Introduction: Knowledge about HIV/AIDS is essential for facilitating safer sexual behaviour hence, it is important in controlling HIV. Therefore, in the absence of a cure for the pandemic, adequate knowledge about the virus remains the backbone of prevention efforts. Objective: To assess the knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS among undergraduate students at a rural university in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive quantitative survey-based study was conducted at a rural-based university in South Africa. Stratified random sampling was used to select 345 students. A self-administered questionnaire composed of 26 questions was utilised to gather data and the data were analysed using SPSS version 26. Multiple logistic regression and chi-square tests [χ2] were employed to determine the association between HIV/AIDS knowledge and demographic variables. Results: The overall HIV/AIDS knowledge score of students shows that (74)21% had a poor level of knowledge, (126)37% had average knowledge, and (145)42% had adequate knowledge. There was no significant difference between male and female students regarding their knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Factors, such as age, level of study, the field of study, and religion, were not significantly associated with HIV/AIDS knowledge. However, the race was significantly associated with knowledge with coloureds and mixed races, almost six times less knowledgeable than blacks. Conclusion: In conclusion, students had inadequate knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Misconceptions about HIV/AIDS facts, transmission routes, and prevention aspects were also prevalent among students. The present study accentuates the need for providing students with more HIV/AIDS education to fill HIV knowledge gaps and misconceptions.

Background: Rohingyas living in refugee camps of Bangladesh have been identified as a high-risk group for HIV transmission. This study aimed to assess gender differences in risk perception towards HIV/AIDS among Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar. Methods: A cross-sectional design was adopted to assess the level of risk perception towards HIV/AIDS. This analysis utilizes data from a survey of 130 Rohingya people through face-to-face interviews utilizing a 28-item HIV-Knowledge Questionnaire. A systematic sampling technique was used to accomplish data collection survey. Analyzing was done by SPSS 25. Results: Only 41.8% of males and 58.2% of females had a good knowledge score (8 out of 11 items) regarding the transmission of HIV. Knowledge is significantly associated with female gender (χ2 = 8.927, p < 0.005). Gender differences were also significantly associated with the perceived risk of contracting HIV/AIDS in the future (p < 0.001). When rank averages were investigated, perceived risk of contracting HIV/AIDS score of the female participants (mean rank = 76.71) appeared to be higher compared to the score of male participants (mean rank = 54.29). Conclusion: Female Rohingyas perceive a higher risk of contracting HIV/AIDS than male Rohingyas. Programs should address harmful gender norms, HIV testing and education emphasizing the risks involved in transactional sex within the camps.

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge, awareness and the attitude of dental students towards HIV/AIDS patients and to know whether knowledge has any influence on the attitude and willingness to treat HIV/AIDS patients.Methods: A self administered structured questionnaire consisting of 19 questions on knowledge, attitude and awareness about HIV/AIDS was distributed among 100 students randomly belonging to third year, final year and intern students of saveetha dental college, saveetha university, chennai. The data extracted were tabulated, statistically analyzed using SPSS Version 20.0 and results obtained.Results: The results revealed that many of the respondents demonstrated a good level of knowledge. The total mean knowledge score was 73% (good knowledge).There was a statistically significant difference of knowledge levels among the third year, final year students and the interns. The overall mean attitude score was 62.7% (negative attitude). There was no statistically significant difference of attitude among the three groups.Conclusion: Majority of dental students in our study have good level of knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS. Final year students have the highest level of knowledge and third year students have minimum level of knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS. Irrespective of the year of study, majority of the students showed a negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS patients and only a few among the interns showed a positive approach towards treating HIV patients. Hence these findings imply that there is a need to improve educational methods to more clearly address misconceptions and attitudes towards the disease.Keywords:HIV/AIDS, knowledge, attitude, dental students

Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge of undergraduate students of MAHSA University on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire among 350 local undergraduate students recruited by convenience sampling. The survey was conducted in English and consisted of questions on demographic data and 14 questions on knowledge toward HPV vaccination. Verbal consent was obtained from the participants beforehand, and their participation was voluntary and anonymous.Results: The participants have scored below average (6.09±3.39) for knowledge on HPV vaccines with a significant difference in terms of age, gender, and program of the study. Students from medicine, dentistry, and biomedical science tend to have better mean knowledge score (7.39±2.99) with 25% scored 10 and above. The non-health-care students showed insignificant lower mean knowledge score of 4.17±2.06, respectively.Conclusion: This study has demonstrated moderate level HPV vaccine knowledge toward HPV vaccination among university students with majority posed background of health-related knowledge.

Abstract Objectives To assess parents’ perceptions about amblyopia and its causes, symptoms, risk factors, treatments, and the importance of follow-up and to evaluate their awareness regarding the consequences and critical complications. Results Parents or their companions (n = 401) were surveyed, and 52.9% were mothers, 81.8% of mothers and 85.7% of fathers were highly educated (diploma, college or university degree), and 58 (14.5%) had a child who was afflicted with amblyopia. The knowledge subscale (nine items) showed acceptable reliability. Twenty percent of the participants declared having adequate knowledge about amblyopia, but assessment by item showed low percentages of an adequate knowledge level, ranging from 0% for amblyopia causes, 35.9% for definition, and 59.9% for whether amblyopia is a hereditary disease. Thus, the rate of adequate knowledge (Knowledge Score ≥ 8) was 25.9%, and was associated with parents’ nationality (p < 0.05) and self-declared knowledge about amblyopia (p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed among respondents who had a child with amblyopia. There was a lack of knowledge about basic information and different aspects of the disease, which emphasized the relevance of school-based screening programs and adequate use of trustworthy internet resources using easily understood medical information.

Since it was first discovered HIV / AIDS has became a very serious global challenge. Indonesia is one of the countries that have a high percentage of people living with HIV / AIDS (PLWHA). A quarter of the total cases of HIV / AIDS in Indonesia are in the adolescences, range of 15-24 years, where most of the undergraduate students (S1) are in this vulnerable age group. Adolescence is a developmental stage that being marked by a great curiosity about the problem of sexuality. This great curiosity is usually not accompanied by adequate knowledge about the issue of sexuality. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge about HIV / AIDS and sexual behavior of undergraduate students in Makassar City. The research method that has been used was cross-sectional, using stratified random sampling method to determine the research sample. There are 536 respondents from 3 universities in Makassar City. The results of this study found that the level of knowledge of students about HIV / AIDS was good at 75.4% (404 respondents) and 24.6% (132 respondents) were poorly informed. Students with no-risk sexual behavior were 346 respondents (64.6%) and 190 respondents were at risk (35.4). Bivariate test results found there was no relationship between knowledge about HIV / AIDS with sexual behavior of undergraduate students with p value 0.155. From this study it can be concluded that knowledge about HIV / AIDS does not affect the sexual behavior of undergraduate students in Makassar City. It is important to look at other factors that might influence undergraduate student sexual behavior.

Objective: This study aimed to determine HIV/AIDS knowledge level, attitudes toward individuals living with HIV/AIDS and to explore the relationship between HIV/AIDS knowledge and attitudes among African American undergraduates in Jackson, Mississippi. Methods:  A cross-sectional method was used in this study. A total of 400 students were randomly selected from Jackson State University undergraduate students. Data were collected by using a self-administered questionnaire on HIV/AIDS knowledge and their attitudes toward individuals living with HIV and AIDS. Results: Most of the students (96.5%) had good knowledge about HIV/AIDS, while some students had some misconceptions about HIV infection transmission. There was no significant difference between male and female students on HIV/AIDS knowledge in this study (χ2 = 3.05; P = 0.08). Most of the study participants (87.8%) showed positive attitudes toward individuals living with HIV/AIDS. However, there were some negative attitudes toward individuals living with HIV/AIDS among participants of this study. Male participants expressed more negative attitudes compared to female participants (19.1% vs. 8.5%, χ2 = 9.6; P < 0.002). HIV/AIDS knowledge was significantly associated with positive attitudes toward people living with the disease (p= 0.019, Pearson’s χ2 = 7.431). Conclusions:  In general, we concluded that most students (96.5%) in this study demonstrated high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge and positive attitudes (87.8%). There was an association between knowledge of the disease and positive attitudes toward HIV/AIDS patients. However, there were HIV/AIDS knowledge gaps, misconceptions, and intolerant attitudes toward HIV positive patients also identified in this study. Hence, this study calls for more robust and age-appropriate HIV/AIDS awareness education programs geared towards reducing the impacts of negative attitudes toward individuals living with the disease, eliminating the gaps in HIV/AIDS knowledge and misconceptions identified in this study.

INTRODUCTION Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder with a very high prevalence. Adequate knowledge about diabetes mellitus is essential for medical students as they are future frontline warriors for its management. In the present study, we have attempted to assess the knowledge of medical students related to various aspects of DM. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 445 medical students studying in the Universal College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Bhairahawa, Nepal were included. A total of 20 self-designed questionnaires regarding DM were used as a study tool. Each question was allocated a score of one making 20 the highest possible score. The students who scored 13 (65%) or more were regarded as having good knowledge, and those scoring below 13 were considered as having poor knowledge related to DM. Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 16 was used for data analysis. RESULTS Preclinical students were 309 (69.4%) and 136 (30.6%) clinical students. The mean knowledge score of the total participants were 13.54 ±3.68.  The clinical students (16.23 ±2.26) were found to have better knowledge about DM than the preclinical students (12.36 ±3.56). Year wise evaluation showed that, on average, all except first-year students had good knowledge regarding DM, with the final year students having highest mean score (18.80 ±2.29). No significant difference in the knowledge was found between MBBS and BDS students. CONCLUSION The majority of the medical students had good basic knowledge regarding DM. Clinical students had significantly higher knowledge in comparison to preclinical students.

Background: The HIV epidemic poses significant challenges to the healthcare providers including Physiotherapists. The study aimed at investigating the extent to which Physiotherapy College students know about human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) transmission, infection and prevention, and the transfer of such knowledge to sexual behavior change & and to know whether knowledge has any influence on the attitude and willingness to treat HIV/AIDS patients.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out on 217 physiotherapy students studying at the Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Physiotherapy, Kalkaji, New Delhi, India. The students completed a predesigned self-administered questionnaire assessing the knowledge, attitude and willingness to treat HIV/AIDS patients. The data were analyzed using ANOVA test (all the results are calculated at 1% level of significance) and Pearson correlation test.Results: The total mean knowledge score was 73.23% (good knowledge). There was a significant difference in knowledge among the Fourth-year & first-year students, which was found to be statistically significant (P<0.001%). The study showed that the overall mean attitude score was 62.83% (negative attitude). There was no significant difference in the attitude of the students among the five groups (P>0.001%). Karl Pearson correlation test showed no significant correlation between the knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the attitude of students towards HIV/AIDS patients (P>0.01%).Conclusions: The findings suggest that although the students had adequate knowledge about HIV/AIDS, their attitude towards this group of people was negative. From the study, fear of HIV contagion was observed as a major reason for the negative attitude of students towards HIV/AIDS patients.

The challenges of caring for people living with HIV (PLWH) in a low-resource setting has had a negative impact on the nursing profession, resulting in a shortage of skilled nurses. In response to this shortage and perceived negative impact, we conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study to describe the level of knowledge and psychosocial wellbeing of nurses caring for PLWH at a regional hospital in Limpopo Province, South Africa. A total of 233 nurses, the majority being female, participated and were stratified into professional nurses (n =108), enrolled nurses (n = 58) and enrolled nursing auxiliaries (n = 66). Data were collected using HIV/AIDS knowledge questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory; AIDS Impact Scale and Beck's Depression Inventory. The total knowledge score obtained by all the participants ranged from 2 to 16, with an average of 12.93 (SD = 1.92) on HIV/AIDS knowledge. Depersonalization (D) (83.7%) and emotional exhaustion (EE) (53.2%) were reported among participating nurses caring for PLWH. Burnout was higher among professional nurses as compared to both enrolled nurses and enrolled nursing auxiliaries. There was a moderate negative significant correlation between HIV knowledge with the nurses' emotional exhaustion (r = 0.592), depression (r = 0.584) and stigma and discrimination (r = 0.637). A moderate to high level of burnout was evident among all levels of nurses. These findings lead to the recommendations for support of nurses caring for PLWH that include structured nursing educational support, organisational support with respect to employee wellness programmes that address depression and work burnout, as well as social support. The provision of these support mechanisms has the potential of creating a positive practice environment for nurses in the Vhembe District of the Limpopo Province in particular, and South Africa in general, and in improved care for PLWH.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and awareness regarding cervical cancer and its prevention among nurses working in different hospitals of Quetta, Pakistan. Methodology: The cross sectional, descriptive study was conducted by using structured questionnaire in different hospitals of Quetta from January to September 2016. Convenient sampling technique was applied by targeting all the nurses working in different hospitals of Quetta city. Study questionnaire was developed and tested for validity and reliability. Descriptive and inferential statistics (Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis tests, p<0.05) were used to assess the significance among study variables and were performed by using IBM SPSS v.20. Results: Out of 415 distributed questionnaires 324 were returned (response rate of 78%). The mean Age of respondents was 28.18 ±9.5 years. Majority (n=127, 43.3%) of participants were interns and had no or less than one year of experience (n=128, 43.7%) with negative family history of any cancer (n=275, 93.9%). Mean knowledge score was 18.52±4.84with majority (n=258, 88.1%) had adequate knowledge regarding cervical cancer. Respondent sage, current area of practice, qualification, Institute of degree and past family history were contributing factors (p > 0.05) in adequate knowledge in this study. The results also reviled that not only 68.3% (n=200) and 65.5% (n=192) respondents knew that cervical cancer is vaccine preventable and availability of the vaccine for it. Conclusions: Nurses working in different hospitals of Quetta city had better understanding of the disease cervical cancer and its prevention. Yet many of the respondent are not aware of it vaccine and its availability.
