulated substrate at a proportion of 16:84 (organic compost:soil + inoculation) exhibited higher IQD, therefore, this constitutes the recommended proportion for production of B.variegata L. seedlings.

penurunan kualitas selama transportasi.
Agustus 2004. Percobaan disusun dalam rancangan petak terbagi (RPT)
dengan 3 ulangan. Petak utama (main plot) adalah 2 jenis setek nilam
yaitu: (1) setek berdaun dan (2) setek tidak berdaun. Anak petak (sub plot)
adalah lama penyimpanan setek yaitu: (1) setek langsung ditanam
(kontrol), (2) setek disimpan 1 hari, (3) setek disimpan 3 hari, (4)setek
disimpan 5 hari dan, (5) setek disimpan 7 hari. Pengamatan dilakukan
sejak tanaman berumur 2 minggu sampai tanaman berumur 8 minggu.
berdaun.
Kata kunci : Nilam, Pogostemon cablin Benth, bibit, setek berakar,
penyimpanan, pertumbuhan, Jawa Barat
ABSTRACT
Effect of storage periods of rooted cutting on the growth
of patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth)
Providing high quality of patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth)
seedlings is necessary to support the development of patchouli plants. In
the new developing area transportation become serious problems (high
cost transportation), therefore some alternative solution is reducing the
transportation cost without reducing the quality of the seedlings. Base on
the problems, this experiment was conducted. The objective of this
experiment was to study the effect of storage periods of rooted cuttings on
the growth of patchouli plant. The experiment was conducted in the green
house of Indonesian Spice and Medicinal Crops Research Institute
(ISMECRI), from April to August 2004. The experiment was arranged in
a split-plot design with 3 replications. The main plot was 2 kinds of cutting
there were: (1) leaf cutting and (2) non leaf cutting. The sub plot was 5
different storage periods, there were: (1) control (no storage), (2)1 day
storage, (3) 3 day storage, (4) 5 day storage, (5) 7 day storage. The
variables observed were plant growth (plant height, number of leaves and
number of shoots), dry weight of stems, leaves and roots. The results of
experiment indicated that after 7 day storage, rooted cuttings of patchouli
were still 100% viable. The growth of patchouli from leaf cutting was
significantly different from non leaf cutting. Patchouli plant from leaf
cutting produced higher plant height, number of leaves, number of shoots
and dry weight of plants compared to those of patchouli plants from non
leaf cuttings. Storage period significantly affected the height of plants
however it did not significantly affected the number of leaves, number of
shoots and dry weight of plants.
Key words: Pacthouli, Pogostemon cablin, seedlings, rooted cutting,
storage, growth, West JavE

High quality planting material is the basis for good strawberry yields. The productivity of strawberry mother plants depends on many factors, but there is little published work on the effects of type and initial size of mother plants on the quality of daughter plants. In the presented study, strawberry mother plants (cultivar ‘Elsanta’) were grown in an unheated tunnel in plastic pots filled with peat-based substrate (5 dm3). The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of type (fresh-dug plants and frigo) and initial size (A and A+ plants) of strawberry mother plants on selected parameters of daughter plants (crown diameter, fresh and dry weight as well as number and area of leaves). The study was carried out in 2006 and 2007. Strawberry mother plants were planted in the second decade of April and daughter plants were detached in the second decade of August. All measurements were performed on the second daughter plant on the mother plant runner. Statistical analysis showed that type of mother plants had a significant effect on number of leaves in daughter plants. Daughter plants obtained from mother plants established from fresh-dug plants had the highest number of leaves. The initial size of mother plants significantly influenced the fresh and dry weight of daughter plants. Smaller mother plants (“A-size”) produced daughter plants with higher fresh and dry weight. The results obtained in the second year of the study were affected by high incidence of powdery mildew.
