This article describes the implementation and achievements of the sakīnah family during the Covid-19 period. Both refer to the technical guidelines of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2011 regarding the criteria for the sakīnah family. This study uses sociological and al-maṣlaḥah approaches. The research location is in Konda District, Konawe Selatan Regency. The researchers obtained data from the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), sub-district government, village heads, community leaders, and the public. This study found that the criteria for the sakīnah family were irrelevant to apply. The reason is that the expectations of these criteria are too high, especially in the fields of economy and social status. In addition, the KUA officers did not implement the sakīnah family counselling properly. Thus, the criteria for the sakīnah family need to be simplified and adapted to the conditions and characteristics of each region.

This paper explores women’s participation in parliamentary elections in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan. Using various methods, it offers an interdisciplinary perspective on factors that affect the likelihood of women participating successfully in parliamentary elections. This study supports the general literature on the effects of gender quotas and proportional representation, but its results on other factors are mixed. The factor of financial resources is significant, though its impact has been reduced with the introduction of gender quotas, while other factors—such as social status—may not be particularly important. The public perception of a woman in politics is not the greatest obstacle to women’s representation, and a female candidate’s professional status may often be attractive to party leaders.

Why would people conform more to others with higher social positions? People may place higher confidence in the opinions of those who rank higher in the social hierarchy, or they may wish to make better impressions on people of higher social status. We investigated how individual preferences for novel stimuli are influenced by the preferences of others in the social hierarchy and whether anonymity affects such preference changes. After manipulation of their social rank, participants were asked to indicate how much they liked or disliked a series of images. Then, they were shown the rating given to each image by a partner (either inferior or superior in social rank) and were given a chance to adjust their ratings. The participants were more likely to change their preferences to match those of a superior partner in the public vs. private condition. The tendency to conform to the views of the superior partner was stronger among those with higher social dominance orientation (SDO) and those with greater fear of negative evaluation (FNE) by others. Altogether, the findings suggest that the motivation to make better impressions on people of higher social status can be the major driver of conformity to others with higher social positions.

This article draws on the public testimonies of North Koreans living in South Korea (t’albungmin) and analyzes the role that these narratives play in South Korean society as mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. North and South Korea technically remain at war, with South Korea claiming sovereignty over the entire Korean peninsula. While t’albungmin are eligible for South Korean citizenship, they describe feeling excluded from full social membership. Although some t’albungmin seek anonymity, this paper considers those who gain social status by speaking publicly about their lives and denouncing the North Korean regime. In so doing, they distance themselves from North Korea and align themselves with the “good” discourse of human rights. However, their actions reinforce a logic of exclusion, implying that t’albungmin who prefer anonymity are “sympathizers,” and consequently restricting their access to social benefits and resources. This case of conditional inclusion illuminates tensions that arise when a sovereignty claim entails the incorporation of people from an enemy state. It also highlights the carefully delineated boundaries of publicly acceptable behavior within which “suspect” citizens must remain as a condition for positive recognition.

Serving the public or the public by using information technology and website-based communication media is practiced by almost all sectors, including the government sector as well as the district level government. District governments that already have official websites include Kab.subang (subang.go.id), Kab.bandung Barat (bandungbaratkab.go.id), and Kab.cianjur (cianjurkab.go.id) which are the focus of this research. The existence of an official government website, it is necessary to measure the performance and quality of the website using the GTMetrix, WebPageTest, and WAVE test tools.  Based on the results of testing with GTMetrix, the official website of the Subang district government is in the slow category with a display time of 18.9s, while the official websites of the Cianjur regency and West Bandung regencies with a display time of 33.5s and 31.0s are in the very slow category. Based on the results of testing with WebPagetest, the official website of the Cianjur regency government has a good performance score with a display time of 20,015s compared to Subang district with a display time of 65,871s and Bandung Barat with a display time of 39,574s. Based on the results of testing with WAVE, the official website of the West Bandung district government has a slight error value with 9 errors compared to Subang district with 61 errors and Cianjur district with 168 errors. The paper discusses the African Centre for treatment and rehabilitation of torture victims (ACTV) which was established in Uganda in 1993. The ACTV is a nongovernmental organisation offering treatment to the victims of torture. Professional staff at the centre include a physiotherapist, clinical psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist and psychiatric nurses. Specialised medical services outside of these areas that may be required, are provided by outside specialists.Torture commonly involves both physical and psychological abuse and is often administered by individuals on behalf of an institution or organisation with the aim of punishing or intimidating a victim or attempting to obtain information from a victim. Physical torture may involve beatings, kickings, tyings, suspensions in forced positions, hard labour and other such physical abuse.Apart from offering treatment and rehabilitation services the ACTV aims to raise awareness in the public arena concerning the plight of torture victims through workshops and seminars conducted in hospitals, schools and other institutions. Services are carried out both at the centre and in the community where satellite centres have been established. Referrals to the ACTV come from a wide variety of sources including, hospitals, human rights institutions, community leaders and self-referral.From July to December 1997 the physiotherapist working at the centre conducted a survey of clients referred to the ACTV. During this period 309 people were referred to the centre; 45% male and 55% female. (See table below)In this survey approximately 90% of the clients were referred for physiotherapy and 10% were referred to other specialists. It was reported that 97% of the victims showed improvement following treatment although the criteria for this are not discussed. An emphasis regarding the respectful and ethical handling of clients is emphasised throughout the paper. For example, not pursuing a particular line of questioning should the client not want to answer a particular question; avoiding the use of equipment that may remind the client of their torture (eg. ropes and certain electrotherapy apparatus) and listening carefully to the client’s regarding their treatment.
