In this research work, samples of the biocomposite were manufactured using the vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique, whose matrix is a polyester resin and the reinforcement is a biaxial fabric (90°) made with jute fiber. Then, tensile and flexural tests were carried out on standardized specimens under ASTM standards, in order to mechanically characterize the jute-polyester biocomposite. In both destructive tests, the results showed a linear-elastic behavior with brittle fracture and greater strength of the jute-polyester biocomposite, with respect to the thermosetting matrix’s properties. Subsequently, a finite element based static analysis was performed, with the help of the ANSYS software, to determine the mechanical behavior of interior opening handle for a car door. In it, a model sensitivity study was run to determine the influence of the mesh type and identify the convergence of mesh. Later, the static analysis results were obtained: critical zone, maximum operating stress and safety factors. The results obtained computationally validate the use of jute-polyester biocomposite, as a substitute for the manufacture of an interior opening handle for a car door. Finally, a scale model of the piece made with jute-polyester biocomposite was manufactured.

The topic of this research work was to demonstrate the feasibility of a 3D-MID concept using injection molding technique and investigate the effects of two weld line types on the structure and mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural strength and morphology. In order to obtain more understanding of the bonds between polymer and metals, two different polymer bases of polyphthalamide (PPA) with the same type and amount of filler content were produced by injection molding at the different processing conditions. A mold was designed in such a way that weld and meld line can be produced with different angles by changing as insert inside of the mold. The mechanical properties such as stiffness, tensile strength and flexural strength were determined in tensile and flexural tests, respectively. The results showed in line with the expectation of high reduction on mechanical properties in area where weld/meld lines occurred. The result of tensile test was clearly seen that weld and meld line showed a considerable influence on mechanical properties. The reduction in tensile strength was approximately 58% according to weld line types, whereas in flexural strength was approximately 62%. On the other hand, the effect of the injection times and mold temperatures on the tensile strength were marginal.

Abstract Discussion of a Performance - Based Engineering evaluation procedure for an existing interstate highway bridge in north Mississippi. The bridge is in a highly trafficked location near the Memphis Metropolitan area and is reflective of modern design practices in Mississippi. Results are presented of nonlinear damage response and displacement ductility performance of the reinforced concrete bents and their foundations predicted using static finite element (FE) computations. The model considers the composite action of the concrete and the reinforcing steel materials under axial force, shear, torsion and flexure. The performance-based evaluation includes three-dimensional computational simulations of the nonlinear bridge system, including substructures and superstructure. The response spectrum dynamic analysis method will also be carried out on the linear elastic three-dimensional model to predict the linear elastic behavior. Field vibration measurements, including ambient and hammer-impact, were performed to calibrate the models. The computed transfer functions are currently being evaluated to correlate vibration measurements and the Finite element models.

The total strain, elastic plus plastic, was measured with strain gages on valve bodies with internal pressure that caused surface yielding. The correlation of the simulated maximum principal strain was compared to strain gage data. A mesh sensitivity study shows that in regions of large plastic strain, mesh elements are required that are an order of magnitude smaller than what is used for linear elastic stress analysis for the same structure. A local mesh refinement was adequate to resolve the local high strain values. Both the location and magnitude of the maximum strain changed with a local mesh refinement. The local mesh refinement requirement was consistent over several structures that were tested. The test and simulation work will be presented along with the mesh sensitivity study. Some results on using an energy stabilization technique to aid convergence will be presented in terms of the impact on the predicted plastic strain.

Reinforced and pre-stressed concrete have been used increasingly for various kinds of complex structures in the past decades. The structures assembled from panels belong into this group. The current design methods rely on linear elastic analyses based on empirically derived material laws assuming homogeneous and isotropic material. Practical experience and various investigations however have indicated that majority of structures and structural elements are in fact stressed beyond the range of linear elastic behavior. In addition, long term effects may have a significant influence on the structural behavior of this category of structures and structural members.

The objective of the paper is to investigate the direction of a further crack propagation from the interface between two elastic materials. The angle of crack propagation changes when the crack passes the interface. The suggested procedure makes it possible to estimate an angle of propagation under which the crack will propagate into the second material. The assumptions of linear elastic fracture mechanics and elastic behavior of the body with interfaces are considered. The finite element method was used for numerical calculations. The results obtained might contribute to a better understanding of the failure of materials with interfaces (e.g. layered composites, materials with protective coatings) and to a more reliable estimation of the service life of such structures.

In this investigation, conventional hand layup method was employed to fabricate hybrid epoxy laminate composite. Jute fiber, E-glass fiber and carbon fiber fabrics of 500,200,200 gsm respectively were used as a reinforcements and epoxy with k-6 hardener was used as a matrix material. Tensile, compression and flexural tests were conducted as per the ASTM standards. It is observed that jute/carbon/epoxy laminate of 2mm thickness plate exhibits significant mechanical properties compare to jute/glass/epoxy laminate of 2mm laminate composite.
