Circulating concentrations of hormones, metabolites, and minerals reflect the physio-pathological status of reproduction in animals. This study was carried out on infertile (anestrus, endometritic), normal healthy cyclic and pregnant buffaloes to evaluate the comparative plasma progesterone (P4) and estrogen (E2) hormones, plasma total protein, total cholesterol, calcium, and phosphorus profile. The study showed higher mean plasma E2 and lower P4 levels in the follicular phase of estrous cycle in buffaloes. Significantly (p less than 0.05) higher mean plasma P4 level and lower E2 levels were recorded during the luteal phase and in endometritic and pregnant buffaloes. Total plasma protein concentration was non-significantly higher in normal cyclic than acyclic and endometritic buffaloes. It was also comparatively lower in buffalo with 9 months of pregnancy than 3 and 6 months of pregnancy. The mean plasma total cholesterol level was significantly (p less than 0.05) higher in pregnant than acyclic and endometritic buffaloes. Cyclic buffaloes had significantly (p less than 0.05) higher mean plasma calcium levels than acyclic buffaloes. Plasma phosphorus concentration, however, did not show any significant difference between different stages of the reproductive cycle.

Background: Stroke is the second largest cause of death in the world. Stroke is classified based on its etiology as ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. Most large-scale studies on the risk of total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in stroke are not distinguished between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. Purposes: The purpose of this study was to determine the comparison of triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in ischemic stroke patients with hemorrhagic stroke. Method: Descriptive analytic study using medical records of patients at Medan Haji General Hospital in 2018-2019. The number of ischemic stroke patients is 28 patients and hemorrhagic stroke 28 patients with a total sample of 56 patients. Results: In ischemic stroke patients, the average value of triglyceride levels was 144.75 mg/dL and the average value of total cholesterol was 250.93 mg/dL. In hemorrhagic stroke patients, the average value of triglyceride levels is 126.93 mg/dL and the average total cholesterol level is 174.25 mg/dL. Conclusion: From this study we found a significant difference in total cholesterol between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. No significant difference was found in triglycerides between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.

To examine the effect of gender on the mechanisms of action of phytosterols extracted from tall oil (TO) and soybean (SB) on cholesterol and phytosterol metabolism, male and female hamsters were fed cholesterol-enriched diets containing 0.5 or 1% (w/w) TO or SB phytosterols for 90 days. Plasma lipoprotein cholesterol profile and tissue phytosterol and cholesterol biosynthesis levels were determined. Mean plasma total-cholesterol level in females fed 1% (w/w) SB was reduced (p < 0.05) by 44%, while in males it was lowered (p < 0.05) by 25% compared with their respective controls. Moreover, mean plasma total-cholesterol level was reduced (p < 0.05) in male hamsters by -31% and female hamsters by -32% when fed 1% (w/w) TO. Cholesterol biosynthesis was higher (p < 0.05) by twofold in groups fed TO at 0.5 and 1% (w/w) concentrations, compared with SB. Hamsters fed TO at 0.5 and 1% (w/w) levels also had higher (p < 0.05) hepatic and enterocytic campesterol contents than SB-fed animals. These findings demonstrate gender differences in cholesterol metabolism in TO- and SB-fed hamsters. The results suggest that TO, conversely to SB phytosterol, is a more effective cholesterol-lowering agent in male, but not as much in female, hamsters, over a feeding period of 90 days.Key words: phytosterols, cholesterol, sitosterol, sitostanol, gender, hamster.

Introduction: Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by high levels of total cholesterol in the blood. Many studies have proven that steeping tea rosella and flesh of an avocado can reduce total cholesterol levels. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of therapy companion rosella tea and  avocado in lowering total cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemia clients. Method: This type of research is a quasi-experimental study with pre-post test control group design. The population study was a client with hypercholesterolemia in the working area of menganti health centers. First sample group consisted of nine respondents received the drug Simvastatin 10 mg and rosella tea consumed as much as 2 g 1x / day. The second group consisted of nine respondents received the drug Simvastatin 10 mg and avocado meat weighing 330 grams were consumed 1x / day. The control group consisted of 11 respondents have a drug Simvastatin 10 mg oral 1x daily at night before bed. All groups examined total cholesterol levels before treatment and after treatment on day 15. Result: The results of one-way ANOVA test showed a significant difference between before and after treatment in the first group (p=0,001) and second group (p= 0,005), and there is no significant difference before and after treatment in the control group (p= 0,248). The difference between the three groups showed p= 0.025. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is giving rosella tea and avocado has the same effectiveness in lowering total cholesterol levels so that health workers can suggest the use of rosella tea and avocado as a companion therapy to reduce total cholesterol level.

Background: Hypercholesterolemia is a condition in which levels of cholesterol in the blood above normal levels (≥ 240 mg/dl). Physical exercises done regularly useful in the regulation of cholesterol, is total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood decreased, while HDL cholesterol increased. Food has an important role in association with the incident hypercholesterolemia.Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of aerobic exercise on blood total cholesterol level of adult women in the city of Semarang.Method: This research was explanatory research with cross sectional study. Subject was women aged 20-49 years gymnastic participants, as a comparison group was a housewife who was not doing gymnastics. Twenty three samples for group2 by matching on nutritional status and age and with the sampling purposive sampling. Adequacy levels of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and also vitamins A and C were obtained through 2x24-hour recall was not a sequence, and processed using NutriSurvey. Results of independent t-test used to determine the effect of cholesterol levels between groups, and chi square test was used to determine association with nutrient adequacy levels of total cholesterol.Results: The results showed no significant difference in mean total cholesterol level between groups of gymnastic participants (201.2 g/dl) with housewife group (208.3 g/dl). Housewife group was belonging to hypercholesterolemia by 52.2%, while in group of exercise participants at 43.5%. Sufficiency level of protein showed a role in the total cholesterol level of adult women.Conclusion: The aerobic gymnastics did not affect total cholesterol. Moderate level of protein adequacy contributes to the total cholesterol level of adult women.

Introduction: Adult individuals in Indonesia showed changes in diet and lack of physical activity, therefore increasing the risk of hypercholesterolemia and obesity. One of nutritional therapy for hypercholesterolemia is rice bran oil, which contains active substances that works synergistically in controlling lipid profile. The substances are gamma-orzanol, phytosterols, and vitamin E isomers (tocotrienol and tocopherol).Methods: A clinical trial was conducted for 4 weeks in City Hall of Jakarta on 20 males, age 19–55 years old, with mild-moderate hypercholesterolemia, to assess lipid profile improvement of the supplementation of rice bran oil 45 ml/days compared to 15 ml/days without changing eating patterns.Results: After 4 weeks of intervention, there was significant difference in total cholesterol level between both groups (p = 0.049). In the group that received 45 ml/days of rice bran oil, total cholesterol level decreased 14%, and in the group of 15 ml/days total cholesterol level decreased 7.8%. The reduction of LDL and triglycerides and the increase of HDL were not significantly different between both groups (p >0,05). There was no significant changes of body weight in both groups.Conclusion: This study showed that consumption of  45 ml/days rice bran oil led to better improvements in lipid profiles compare to 15 ml/days. It has been demonstrated that gamma oryzanol and plant sterols in rice bran oil have the capability to remove cholesterol from bile salt micelles, thus decreasing cholesterol absorption in intestine.

Background: Vegetarians are people who live from consuming plant-based (or plant-based) products with or without milk and eggs, but over all avoid eating meat, poultry and marine animals.. According to Household Health Survey (SKRT) cited Budiarti, in 2004 prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in Indonesia in the age range 25-65 years of 11.2%. One way to prevent elevated levels of cholesterol in the blood is to change the diet to become a vegetarian. Objective: To purpose the difference between energy intake, macro nutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrates), fiber, based on total cholesterol levels in young vegetarian adults in Indonesia Vegetarian Society Jakarta. Methods: Cross sectional study design, independent Bed T-Test test if normal distribution data and Mann Whitney if the data is not normally distributed. Determination of the sample was done by means of different test of two mean and obtained sample of 70 people. Results: The results of the statistical test obtained p-value for energy intake, protein intake, fat intake, carbohydrate intake based on total cholesterol level with normal and abnormal category showed significant difference (p-value ≤ 0,05), and mean fiber intake showed no significant difference (p-value > 0,05). Conclusions: There are differences in energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate intake based on normal and abnormal total cholesterol levels, and fiber intake are expressed as no difference. There is a need for nutritional counseling and routine monitoring of total cholesterol in young vegetarian adults in IVS Jakarta.
