The biology and morphometrics of pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis were studied on chickpea cultivar ICCV 2 under laboratory conditions at ICRISAT, Patancheru, Telangana, India during 2018-19 and 2019-2020. The experiments were carried out in the BOD incubator at temperature of 28 ± 2ºC and relative humidity of 65 to 70%. The life cycle of C. chinensis included four stages egg, grub, pupae and adult. The data revealed that eggs incubation period in 4-5 days, the grub stage consisted of four instars and its development ranged from 20-25 days, pupation lasted for 6-7 days, whereas, female adult longevity ranged from 9-12 days. The morphometric measurements revealed that the average length and breadth of eggs were 0.62 ± 0.03mm and 0.34 ± 0.02 mm respectively. The length and breadth (mm) of four grub instars G1, G2, G3 and G4  were 0.58 ± 0.02 and 0.30 ± 0.01, 1.53 ± 0.06 and 0.92 ± 0.04, 2.71 ± 0.10 and 1.47 ± 0.06, 3.59 ± 0.14 and 1.96 ± 0.08 respectively. The average length and breadth of pupa were 3.72 ± 0.12 mm, 2.15 ± 0.09 mm. Whereas, the length and breadth (mm) of  adult male and female bruchids were 3.87 ± 0.08, 2.07 ± 0.05 and 4.23 ± 0.14, 2.31 ± 0.07 respectively. The total life cycle of C. chinensis ranged from 33-42 days.

Among the insecticides tested as seed protectants against Callosobruchus chinensis under ambient condition for a period of nine months revealed that all seed protectants were significantly effective. Maximum germination was observed (86.67%) when seed treated with novaluron 10 EC @0.05ml/kg followed by emamectin benzoate 5 SG@40mg/kg (85.67 per cent). The vigour index was maximum in emamectin benzoate (1913.87) followed by novaluron.

Abstract Cold plasma has proven itself as a promising method of food preservation by controlling food spoilage bacteria at very low temperatures. It is showing potential for insect control. Synthetic pesticides are mostly used to control Callosobruchus chinensis to which it has developed resistance. The prospective potential of cold plasma treatment to control pulse beetle infestation of chickpea in the storage for about 4 years of plasma treatment was studied. The four chickpea cultivars were treated with cold plasma at different power 40, 50, and 60 W each for 10, 15, 20 min. Plasma treated and untreated chickpeas were stored in an airtight ziplock pouch. At regular intervals, the grains were observed for infestation. It was found most effective in controlling the pulse beetle infestation of treated chickpea samples. While plasma untreated chickpeas were attacked and damaged mostly by pulse beetle within the first quarter of the storage study. To avoid the problems created by the use of pesticides cold plasma treatment is found to be the best alternative in the protection of chickpea invasion by pulse beetle during a longer storage period. The findings in the present research may be used for the preparation of legumes which may also soak and cook faster like quick-cooking legumes and preserved for years without invasion of pulse beetle.

Experiments were conducted in the laboratory of the Division of Entomology, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh to evaluate the efficacy of four indigenous plants parts such as leaves of raintree (Albizia saman), riot lata (Mikania micrantha), pithraj (Aphanamixis polystachya) and seeds of mahogani (Swietenia macrophylla) with methanol extracts at the rates of 10.0, 7.5, 5.0 and 2.5% for their direct toxicity against the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis (L.). The experiments were set up following Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The results showed that extracts of all the plant parts had very close efficacy in relation to direct toxicity effect and grain protection values. Pithraj leaf extract showed the highest mortality (96.66%) action and raintree leaf extract showed the lowest (80.33%) with 10% extract at 5 DAT. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory to assess the effectiveness of Nogos, Malathion, Sevin and Limper on lentil, gram, grasspea, greengram and blackgram seeds with eggs of pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis L. Insecticides were sprayed on the seeds along with eggs and found that all the tested insecticides inhibited hatching of eggs resulting in significantly lowest rate of adult emergence. Nogos and Malathion recorded the lower number of emergent adults. The overall 26.35- 100% reduction of seed damage and 40-100% weight losses were achieved in insecticides treated seeds of five different types of pulses showing highest reduction in seed damage and weight losses due to Nogos and Malathion treatments. The treatment of the pulse seeds with the insecticides did not affect the seed germination. Key words: Insecticides, pulse beetle, egg treatment, pulses, seed damage.

A total of 52 accessions of cowpea including two checks (Pusa Komal and Local variety) were screened for resistance to pulse beetle, <italic>Callosobruchus chinensis</italic> under no-choice artificial infestation conditions. There were significant differences among the accessions in terms of number of eggs laid, development period, adult emergence, number of emergence holes, weight loss and growth index of <italic>C. chinensis</italic> on cowpea. Based on growth indices, Pusa Komal (0.04081) and IC328859 (0.04112) were resistant while IC106033 (0.06819) and Local variety (0.06816) were most susceptible to <italic>C. chinensis</italic>. Of the 52 accessions screeened, 11 accessions were resistant, 15 moderately resistant, 13 moderately susceptible, 8 susceptible and 5 were highly susceptible to <italic>C. chinensis.</italic> Correlation between growth index and growth parameters of pulse beetle on different cowpea accessions indicated that growth index had significant negative relationship with mean development period (r = -0.68) and significant positive relationship with adult emergence(r = +0.80). Adult emergence had a positive relationship with weight loss (r = +0.22).

Investigations were carried out during 2013 on mung bean for their susceptibility against Callosobruchus chinensis L. under storage. Among the mung bean varieties; Vishal, Samrat, GM-3, GM-4 and K-851 were found resistant based on oviposition preference (7.97/20 seeds, 8.74, 8.99, 9.17 and 9.49, respectively), population growth (345.09, 371.99, 397.50, 405.52, and 437.56, respectively), per cent weight loss (6.11%, 7.43%, 8.08%, 9.28% and 11.04%, respectively) and per cent germination loss (29.27%, 36.03%, 34.91%, 40.36% and 40.42%, respectively) against C. chinensis. Variety VMS-6 was also found resistant based on oviposition preference (9.61), population growth (437.56) and germination loss (43.87%) whereas GM-2 was resistant based on oviposition preference (10.72).
