Reading is an essential skill for everybody especially for the students of Samtse College of Education who are future teachers. They need to read to enhance their communication skills, upgrade their knowledge and skills and be role models in reading for their students. However, we have found that the reading for pleasure habit among the students is poor. Students generally use social media during their leisure time instead of reading which is a concern both for their lecturers and the institution. An action research study was carried out to improve students’ reading for pleasure habit. Data for the study were gathered using a survey and interview. A total of 325 students completed the survey and 57 students participated in the interview. The data were collected twice; before (baseline) and after the intervention. Comparison of means was used to analyse the quantitative data and the qualitative data were analysed thematically. Following the analysis of the baseline data, three intervention strategies were employed; Our Time To Enjoy Reading (OTTER), Self-indulgence Reading, and Raffle Draw. These strategies were implemented in all the 16 classes for a period of 8 weeks. The comparison of the analysis of the pre-and post-data showed that the interventions have been effective in promoting the reading for pleasure habit of the students.

This chapter reports a research study that investigated the effectiveness of multimedia vocabulary annotations (MVAs) in facilitating acquisition of second language (L2) abstract vocabulary. Twenty-one collegiate L2 students read a hypermedia passage that contained marginal MVAs for eighteen unknown abstract words. Their knowledge of these words was assessed immediately after the reading activity and twelve days afterwards. The quantitative data from vocabulary assessments indicated that these students neither acquired more vocabulary knowledge nor retained this knowledge better by using MVAs than using traditional text-only annotations. The qualitative data collected from two questionnaires suggested that the participants had applied various strategies for assessing MVAs and they had encountered certain difficulties in understanding the visuals. The results are interpreted based on multimedia learning and visual perception theories. The implications of the results for designing multimedia L2 reading and listening materials are discussed.

Abstract Health promotion stakeholders are encouraged to base their intervention strategies on evidence. However, the evidence produced by public health research is outcome-based and provides little information on “how to act?” It is necessary to complete this evidence with experiential data constituting an evidence of a different nature, answering questions about organizations, skills and tools mobilized to achieve the results, and valuing skilled actors’ knowledge and good practice. For two years, a group of 15 French organizations has been working on capitalization and sharing experiential knowledge. This work is part of the setting up of a national evidence platform. After a benchmarking phase, the group developed and tested a capitalization method which focuses on the collection and analysis of qualitative data and aims to explain the contexts and processes at work in the actions: knowledge and skills, strategies, perceived challenges and facilitating factors, key moments. The group also worked on the structure, content and use of a shareable document. The test has shown the pedagogical interest of the method for the actors who were invited to develop a reflective thinking about their action, as well as the relevance of this method to build experiential knowledge. The ongoing group’s work concerns the dissemination of collected data. A practical guide for stakeholders is being finalised. The group is defining the selection process of the initiatives to be valued, in particular with regard to results that make sense for all stakeholders. The main difficulty of the approach - its low level of recognition and entrenchment in public health - will be discussed during the presentation, as well as the necessity to ensure the legitimacy of this approach in a context where the notion of evidence is centered on quantitative data produced with an objective defined “a priori” and in a controlled context. Key messages This work opens the way for an original reflection in public health to build a shareable experiential knowledge, and to valorize and strengthen field actors’ practical expertise. This work has pedagogical, political, scientific and informational impacts. It contributes to knowledge transfer and provides self-training, a practical vision of policies, and questions for research.

This study focuses on the relationship between preadolescents and youtubers, with the objective of observing how tweens integrate youtubers as referents of a teen digital culture. From a socio-psychological and communicological perspective, a mixed methodological design was applied to carry out the audience study, which was divided into two parts: a quantitative analysis of the audience via a survey administered to 1,406 eleven-twelve year old students of Catalan Secondary Schools, and a qualitative analysis of the preadolescence audience using three focus groups. The quantitative data was analysed with SPSS and the qualitative data with the help of the Atlas.ti software. The results demonstrate that tweens consider youtubers as referents for entertainment and for closeness to a teen digital culture, but not really as a role models or bearers of values as influencers. Also, preadolescents show some dimensions of Media Literacy, since they recognise youtubers’ commercial strategies and their role as actors and professionals. The study notes gender bias in some aspects, and is an introduction to observation of the social functions of youtubers amongst teenagers, individuals who are in the process of constructing their identity and on the point of becoming young adults.

This research study explored the potential of comics within an art therapy and narrative therapy framework. The process of depicting a past problem as a single image was compared to the process of depicting the same problem as a comic. This study worked with 15 normally functioning adults to compare the effectiveness of the two formats (comics vs. single image) in processing a past problem or challenge. Participants evaluated these two formats through a survey and a brief verbal interview. The quantitative data from the survey and the qualitative data from the interview were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of the comic format as compared to the single image format. The art-based data collected from participants’ single images and comics was also analyzed for unique characteristics the comic format evoked. All interactions with participants took place virtually over Zoom to ensure the safety of participants and the researcher during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysis of the quantitative and qualitative data indicated that participants responded positively towards the comic format. The comic format seemed especially effective at facilitating the narrative therapy technique of deconstruction. These results support the study’s hypothesis that the comic format is as effective or more effective than the single image format in eliciting a narrative from a past problem or challenge. The art-based data suggested that the comic format evokes unique representations of time and movement in participants’ narratives. The findings of this study strongly suggest that creating comics or sequential art has potential for use in an art therapy setting, particularly in helping clients process past problems or challenges.

This study seeks to help fill an important gap in the literature by investigating factors that have facilitated the use of management accounting practices (MAPs) in Vietnam - a transitional economy. Data were collected from 220 medium-to-large enterprises. Follow-up interviews were conducted with 20 accounting heads/vice heads to obtain further information and clarification. The quantitative data collected was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics (including t-tests and structural equation modeling), while the qualitative data was used to shed further light on the various relationships described by the quantitative analysis. This paper reveals that both decentralization and competition have a positive, significant influence on the use of new MAPs except for the old ones. Consequently, the use of MAPs has a positive, significant influence on enterprise performance.
