: Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem. (Araliaceae), which is the key point of this review, has served in the treatment of diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis in traditional folk medicine in East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Russia), also is a precious wild vegetable. This review aims to overview current research results related to Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem., with particular emphasis on chemical composition and biological activity. Search the existing research through the database, summarize and find that it has a certain therapeutic effect on a variety of chronic diseases such as: malignant tumors, cardiocerebrovascular disease, diabetes, and its complications, etc. Additionally, it is loved by people in East Asia due to its rich taste as a wild vegetable. In conclusion, it offers the possibility of developing innovative pharmacological drugs as well as health food. Thus, it is critical to prove its validity and clarify the exact action mechanisms that promote it as a pharmacological drug. This review is expected to provide direction for future research.

Virola is the largest genus of Myristicaceae in America, comprising about 60 species of medium-sized trees geographically spread from Mexico to southern Brazil. The plant species of this genus have been widely used in folk medicine for the treatment of several ailments, such as rheumatic pain, bronchial asthma, tumors in the joints, intestinal worms, halitosis, ulcers, and multiple infections, due to their pharmacological activity. This review presents an updated and comprehensive summary of Virola species, particularly their ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, and biological activity, to support the safe medicinal use of plant extracts and provide guidance for future research. The Virola spp.’s ethnopharmacology, including in the treatment of stomach pain and gastric ulcers, as well as antimicrobial and tryponosomicidal activities, is attributable to the presence of a myriad of phytoconstituents, such as flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, lignans, arylalkanones, and sitosterol. Hence, such species yield potential leads or molecular scaffolds for the development of new pharmaceutical formulations, encouraging the elucidation of not-yet-understood action mechanisms and ascertaining their safety for humans.

The Lamiaceae is undoubtedly an important plant family, having a rich history of use that spans the globe with many species being used in folk medicine and modern industries alike. Their ability to produce aromatic volatile oils has made them valuable sources of materials in the cosmetic, culinary, and pharmaceutical industries. A thorough account of the taxonomic diversity, chemistry and ethnobotany is lacking for southern African Lamiaceae, which feature some of the region’s most notable medicinal and edible plant species. We provide a comprehensive insight into the Lamiaceae flora of southern Africa, comprising 297 species in 42 genera, 105 of which are endemic to the subcontinent. We further explore the medicinal and traditional uses, where all genera with documented uses are covered for the region. A broad review of the chemistry of southern African Lamiaceae is presented, noting that only 101 species (34%) have been investigated chemically (either their volatile oils or phytochemical characterization of secondary metabolites), thus presenting many and varied opportunities for further studies. The main aim of our study was therefore to present an up-to-date account of the botany, chemistry and traditional uses of the family in southern Africa, and to identify obvious knowledge gaps.

In the present research we argue that avatars, as identity containers, can mirror people’s self-concepts. Research in cultural psychology suggests that East Asians tend to be more tolerant of contradictions and that they more easily adjust their self-concepts in accordance with changing contexts compared to North Americans (see Heine 2001). We therefore assume that preferred forms of avatars among East Asians and North Americans are different because of this self-concept variability across cultures. We conducted a quasi-experiment to explore how people in the two cultures differently evaluate two forms of avatars, human-like and cartoon-like avatars, in terms of likeability and preference. We found that East Asians rated cartoon-like avatars more favourably than North Americans. Moreover, compared to North Americans, East Asians preferred cartoon-like avatars to human-like avatars for their hypothetical avatars to play games. We conclude by discussing implications for future research.

Background: Cordia myxa L. (CM) is a valuable ethnomedicinal plant from Boraginaceae family. Traditionally, CM parts especially fruits and leaves are used in chest and urinary tract infections, diarrhoea, dysentery, tuberculosis, liver and spleen disorders, chronic fever, malaria etc. Objective: Despite of known importance and uses, CM has gained relatively less attention of researchers and concise reviews revealing the medicinal potential of CM are scanty. The present review summarizes the chemical constituents and biological activities of CM and aims to stimulate future research to develop it as a functional health food. Results: Analysis of literature on CM showed that its fruits are a rich source of nutrients and are frequently employed in wide ailments such as urinary and respiratory tract infections, chronic fever, liver disorders, asthma, used as anthelmintic, diuretic, expectorant and purgative. Scientific studies have shown the antidiabetic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antioxidant, antiplasmodial, hepatoprotective, hypotensive, antiulcer and antimicrobial activities of CM. More than 45 compounds belonging to carbohydrates, steroids, carotenoids, phenols, flavonoids and alkaloids have been reported from various parts of CM. Conclusion: Systematic preclinical studies support the traditional claims of CM. The analysis of available literature showed that CM could be developed as a drug. Further, studies such as detailed pharmacological and toxicological evaluation, isolation of bioactive compounds, quantitative phytochemistry and structure activity relationship are scanty and thus, crucial to be addressed for uplifting the scientific value of this revered medicinal plant.

Abstract Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in China, and the number of new cases and the number of cases of deaths has increased annually. However, its pathogenesis is still unclear. Wnt7a is a member of the wingless-type MMTV integration site family, and it plays an important role in tumorigenesis and development by controlling cell proliferation and differentiation as a secreted glycoprotein. Whether Wnt7a has the properties of an oncogene or not is an important focus for future research as this target has diverse roles in different tumors.Methods: Wnt7a protein expression in normal colorectal mucosa and colorectal tumors was detected via immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the associations between Wnt7a staining score and various clinical parameters.Results: Wnt7a was strongly expressed in colorectal cancer tissues but weakly expressed in adjacent normal mucosa and colorectal adenomas. The level of Wnt7a expression was correlated with lymph node involvement (P < 0.001), Duke stage (P < 0.001), and cell differentiation (P < 0.001). Knockdown of Wnt7a inhibits proliferation of colon cancer cells and inhibits the ability of both colon cancer cell lines to migrate.Conclusions: Collectively, our results present evidence that Wnt7a is associated with an unfavorable prognosis of colorectal cancer.

Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem., known as Japanese angelica tree, is a deciduous shrub belonging to the Araliaceae, which is native to East Asia. The young shoots have long been used in various dishes in East Asia. Commercial cultivation of this shrub, especially in polytunnels, is expanding in Korea. Several diseases including Sclerotinia rot have been known to be present on this plant (1,2). In early September 2007, leaf spot symptoms were first observed on several trees in Hongcheon, Korea. Microscopic observations revealed that the leaf spots were associated with an Ascochyta sp. Further surveys of the Ascochyta leaf spot showed the occurrence of the disease in approximately 5 to 10% of the trees in the 3 ha of commercial fields surveyed in Chuncheon, Gapyeong, Inje, and Jinju, Korea. Initial symptoms on leaves were circular to irregular, brown to dark brown, becoming zonate, and finally fading to grayish brown in the center with a yellow halo. Representative samples were deposited in the herbarium of Korea University. Conidiomata on leaf lesions were pycnidial, amphigenous, but mostly epiphyllous, immersed or semi-immersed in host tissue, light brown to olive brown, and 60 to 200 μm in diameter. Ostioles were papillate, 20 to 35 μm wide, and surrounded by a ring of darker cells. Conidia were hyaline, smooth, cylindrical to clavate, straight to mildly curved, slightly constricted at the septa, medianly one-septate, sometimes aseptate, 8 to 16 × 2.5 to 3.5 μm, and contained small oil drops. These morphological characteristics were consistent with the previous reports of Ascochyta marginata J.J. Davis (3,4). A monoconidial isolate was cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates and accessioned in the Korea Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession KACC43082). The conidia were readily formed on PDA. Inoculum for the pathogenicity tests was prepared by harvesting conidia from 30-day-old cultures of KACC43082 and a conidial suspension (approximately 2 × 106 conidia/ml) was sprayed onto leaves of three healthy seedlings. Three noninoculated seedlings served as controls. Inoculated and noninoculated plants were covered with plastic bags for 48 h in a glasshouse. After 7 days, typical leaf spot symptoms started to develop on the leaves of the inoculated plants. The fungus, A. marginata, was reisolated from those lesions, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on control plants. Previously, the disease was reported in Japan (4) and China (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. marginata on Japanese angelica trees in Korea. According to our field observations in Korea, the Ascochyta leaf spot mostly occurred on plants growing in a humid environment, especially during the rainy season. The seedlings as well as the trees growing in sunny, well-ventilated plots were nearly free from this disease. This article reviews only those empirical works that report results on the influence of sociodemographic factors on food consumption. It highlights those recent papers that can be helpful to the interested reader as a base from which to explore further aspects of demographics and food consumption. Reviewed empirical studies analyze the influence of demographics on food consumption following the two different approaches. This article presents the main demographic trends in developed countries. It gathers empirical evidence about the effect of demographic factors on food consumers' preferences for different food attributes, classified for pedagogical purposes in the following categories: ethics (organics, fair trade, and animal welfare), food safety and health (food safety, healthy diets, genetic modification, and irradiation), local and typical produce, ethnicity, and convenience. Finally, it concludes with some remarks and comments about emerging trends for future research.

The introduction to this anthology connects a diverse collection of essays that examine the 1940s as the critical decade in the United States’ ascendance in the Pacific Rim. Following the end of World War II, the United States assumed the hegemonic role in the region when Japan’s defeat created military and political vacuums in the region. It is in this context that this anthology stands not only as a précis of current scholarship but also as a prospectus for future research. The contributors’ chapters eschew the traditional focus on military operations that has dominated the historiography of 1940s in the Pacific Basin and East Asia. Instead, the contributors venture into areas of race, gender, technology, culture, media, diplomacy, and institutions, all of which add nuance and clarity to the existing literature of World War II and the early Cold War.

Diabetes is an endocrine system disease characterized by high morbidity, high prevalence, and high mortality. Although the traditional medicine for treating diabetes has a good effect, its side effects are also large. Traditional Chinese medicine has also achieved good therapeutic effects in the treatment of diabetes, and the side effects of Chinese medicine are small. Coix is a medicinal and edible plant. It is used as food and medicine alone or in combination with other herbs in the early days. Its seeds have become one of the most popular Chinese herbal medicines. The coixan was extracted from Coix seed, and it was administered to diabetic mice. After five weeks of treatment, it was found to have some role in hypoglycemic. This study provides a good application prospect for Chinese medicine treatment of diabetes.
