<p style="text-align: justify;">The research activity of the antioxidant and antibacterial esktrak methanol seaweed Sargussum duplicatum J. Agardh as well as its potential as an alternative natural preservative salted egg has been done. Seaweed extract S. duplicatum Jj. Agardh assayed phytochemistry and the content of total phenolic with variation of temperature. Metabolite secondary in seawed extract obtained through maseration using methanol solvent. The extract are partitioned, R1 and R2. R1 sample is a sample without treatment and sample R2 is a sample with 45 minutes for warming treatment in waterbath temperature to 100 °C. Phytochemical content in seawed of S. duplicatum J. Agardh are flavonoid dan steroid. Phytochemical content and phenolic total have positive correlation to antioxidant activity. Antioxidant activity with DPPH method yielded IC50 = 143.03 μg/mL (R1) and 357.95 μg/mL (R2). Antibacterial activity assay carried out trough diffusion method with SSA media (Salmonella-Shigella Agar). Inhibition value toward Salmonella is 1.120 mm and 1.15 mm with control is chloramphenicol. Salmonella sp.is pathogenic bacteria that presents in egg and causes decay on the egg. Discussion about antibacteria activity results of seawed extract of S. duplicatum J. This study focused on total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the leaves and stems ofPassiflora quadrangularis,P. maliformis, andP. edulisextracted using three solvents: petroleum ether, acetone, and methanol. The maximum extraction yields of antioxidant components from the leaves and stems were isolated using methanol extracts ofP. edulis(24.28%) andP. quadrangularis(9.76%), respectively. Among the leaf extracts, the methanol extract ofP. maliformishad the significantly highest TPC and the strongest antioxidant activity, whereas among the stem extracts, the methanol extract ofP. quadrangularisshowed the highest phenolic amount and possessed the strongest antioxidant activity. The antibacterial properties of thePassifloraspecies were tested using the disc diffusion method against 10 human pathogenic bacteria. The largest inhibition zone was observed for the methanol extract ofP. maliformisagainstB. subtilis. Generally, extracts from thePassifloraspecies exhibit distinct inhibition against Gram-positive but not Gram-negative bacteria. Based on the generated biplot, three clusters of bacteria were designated according to their performance towards the tested extracts. The present study revealed that methanol extracts of thePassifloracontain constituents with significant phenolic, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical uses.

Propolis is one of the natural products produced by kelulut bees and is still not widely used. The type of stingless bee that is the prima donna in the community is Heterotrigona itama. This study aims to determine the phytochemical content of the n-hexane fraction of Heterotrigona itama bee propolis collected from Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan. The n-hexane fraction was obtained from the methanol extract of H. itama propolis by the liquid-liquid partition method. After obtaining the n-hexane fraction, the research continued with a qualitative phytochemical test to identify the compound and determine total phenolic. Antibacterial activity was determined by the agar well diffusion method with a serial concentration in Escherichia coli bacteria. Qualitative phytochemical analysis in the form of color changes showed that the n-hexane fraction of H. itama propolis contained flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. Based on the results, the total phenolic content of the n-hexane fraction sample was 490 mgGAE/100 g. It caused the n-hexane fraction to have lower phenolic content than the methanol extract (792 mg GAE100 g). Furthermore, this result indicated that the non-polar fraction was not substantial enough to extracted phenolic compounds. It correlated to the antibacterial activity of the n-hexane fraction, which was very weak (2  mm ± 1.5) at  200µg/mL concentration.

Abstract The study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity, antioxidant, toxicity and phytochemical screening of the Red Propolis Alagoas. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by disk diffusion method. Determination of antioxidant activity was performed using the DPPH assay (1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), FTC (ferric thiocyanate) and determination of phenolic compounds by Follin method. Toxicity was performed by the method of Artemia salina and cytotoxicity by MTT method. The phytochemical screening for the detection of allelochemicals was performed. The ethanol extract of propolis of Alagoas showed significant results for antimicrobial activity, and inhibitory activity for Staphylococcus aureus and Candida krusei. The antioxidant activity of the FTC method was 80% to 108.3% hydrogen peroxide kidnapping, the DPPH method showed an EC50 3.97 mg/mL, the content of total phenolic compounds was determined by calibration curve gallic acid, resulting from 0.0005 mg/100 g of gallic acid equivalent. The extract was non-toxic by A. salina method. The propolis extract showed high activity with a higher percentage than 75% inhibition of tumor cells OVCAR-8, SF-295 and HCT116. Chemical constituents were observed as flavonones, xanthones, flavonols, and Chalcones Auronas, Catechins and leucoanthocyanidins. It is concluded that the extract can be tested is considered a potential source of bioactive metabolites.

Background : The treatment of some diseases caused by free radicals and pathogenic bacteria usually by using antioxidants and antibiotics. Due to excessive use of antibiotics and other environmental cues, some bacteria are now resistant to certain antibiotics or even to multiple antibiotics. Some Vibrio cholerae bacterial strains are multiresistant to many antibiotics.Objective : The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Brugueira gymnorrhiza stem extracts against pathogenic bacteria V. cholerae.Method : The B. gymnorrhiza stem was extracted by gradient maceration method. The DPPH method was used to determine the antioxidant activity and the disc diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial activities. The column chromatography method was used to fractionate the selective extract with the best activity. The LC-MS/MS method was used to identify the compound obtained from the fraction with the best antioxidant and antibacterial activity.Result : Ethyl acetate extract of B. gymnorrhiza stem had the best antibacterial activity with MIC and MBC values of 62.50 mg/L. Ethyl acetate extract also showed the best value of antioxidant activity as indicated by an IC50 value of 255.03 mg/L. The results of fractions test showed that fraction 3 had the best antibacterial and the best antioxidant activities with both the MIC and MBC values of 7.90 mg/L and IC50 value of 348.91 mg/L, respectively.Conclusion : Ethyl acetate extract of B. gymnorrhiza stem has good potential as antioxidant and antibacterial. The compound which is thought as antioxidant and antibacterial from Ethyl acetate extract is 2-Ethyl-4-methyl-1H-imidazole.

Background: Conventional food additives were associated with potential harm. Palm seeds are an interesting source of high-added value bioactive compounds, regarding their potential use in food industries. Aim: Date seeds extract (DSE) of Algerian Phoenix dactyliefra L. was studied for its phytochemical, antioxidant, and antibacterial activity and to identify its potential uses in foods. Material and methods: A total soluble solid of DSE (°Brix) was determined by refractometry. The total phenolic contents (TPCs) were determined according to the Folin-Cioclateu method and the total flavonoid and flavonols were also estimated with the colorimetric method. The DPPH method was used to determine the antioxidant activity of DSE. The IC50 values were also calculated and the antioxidant activity index (AAI) was determined. The agar well diffusion method was employed for the antibacterial activity of the aqueous DSE against various pathogens. Results: Moisture, ash, and fat contents (%) determined were 11.06, 1.33, and 7.06, respectively. The physicochemical analysis of the extract showed a pH value of 4.67, titratable acidity value of 0.64 citric acid/100 g, °Brix value = 3%, sugars values of 0.12, 0.47, and 0.35 g/L for reducing sugar, total sugar, and sucrose, respectively. The determination of phenolic compounds was carried out on three groups, namely total phenols = 229.67 mg GAEq/g, flavonoids = 201.12 mg QEq/g, and flavonols = 173.03 mg QEq/g, respectively. The DSE demonstrates to be effective as an antioxidant “in vitro” and showed a strong antibacterial activity with different inhibition levels, depending on the bacterial strains. Conclusion: The current investigations present knowledge about the possible role of palm industry by-products as a novel perspective for the development of new foods. We suggest that date seeds can be exploited in some food applications utilizing their high levels of bioactive molecules. Capsella bursa-pastoris has been analyzed for nutritional composition, antioxidant and cytotoxic potential to reveal its nutraceutical and medicinal importance. Methanol and chloroform extracts were used for preliminary phytochemical analysis following quantification of total phenolic, flavonoid, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids. Antioxidant activity was determined by using DPPH, phosphomolybdate, and reducing power assays. Proximate and elemental analysis was performed by using standard methods. Brine shrimp larvae assay was used to determine the cytotoxicity of chloroform and methanol extract. Chloroform and methanol extract of the plant indicated the presence of 1.56×10-4 mg g-1 and 1.28×10-4 mg g-1 phenolic, respectively. The plant was found to have high carbohydrate and protein contents. The high-level mineral composition was determined containing Potassium, Sodium, Iron, Zinc, and Copper. Results of antioxidant activity by the DPPH method indicated IC50 of 235.37 μg ml-1 and 552.01 μg ml-1 for chloroform and methanol extract, respectively. Brine shrimp larvae assay was used to determine the cytotoxicity resulting LD50 of 246.4469 μg ml-1 and 169.85 μg ml-1 of methanol and chloroform extract, respectively. The study inferred that C. bursa-pastoris could serve as a good source of protein and energy as well as micronutrients in the form of a leafy vegetable for human consumption.

Dendrophthoe falcata is a hemiparasitic plant that has been used in traditional medicine.The study was conducted to identify the total phenolic and flavonoid compounds, to test antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract stems of D. falcata parasite on Melia azedarach host tree. The dry powder stems of D. falcata was extracted with ethanol. The ethanol extract was subsequently partitioned successively using n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate. Each fraction was analyzed by a quantitative phenolic and flavonoid content with spectrophotometer method, and tested as antioxidant and antimicrobial activites. Antioxidant activity was performed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhidrazil (DPPH) method, while antimicrobial assay used pathogenic bacteria by disk-diffusion method. The results concluded that the stem of D. falcata plant showed a high content of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, very high antioxidant and moderate antimicrobial activities. It was also found that stems of D. falcata contain potential phenolic compounds that can be used as natural antioxidants and the treatment of various infections caused by microbes.

Muntingia calabura has a high phytochemical content, especially the phenolic group that can act as antioxidant. In Malaysia country, this M. calabura also known as ‘kerukup siam’ or ‘Ceri Kampung’ and it belongs to Muntingiaceae family. This research was conducted to determine the potential of antioxidant activity application of cherry leaves (M. calabura) from various solvent extracts (methanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane). The phytochemical contents were screening by using the established standard procedure. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteau colorimetric method, while the antioxidant activity was carried out using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Phytochemical screening on the leaves part methanolic extracts revealed that the presence of various biochemicals like flavonoids, phenols, steroids, triterpenes, tannins, reducing sugars, and saponins except the alkaloids. Among the three extracts, the methanol leaf extract gave the highest content of phenolics (8.20 mg GAE/g extract). Analyses of antioxidant activity with DPPH method showed that cherry leaf methanolic extracts produced high antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 167.70 mg/mL. The present study confirms that the presence of various phytochemicals which shows good antioxidant activity of M. calabura leaves. Therefore, it has the potential as a therapeutic antioxidant agent and can be used in cosmeceutical and food products.

Objective: Natuna sponge is a marine animal that contains a wide range of secondary metabolites that can be utilized in the field of pharmacy. The research aims to test the phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of the Natuna methanol marine sponge extract. Sample extraction is done by the maceration method with methanol solvent. Methods: Phytochemical tests include alkaloid testing, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, and tannins. Test antioxidant activity using the immersion DPPH method (1.1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydroxyl) measured absorption at a wavelength of 517 nm. Results: The phytochemical test results showing the sponge of Natuna contain secondary metabolites including alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, and tannins. Conclusion: This Natuna sponge methanol extract has an antioxidant activity that is very strong with an IC50 value of 52.91 ppm, and the comparator used is Vitamin C with an IC50 value of 43,51 ppm.
