Abstract Background The inclusion of people with lived and living experience of substance use is essential to effective and client-centered harm reduction services and strategies. The aim of this study is to critically examine and characterize peer worker roles and the definition, recognition, and support for these roles within harm reduction organizations. Methods Fifteen interviews were conducted with peer workers—people with lived and living experience of substance use engaged in harm reduction service delivery—in British Columbia, Canada. An interpretive descriptive approach to data analysis was used to generate themes that best illustrated the roles of peer workers. Findings Two interrelated and overarching themes are presented: (1) peer work in practice; (2) organizational support. Our findings illustrate that peer work is incredibly complex and demanding, requiring peers to be at the forefront of support within their communities while simultaneously navigating the oppressive structures within which they work. While peer workers found a high degree of purpose and meaning in their day-to-day work, their roles lacked definition within organizations, which produced feelings of ineffectiveness and being undervalued. A lack of organizational understanding and recognition of their roles was evident from unclear "peer" role titles, a lack of role communication and expectations, the representation of experiential knowledge, and a lack of role support and training. Conclusions These findings may help harm reduction organizations understand peer work and worker roles which may inform and promote equity in future harm reduction initiatives that include people with living and lived experience of substance use.

ABSTRACT This paper provides an overview of the Scientific Support Coordinator (SSC) Training Guidebook and describes the knowledge and skills necessary for the SSC position. This Guidebook provides a principal set of knowledge and skills that a well-rounded SSC needs to successfully perform their duties. It describes technical skills and indicates opportunities for employees to acquire them. The Guidebook does not replace informal strategies, such as mentoring or on-the-job training, but incorporates all such informal strategies with more organized methods into a single document. We have included an introduction and background to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R), and the role of the Scientific Support Coordinator (SSC). We identify the SSC mandates, missions, and duties; establish the need for the Guidebook by describing the complexities of the job, anticipated turnover due to retirements, need for consistency across the country, increased need for bench depth, and NOAA Corps rotational assignments. The process employed to design and implement the Guidebook is explained, along with the rational for the design elements and content. Included are relevant examples from the Guidebook. A discussion on the use and implementation for new SSCs and the anticipated outcome from implementing this type of formalized and documented indoctrination process and training program are offered. This new Guidebook is more than a simple checklist. One goal of this revision is to be engaging for new SSCs. To achieve that goal, SSCs themselves wrote this Guidebook from the perspective of the new SSC, explaining the benefits of the Guidebook's elements specifically for a new SSC. Workgroup members analyzed the previous versions to identify the assumptions about knowledge and skills of the new SSC when they are hired, and the expected improvements in knowledge and skills that will be gained once they have been completed.

The finding showed that there is an increase in ethics practice in terms of the right intention, good conduct, initiator of goodness, fulfilling promise and; disciplined and civilised. However, in the aspect of discipline and conduct, there is significant difference between pre and post test that is (p< 0.05). Study findings give the implication that attitude, training and role of leaders are important in determining that this principle is implemented successfully.

Historically, leadership in Nigeria has been construed to be a male province based on African culture and tradition. As a result of this longstanding convention, females in leadership roles including education are subjected to different standards, which in effect constitute an effort to cast doubt on their ability and credibility. However, the past few decades have witnessed a change in leadership perspectives as many females now occupy supervisory positions. This study utilized survey research to examine leadership practices of male and female principals at the secondary school level in Nigeria in order to ascertain if there are differences in leadership styles. The sample was comprised of 303 teachers, 156 females and 147 males, and 24 principals, 12 females and 12 males. Six hypotheses were tested. The independent t and Mann-Whitney tests were utilized for analyses. Results were mixed as testing gave no significant difference with regard to two leadership dimensions and significant differences existed for four leadership dimensions.
