A survey was conducted to assess the attitudes towards breastfeeding, its prevalence and duration among Kuwaiti married women. Five hundred eighty-five women from different regions of the country with at least one child of their own, willing to furnish data were included in the survey. The results of this study show that 71 percent of newborns are breastfed at birth. The percentage of breast-fed infants declines to 50 percent by the time they are one month old, and to 10 percent among five-month-old infants. The expected duration of breastfeeding is about two months. This study also reveals a wide gap existing between the attitudes, knowledge and practice of breastfeeding among Kuwaiti women. Their attitude towards breastfeeding is largely positive. This study emphasizes that with appropriate health education and supportive measures sensitive to the needs of this community, breastfeeding can retain its integral part in the process of human reproduction and child development.

Background: Inadequate infant feeding practices is a major contributor to the high burden of childhood morbidity and mortality in many countries. Female participation in the labour sector has increased and many of them return to work soon after giving birth posing a significant barrier to breastfeeding. This study assessed the knowledge and practice of breastfeeding among working mothers in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done among 360 working mothers selected by multistage sampling technique. Quantitative and qualitative data were collective using interviewer-administered questionnaire and key informant interview guide, respectively. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Scientific Solutions (SPSS) version 21.0 and significant level was set at p<0.05.Results: Two hundred and seventy-six (76.7%) of the respondents had good knowledge of breast feeding. More than three-quarters (77.2%) initiated breastfeeding within one hour of birth, 201 (55.8%) practiced exclusive breastfeeding correctly and 201 (55.8%) introduced complementary foods on time. Median duration of breastfeeding was 14.6 months. Less than half of them (41.7%) had good overall practice of breastfeeding. Level of education, sector of work, knowledge of breastfeeding and availability of on-site crèche were significantly associated with practice of breastfeeding. Common barriers to breastfeeding included poor spousal support, no paid maternity leave and non-availability of nearby crèches. Most of the organizations observed had a breast feeding policy. Conclusions: This study revealed a gap between the knowledge and practice of adequate breastfeeding among the respondents and identified some perceived barriers to optimal breastfeeding.

ABSTRACT Purpose This article evaluates the inter-relationship between the feeding time, presence of deleterious oral habits and the development of malocclusion. Materials and methods For this purpose, a document focused on the quantitative aspects and was prepared using forms filled out according to the information available in the medical records of 93 children of both genders, aged between 4 and 12 years old, who were treated at the Dental Clinic of UESB (University of the Southwest State of Bahia), Jequié Campus, in the period from 2006 to 2009. The Chi-square statistical test was applied. Results We observed a higher frequency of children who were naturally breast-fed for a period longer than 6 months (47%). There was a significant relationship between the shorter duration of breastfeeding leading to deleterious oral habits, and consequently to the development of malocclusion (p < 0.001). The existence of one or more deleterious oral habits also favored the development of malocclusion, even in the group that was breast-fed for longer than 6 months (p < 0.001). The habit that appeared most frequently was onychophagy (nail biting; 26%) followed by lingual interposition (17%) and pacifier sucking (14%). The highest prevalence of crowding was found among children with malocclusion (33%). Conclusion Mothers should be encouraged to extend the time of breastfeeding and motivate children not to develop deleterious oral habits, as these are crucial factors in diminishing the development of malocclusion.
