Through an ethnography on a beach in Rio de Janeiro, I describe some living spaces and, from them, I get inspired to think about some elements of that reality, taking into account the immense complexity that street movements impose on any reflective proposal. In addition, I develop my relationship with the field in the middle of making music. Thus exploring the content of the songs sung in the field and the collective exercises of singing them. This allowed to give importance to the movement, which is a key aspect in these reflections. Through the category Exu - developed in Afro-Brazilian religions - and some authors of symbolic interactionism, I understand the homeless person as a relational dimension. From there, it is possible to reflect on the conditions on the street, the production of knowledge derived from them and the importance of this in the exercise of recreating the city of Rio de Janeiro and its public spaces.Keywords: homeless. Thus, it is necessary to expand the knowledge in Occupational Therapy regarding the daily lives of children (Erês), especially those in the terreiro, which print forms of sacred involvement, based on traditional occupations, where the inside and outside of the terreiro have very tenuous limits. Aim: To understand the involvement in traditional occupations and the meanings and implications that these have in the wider daily life of children in the terreiro. Method: Dialogue activities were conducted during the development of a qualitative and exploratory research in Occupational Therapy, with a participant-research approach, with seven children from a candomblé terreiro in the city of São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between October and November 2016. Results: Graphic activities were produced that composed the children's narratives about the daily life of the terreiro. A mural served as a synthesis of the narratives and identification of four themes that made it possible to discuss traditional occupations in childhood, namely: 1) My life in the terreiro; 2) Being a child in the terreiro; 3) Being a child in a terreiro outside the terreiro; and 4) The Erê Yá L’omi project. Discussion: The themes highlight the senses of belonging, the identity construction and the ways of dealing with the violence of religious intolerance in the broader social life. Final considerations: Tradition and ancestry are fundamental elements of the occupational involvement of children and young people from the terreiro. This involvement refers to an intergenerational fabric, as they are closely linked to (re) existence and to the functions and learning in the terreiro. Keywords: Traditional occupations. Childhood. This article presents the results of a Project process held in the under-spaces of two viaducts in the Laranjeiras district in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This process is part of a community-university partnership project, the “Square, the Street and the District”, which has been developed by students and professors of different fields and courses. This project aims to emphasize the relevance of interventions in the cities are made by a direct mode of popular participation, both in the elaboration and in the implementation of landscape architecture and urban proposals. A collaborative process was shaped to embody the notion that there is a “local knowledge, which is nurtured by the daily life”, as Milton Santos (1997, p.7) argues. Here, we narrate the methodological construction and the process of design experience in this case at the Laranjeiras.district. With this, we expect to demonstrate how the design and building of the city can be developed thorough participative and collaborative processes. The existence of an assembled and well informed project can be an environment to foster discussion so that more just and appropriate solutions may get forge.

In 2020, the rapid spread of Covid-19, a disease caused by a highly contagious virus, led many governments to adopt measures of social distancing, including the suspension of activities considered non-essential and the closure of public spaces. In Brazil, a country that is distinguished by sun, sea and sand tourism (3s), the effects were immediate in the months of March, April, May and June: closed beaches and the suspension of all economic activities linked to it. This article seeks to understand the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on a traditional sector of the beach economy in Rio de Janeiro, the “tent business”. For that, we analyzed: 1) the organization of this sector in the pre-pandemic period; 2) the legal measures adopted to contain the spread of the new coronavirus and which affected the uses of beaches; 3) the effects of the pandemic on the daily lives of beach workers 4) the challenges for the resumption of activities in the post-pandemic period. The data used in this research are the result of surveys and fieldwork carried out in the period before the pandemic and the application, during quarantine, of semi-structured interviews, via social networks, with owners and employees of tents on the beaches of the city’s waterfront. For this study, the normative measures that affected the beaches of the city of Rio de Janeiro during the pandemic were also analyzed. As main results, we highlight, first, the importance of the “tent business” in the economic circuits associated with Rio beaches, as well as the role that tents play as poles of concentration of bathers in the sand strip. Regarding governmental measures of social distance, we noticed that the beaches were one of the areas affected for the longest time by the suspension of activities and that, until the total reopening occurred in October, the activities associated with the solarium, such as the “tent business”, were those that presented a more uncertain horizon of recovery. The impacts on the daily lives of the owners of the tents and their employees were enormous, with the vertiginous decrease of their incomes and the difficulties of finding alternative occupations. These effects were partially offset by the adoption of assistance measures by governments and the creation of support networks involving beachgoers, both Brazilian and foreigner, as a result of a relationship built over the years with stallholders and other beach workers. Finally, from a comparative exercise with other situations in the world, we highlight the challenges that are already being faced for the adoption of new ways of ordering the uses of beaches in the post-pandemic world. Keywords: Coastal management, social distancing, beach workers, beachfront, solarium.

ABSTRACT In this article we analyze the determinants of confidence in the Police Pacification Units ( Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora – UPPs). During their existence (2008-2018), “pacification” was represented by the media as an institutional hybrid which moved between two extremes. The police were either presented as heroes, whom people wanted to guarantee the end of shootings and ensure security in areas previously marked by violence, or as villains, rejected because of the lethality of their actions and the arbitrariness of how they dealt with people. Taking these representations as ideal types, we sought to identify the determinants of confidence in the police, with the counterpoint being a domiciliary survey carried out between 2014 and 2016 with 2000 residents distributed among twenty “pacified” favelas in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The results indicated that the respondents had ambiguous sentiments towards the UPP police, mediated by the perception that shootings were part of daily life in these communities and that the “pacification” had improved security, making the police neither heroes nor villains.

The chapter studies two photographic projects organized by groups of favela photojournalists in Rio de Janeiro. Moro na Favela (I Live in a Favela) was an itinerant exhibit that was displayed in various communities and cultural centers from 2006 to 2008, and Imagens do Povo (Images of the People), a book published in 2012, contains 102 photographs taken by 25 community photographers. The chapter examines the ways in which the photographs propose an alternative aesthetic of representation, challenging a regime of seeing through which the city has traditionally sought to recognize itself. It illustrates how the two photographic projects expose aspects that are part of the realm of daily life that are traditionally over/mislooked. The chapter also addresses briefly the spaces of circulation of the two cultural productions.

The interaction between transportation systems, Internet connectivity, and location-aware mobile applications is increasingly relevant to urban mobility. Location-based apps not only assist individuals in more efficient movement through urban spaces but also impact the way individuals experience the city. More recently, location-based taxi-hailing apps are also a part of ongoing transformations in urban mobility. These apps are increasingly popular in the United States, and this trend is spreading to countries outside the Global North. While taxi-hailing apps have been studied in the context of infrastructure and planning, law, and regulations, little scholarship exists on the daily uses of these apps and how they are embedded within a context of ongoing surveillance, politics of mobility, and digital literacy. This chapter examines the impact of location-based ride-hailing applications on daily urban mobility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of the largest cities in the Global South. Through a qualitative study including taxi drivers and passengers who use location-based taxi-hailing apps, we investigate how a group of passengers and drivers in Rio de Janeiro integrates ride-hailing apps into their daily routines and how these apps influence mobility within the city. The findings suggest that while location-based services have normally been seen as a threat to privacy, in this group’s case they are a source of security. Furthermore, while taxi-hailing apps were overwhelmingly perceived by the participants as adding convenience to their daily lives, they are still embedded into a politics of mobility, invisibility, surveillance, data collection, and control that is often invisible to passengers and drivers alike.

Jakarta is a fascinating location for both artists and art curators. This paper attempts to show how the city serves as a cultural open stage where ordinary dreams unfold through the practices of contemporary art in the daily lives of citizens. Utilizing the philosophical inquiries of Michel De Certeau, on the relation between ‘Space’ and ‘Place’, a qualitative study was conducted based upon data about Jakarta’s expansion, in terms of its urban physical structure and demographics; data analysis was also carried out on the contemporary art present in the daily life of the city. Through a phenomenological experience of and investigation into the artistic phenomena in Jakarta, three conclusions have been drawn: (1) Jakarta is a city of collaboration with local marginalized communities, (2) Jakarta is responding to its urban landscape and (3) Jakarta unwittingly has become the host of an alternative space in one of its ordinary traditional markets.

AbstractUnderstanding the context in which professional practices are performed is essential to the work of the occupational therapist. ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze how homeless people live, in times of COVID-19 pandemic, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Method: an ethnographic research that used interviews and observations and articles published in newspapers and magazines of great circulation, using domain analysis. Results: the results tell how the COVID-19 pandemic emerged for the homeless population. Isolation led to emptying the streets and reducing passers-by, damaging their ways of living and their survival tactics. Hunger, thirst, absence of places for bathing and for fulfilling physiological needs became part of their daily lives. Final considerations: given the impossibility of having a place to shelter, acquiring food and water and the limitations in carrying out preventive measures, care actions offered by managers to limit the virus to spread, even in this population, are ineffective.
