Parenting style and peer attachment as predictors of emotional instability in children

We analyzed the roles of parenting style and peer attachment in predicting emotional instability in late childhood and early adolescence. Effects were analyzed separately by gender. Children's personal variables analyzed were empathy, anger, and the mechanisms used to cope with anger (externalization and self-control). Participants were 316 girls and 294 boys (N = 610) aged from 9 to 12 years who were students at schools in Valencia, Spain. Main gender differences for each variable were examined using one-way ANOVAs. Results of 2 multiple linear regression analyses (1 for boys and 1 for girls) explained 50.9% and 35.5%, respectively, of variance in the students' emotional instability. Considering emotional and cognitive variables, the results for our participant group show that parenting styles and peer attachment were equally significant as predictors of emotional instability.

Background: The type of parent’s child rearing and the perception of problems by adolescents are one of the important reasons for the formation of inappropriate behavior and delinquency in adolescents. Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to determine the relationship of perceived parenting styles with self-control capacity and affective self-regulation among delinquent adolencents. Materials & Methods: The research type was descriptive-correlational. The population of this study included all delinquent adolescents (N=94) from the Guilan Provincial Reconstruction and Upbringing Center and temporary detention centers in 2017-2018. Seventy-three adolescents were selected and completed the Parenting Style Inventory (PSI), Tangney Self-Control Scale (TSCS) and Measure of Affect Regulation Styles (MARS). The data were processed using Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analyses by SPSS V. 22 software. Results: Regression analysis indicated that authoritative parenting style positively (β=0.906, P<0.001) and authoritarian parenting style negatively (β=-0.537, P<0.001) 38% of the changes were predicted in the SCS among delinquent adolencents (F=20.511. P<0.001). Also, the authoritative parenting style negatively (β=-0.641, P<0.001) 41% of the changes were predicted in the MARS among delinquent adolencents (F=47.543, P<0.001). The permissive parenting style was not statistically significant in any of the regression analyses (P>0.05). Conclusion: Parenting styles have an effective role in the emergence and inhibition of delinquent behavior. It seems that authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles respectively play a role in improving and weakening self-control capacity and affective self-regulation in delinquent behavior among adolencents boys.

<p><span>Adolescents undergo drastic changes in terms of physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychosexual aspects. Those changes result in unstable emotions within themselves. Accompanied with high level of curiosity as a process of searching for identity, this emotional instability causes adolescents to frequently engage in actions that do not comply with the rules and norms of the society, known as juvenile delinquency. This stud aims at discovering whether permissive, authoritative, and authoritarian parenting styles are related to juvenile delinquency tendency. The participants of this study are 151 students from X school. This study can be considered as a quantitative research with correlational non-experimental design. Due to abnormal data distribution, Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the data. This study concluded that authoritarian and permissive parenting styles are not related to juvenile delinquency tendency (p&gt;0.05) whereas authoritative parenting style is significantly related to juvenile delinquency tendency (p&lt;0.05). Furthermore, the direction of the relationship between authoritative parenting style and juvenile delinquency tendency revealed negative correlation, which means the more authoritative the parenting style is, the lower the tendency will be.</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><strong><span>Keywords:</span></strong><span> Juvenile delinquency, authoritative parenting style, authoritarian parenting style, permissive parenting style</span></p>

<p>This study has the aim to analyze the different role of parental styles (affect and communication versus control), of functional developmental variables (empathy and adaptative coping styles) and dysfunctional variables (emotional instability and inefficient coping styles) in school victimization, or conversely with peer attachment. Participants were 418 Spanish adolescents, 224 girls and 194 boys, aged between 13 - 14 years old and attending year 7 and year 8 of secondary school. Structural equation modeling was carried out using the EQS program.</p>Results shows that parenting styles of affect and communication versus negative control are both directly related to functional and dysfunctional developmental variables. Negative control is also directly related to the school victimization. Also, functional variables are directly related to the school victimization and peer attachment, while dysfunctional variables only are related to school victimization. Finally, results and their possible implications are discussed.

Abstract Background: Parenting styles were positively associated with self-harm (SH) in adolescents. Nevertheless, little is known concerning the mechanism behind this association. This study primarily aims to evaluate the potential mediation of impulsivity in the association between parenting styles and SH in Chinese adolescents. Methods: A population-based sample of 3146 adolescents in southwest China were surveyed by using self-administered questionnaires. Logistic regression analyses were used to measure the association between parenting styles and SH. Path model further examined mediation of impulsivity in this association. Results: The prevalence of SH was 47.0% (95% CI: 36.3%-58.0%). Impulsivity and mother’s over-protection were significantly associated with SH. Impulsivity showed a salient mediation, accounting for 23.4% of the total association. Parenting styles of father and mother showed disparate roles in the hypothesized path model. Conclusions: Our major findings suggested that, for Chinese adolescents with harsher maternal parenting style, impulsivity-centered intervention measures might be effective in reducing parenting style related SH.

Remaja yang tidak mampu menghadapi tekanan akan membawanya pada ketidakstabilan emosional dan cenderung melakukan berbagai perilaku berbahaya hingga bunuh diri. Bunuh diri memiliki faktor protektif berupa harga diri tinggi karena dapat memberikan kualitas psikologis positif. Faktor protektif ide bunuh diri lainnya yaitu pola asuh yang seimbang antara dimensi penerimaan dan pengendalian atau disebut pola asuh otoritatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan harga diri dan pola asuh orangtua dengan ide bunuh diri pada remaja SMA. Desain penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif korelatif dan pendekatan secara chross-sectional. Penelitian ini memiliki responden sejumlah 322 remaja di SMA yang dipilih dengan teknik proportional random sampling. Terdapat hubungan yang kuat dan arah negatifantara harga diri dengan ide bunuh diri dengan koefisien korelasi -0,876, yang berarti bahwa semakin rendah harga diri yang dimiliki remaja maka semakin tinggi ide bunuh diri. Terdapat hubungan dengan kekuatan sedangdan arah negatif antara pola asuh orangtua dengan ide bunuh diri dengan koefisien korelasi -0,365, artinya apabila pola asuh orangtua mengarah pada otoritatif maka ide bunuh diri akan semakin rendah, dan sebaliknya apabila pola asuh orangtua mengarah pada otoritarian maka ide bunuh diri akan semakin tinggi. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan intervensi keperawatan jiwa dalammengidentifikasi ide bunuh diri pada remaja, serta meningkatkan wawasan remaja dan guru terkait faktor protektif ide bunuh diri.   Kata kunci: faktor proteksi, harga diri,ide bunuh diri,dan pola asuh orangtua   SELF-SELF-PRICE AND PARENT'S PATTERN AS SELF-KILLING IDEAS PROTECTIVE FACTORS   ABSTRACT Teenagers who do not cope well under pressure will lead them to emotional instability and tend to perform a variety of malicious behavior or commit to suicide. Suicidial Ideation has protective factor such as high self esteem, because it can provide positive psychological qualities.Other protective factor is parenting style that contain balance between the dimensions of acceptance and control, also called authoritative. This study aims to determine the relationship of self-esteem and parenting Stylewith Suicidial Ideation in high school adolescents. This study used descriptive correlative and cross-sectional approach. This study has a number of 322 respondents, that are high school adolescents selected by proportional random sampling technique. There is strong relationshipwith negative directionbetween self-esteem with suicidal ideationand the correlation coefficient is -0,876, which means that the if adolescent’s self-esteem is lower so suicidal ideation will be higher. There is moderate relationshipwith negative direction between parenting style with suicidal ideation and the correlation coefficient is -0,365, which means that if parenting style is authoritative so suicidal ideation will be lower, and if parenting style is authoritarian so suicidal ideation will be higher.This study can be used to improve nursing intervention in identify suicidal ideation, and also to improve teenager’s and teacher’s knowledge about protective factors of suicidal ideation.   Keywords: parenting style, protective factor,self-esteem and suicidal ideation

BACKGROUND With growing accessibility and need over the past decades, the Internet has experienced a rapid increase in use globally. Specifically, with the accelerated development in information technology, more than 90% of Hong Kong’s citizens use the Internet, and 70% of children in the age group of 6-17 have daily access to it. However, despite the benefits of Internet technology, its addiction could pose serious social and health issues. Therefore, conducting research to investigate its causes and risk factors is fundamental. OBJECTIVE In this study, we examined the relationship between worry and Internet addiction among children in Hong Kong, and investigated the moderating effect of the permissive parenting style on such relationship. METHODS The participants consisted of 227 fourth-grade and fifth-grade students (120 males, 52.9%) from primary schools in Hong Kong with a mean age of 9.55 (SD = .58). Each participant was asked to complete the questionnaires, including the Internet Addiction Test for Internet addiction, the Penn State Worry Questionnaire for Children for worry, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire for the permissive parenting style. RESULTS The results indicated that worry was related to greater Internet addiction among children. Furthermore, there was a moderating effect of the permissive parenting style such that the positive association between worry and Internet addiction was stronger when the permissive parenting style was higher. CONCLUSIONS Our findings imply that parenting styles are influential in the prevention of Internet addiction.

AbstractObjectivesRisk-taking reasons in adolescents are divided into four cognitive, emotional, socio-environmental, and family factors. Structure, composition, and size of family as well as parenting styles effect on the development of creative abilities, transmitting cultural and social values, and the amount of adolescent risk-taking. The present study aimed to evaluate the tendency toward high-risk behaviors based on ways of interacting with children in only-child families.MethodsThis research is a descriptive analytical study. The research population was only-child adolescents and one of their parents who referred to health centers in Qazvin city to receive healthcare. The sampling has been conducted in census method. The data collection tools were adolescents’ risk-taking questionnaires and Baumrind Parenting style Inventory which were completed by adolescents and one parent, respectively. The questionnaires were completed in health centers of Qazvin City, and the sampling was conducted since February to September 2018. The SPSS version 24 was used to analyze the data.ResultsOne hundred and seventeen adolescents aged between 13 and 19 years together with one of their parents participated in this study. The majority of the mothers were housewives (62.9%) and fathers were either employees or self-employed (76.9%). Authoritative parenting style was the most dominant parenting style amongst parents (93%), and the majority of the samples (78%) had the least amount of risk. The average risk-taking score of adolescents was 23.3 ± 61.29 and the highest risk-taking behavior was dangerous driving (12.83). Risk-taking amount was negatively correlated with authoritative parenting style (r = −0.20, p = 0.28), while having direct and meaningful correlation with the permissive style (r = 0.20, p = 0.02).ConclusionThe authoritative parenting style in only-child families has been a dominant trend that justifies the intimate parent-children relationships and decreases the risk-taking amount of adolescents. Therefore, parents are suggested to focus on increasing their relationship with their adolescents, rather than reducing their family size.

Background: Anxiety disorders are common in children and contribute to adverse developmental outcomes. Although etiological models of child anxiety have identified various environmental factors, very few studies in India have examined these factors in children presenting with anxiety disorders. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine parenting styles, parental personality, and child temperament in children with anxiety disorders in an Indian outpatient setting. Methods: In total, 42 children with anxiety disorders and 42 typically developing children, matched on age and gender, were screened using Child Behavior Checklist, Color Progressive Matrices, and Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders Parent version. Their parents were screened using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0, following which they filled the questionnaires for parenting styles, parent personality, and child temperament. Results: There were significant differences between the two groups on parenting style, parent personality, and child temperament. Anxiety disorder was positively associated with the father’s permissiveness and negatively with the mother’s authoritativeness and child’s sociability. A combination of parenting styles and child temperament explained 69% of the variances in child anxiety disorders. There were significant associations between parental personality, child temperament, and parenting style. Parent and child characteristics explained 14%–46% of the variances in parenting styles. Conclusion: Results of this study are generally consistent with Western studies outlining the influence of child temperament and parenting styles on child outcome and have important implications for clinical management of anxiety disorders.

Both parenting and peer relationship are essential in the formation of self-esteem among the adolescents which lead to overall psychological development. Life satisfaction is another outcome that describes the subjective well-being of any person and the quality of one’s life. Literature has already suggested the importance of parenting and peer relationships in the development of self-esteem which may lead to life satisfaction among adolescents. However, the relationship between three styles of parenting as well as peer attachment and life satisfaction mediated by self-esteem seems to be missing from the literature. This work is an important attempt toward fulfilling this research gap with respect to adolescents. The data were collected from 500 respondents which resulted in 412 functional responses. Structural equation modeling method was used to test the relationship in the study. The results revealed that both authoritative and permissive parenting have a positive influence on self-esteem in comparison to the negative influence of authoritarian parenting. Peer attachment also has an affirmative impact on self-esteem. Self-esteem also positively influences life satisfaction. Mediation results revealed that self-esteem partially mediates the association between three parenting styles, peer attachment, and life satisfaction. This study may offer unique insights to family counselors, couple counselors, and family educators about the role of different parenting styles and peer attachment with respect to the development of children’s self-esteem and life satisfaction. These results are also important for psychologists, sociologists, and other specialists with respect to understanding these factors for the well-being of adolescents.

This study has been conducted with the objective of evaluating the role of parenting styles in prediction of behavioral disorders in children with Learning Disability (LD). This study is a descriptive work conducted using correlation methods in kind of prediction model and statistical population in this study consists of children with learning disability (LD) referring to Educational and Rehabilitation Centers for Specific Learning Disorders of Tehran during academic year 2014-15. Using purposeful and voluntary sampling method, 130 people were selected as sample size. Data collection instrument in this study includes Bumerind parenting style questionnaire and Child Behavior Checklist for ages 6-18 Achenbach system of empirically based assessment (CBCL). Data analysis was done using Pearson correlation and multivariate regression using SPSS. The results obtained from the study showed that there is no significant correlation between authoritarian and authoritative parenting style and any components of behavioral disorders of LD children and only permissive parenting style has negative and significant correlation with externalized disorders of LD children.
