Introduction: Herein we report the green synthesis and characterization of silverreduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (Ag-rGO) using Acacia nilotica gum for the first time. Experimental: We demonstrate the Hg2+ ions sensing ability of the Ag-rGO nanocomposites form aqueous medium. The developed colorimetric sensor method is simple, fast and selective for the detection of Hg2+ ions in aqueous media in presence of other associated ions. A significant color change was noticed with naked eye upon Hg2+ addition. The color change was not observed for cations including Sr2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe2+, Ba2+ and Mn2+indicating that only Hg2+ shows a strong interaction with Ag-rGO nanocomposites. Under the most suitable condition, the calibration plot (A0-A) against concentration of Hg2+ was linear in the range of 0.1-1.0 ppm with a correlation coefficient (R2) value 0.9998. Results & Conclusion The concentration of Hg2+ was quantitatively determined with the Limit of Detection (LOD) of 0.85 ppm. Also, this method shows excellent selectivity towards Hg2+ over nine other cations tested. Moreover, the method offers a new cost effective, rapid and simple approach for the detection of Hg2+ in water samples.

Azoquinoline based sensor AZQ was designed and synthesized as a new molecular ion sensor containing an azo group in its structure. The structural characterization of AZQ was carried out using FTIR, NMR, mass, and elemental analysis. Then, the interaction of AZQ with anions was observed visually and UV–vis measurements were made in EtOH/H2O (1:1, v/v) solvent mixture. As a result of this investigation, it was determined that AZQ is a fast and highly selective sensor for CN− ions. The solution colour of AZQ changed from light yellow to orange only in the presence of CN− ions. The limit of detection of AZQ was calculated as 2.6 μmol/L from anion titration experiments. Also, to identify the interaction mechanism of AZQ with CN− ions, 1H NMR spectra of AZQ in the presence of CN− anions were recorded and the structure was proposed for AZQ-CN− host–guest complex.

Abstract. In this study the charging efficiency of a radioactive and a non-radioactive plasma neutralizer (Gilbert Mark I plasma charger) have been investigated at various aerosol flow rates. The results were compared to classic theoretical approaches. In addition, the chemical composition and electrical mobilities of the charger ions have been examined using an atmospheric pressure interface – time-of-flight mass spectrometer (APi-TOF MS). A comparison of the different neutralization methods revealed an increased charging efficiency for negatively charged particles using the non-radioactive plasma charger with nitrogen as working gas. The mobility and mass spectrometric measurements show that the generated neutralizer ions are of the same mobilities and composition independent of the charging mechanism. It was the first time that the Gilbert Mark I plasma charger was characterized in comparison to the standard TSI X-Ray (TSI Inc, Model 3088) and a radioactive americium neutralizer. We observed that the plasma charger with nitrogen as working gas can enhance the charging probability for sub-10 nm particles. Consequently, the limit of detection of differential or scanning mobility particle sizers can be increased down towards to smaller sizes with the Gilbert Mark I plasma charger.

Oat stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. avenae (Pga), is one of the most devastating diseases of oat. The most cost-effective and eco-friendly strategy to control this disease is the use of resistant cultivars. However, P. graminis f. sp. avenae can overcome the resistance of cultivars by rapidly changing its virulence. Thus, information on the virulence of P. graminis f. sp. avenae populations and resistance of cultivars is critical to control the disease. The current study was conducted to monitor the virulence composition and dynamics in the P. graminis f. sp. avenae population in China and to evaluate resistance of oat cultivars. Oat leaves naturally infected by P. graminis f. sp. avenae were collected during 2018 and 2019 and 159 isolates were derived from single uredinia. The isolates were tested on 12 international differential lines, and eight races, TJJ, TBD, TJB, TJD, TJL, TJN, TGD, and TKN, were identified for the first time in China. The predominant race was TJD, virulent against Pg1, Pg2, Pg3, Pg4, Pg8, Pg9, and Pg15, accounting for 35.8% and 37.8% in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The sub-predominant races were TJN (30.2% in 2018, 28.3% in 2019) and TKN (20.8% in 2018, 12.3% in 2019). All isolates were virulent to Pg1, Pg2, Pg3, and Pg4, and avirulent to Pg6 and Pg16. The three predominant races (TJD, TJN, and TKN) were used to evaluate resistance in 30 Chinese oat cultivars at the seedling and adult-plant stages. Five cultivars, Bayan 1, Baiyan 2, Baiyan 3, Baiyan 5, and Baiyan 9, were highly resistant to the three races at both seedling and adult-plant stages. The results of the virulences and frequencies of P. graminis f. sp. avenae races and the resistant cultivars will be useful in understanding the pathogen migration and evolution and for breeding oat cultivars with stem rust resistance.

In this paper, N, Fe-codoped carbon dots (N, Fe-CDs) were synthesized from β-cyclodextrin, ethylenediamine, and ferric chloride for the first time using a convenient one-step hydrothermal method. The obtained N, Fe-CDs were characterized by various methods including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The N, Fe-CDs exhibited better catalytic activity than horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and caused an evident color change for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of H2O2. Kinetic experiments show that the apparent Km value for the N, Fe-CDs with TMB (0.40 mM) or H2O2 (0.35 mM) as the substrate was lower than that of HRP (0.43 and 3.70 mM), suggesting that the N, Fe-CDs have a much higher affinity for TMB and H2O2 than HRP. The Km/Vmax value for the N, Fe-CDs (21.74×103·s for H2O2) is significantly lower than that for HRP (42.53×103·s), suggesting that the N, Fe-CDs have a stronger catalytic efficiency for H2O2 than HRP. Furthermore, a highly efficient and sensitive colorimetric detection method for glucose was developed using the N, Fe-CDs as mimic peroxidase to detect the hydrogen peroxide generated by the oxidation of glucose by glucose oxidase. The limit of detection for H2O2 and glucose was found to be 0.52 and 3.0 μM, respectively. The obtained N, Fe-codoped carbon dots, which possess simulated peroxidase activity, can potentially be used in the field of biotechnology.

Abstract In the present study, rice husk ash, which is a renewable and abundant material, was utilized as a carrier for lipase immobilization for the first time. Poly (ε-caprolactone) synthesis was successfully achieved by the new enzymatic catalyst: Candida antarctica lipase B immobilized onto surface-modified rice husk ashes by covalent binding. It was aimed to obtain optimum polymerization conditions at which highest molecular weight was reached and characterize the polymer produced. Moreover, thermal stability and effectiveness of the new biocatalyst in non-aqueous media were also shown with successful polymerization reactions. In addition, by using the new enzyme preparation, ε-caprolactone was able to be polymerized even at 30°C, which was promising for an energy saving process. Consequently, this work provides a new alternative route for poly (ε-caprolactone) synthesis.

Abstract Multifunctional Cu (II)-based Metal Organic Framework (MOF) [Cu3(BTC)2] has been synthesized by a facile electrochemical method. Crystallographic and morphological characterizations of synthesized MOF have been done using Powder X-ray Diffractometer and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), respectively, whereas Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), UV-Vis Absorption Spectroscopy and Energy Resolved Luminescence Spectroscopic studies have been used for the detailed qualitative, quantitative as well as optical analyses. Sharp PXRD peaks indicate the formation of highly crystalline MOF with face centered cubic (fcc) structure. Flakes (average length = 0.71µm and width = 0.10 µm) and rods (average aspect ratio = ((0.1:8.3) µm) like morphologies have been observed in SEM micrographs. The presence of C, O and Cu has been confirmed by EDS analysis. Photocatalytic activity potential of the synthesized MOF has been tested using methylene blue dye (MB) as a test contaminant in aqueous media under sunlight irradiation. Selective and sensitive fluorescent sensing of different Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) like 4-Nitroaniline (4-NA), 2-Nitroaniline (2-NA), 3-Nitroaniline (3-NA), 4-Nitrotoulene (4-NT), 2,4-Dinitrotoulene (2,4-DNT), 1,3-Dinitrobenzene (1,3-DNB), 2,6-Dinitrotoulene (2,6-DNT) has been done by exploring the photoluminescent behaviour of chemically stable Cu3(BTC)2. Synthesized MOF is extremely sensitive towards 4-NA, which is having PL quenching efficiency of 82.61% with highest quenching rate till reported. Indeed, a large quenching coefficient KSV = 34.02 x 10− 7 M− 1 and correlation coefficient R2 = 0.9962 in KSV plot have been elucidated with limit of detection (LOD) = 0.7544 ppb. The possible ways of luminescence quenching are successfully explained by the combination of Photoinduced Electron Transfer (PET) and Resonance Energy Transfer (RET) mechanisms. Additionally, the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been employed to support the experimental results. Cu3(BTC)2 fully demonstrates the power of a multi component MOF, which provides a feasible pathway for the design of novel material towards fast responding luminescence sensing and photocatalytic degradation of pollutants.

The preparation and characterization of a hybrid composite, based on carbon cloth (CC) matrix functionalized with two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 flakes and MoO3, and its use for developing an electrochemical sensor for the determination of riboflavin (RF) is here reported. The 2D-MoS2-MoO3CC composite was prepared by depositing 2D-MoS2 nanosheets, obtained by liquid phase exfoliation (LPE), on the surface of a carbon cloth fiber network, previously functionalized with a layer of molybdenum oxide (α-MoO3) by radio-frequency magnetron reactive sputtering technique. The 2D-MoS2-MoO3CC composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), and Raman spectroscopy. An electrochemical sensor has been then fabricated by fixing a slice of the 2D-MoS2-MoO3CC composite on the working electrode of a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). The 2D-MoS2-MoO3-CC/SPCE sensor display good electrochemical characteristics which have been exploited, for the first time, in the electroanalytical determination of riboflavin (RF). The sensitivity to RF, equal to 0.67 µA mM−1 in the linear range from 2 to 40 µM, and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.5 µM at S/N = 3, demonstrate the promising characteristics of the proposed 2D-MoS2-MoO3-CC/SPCE electrochemical sensor for the determination of riboflavin.
