This article presents the results of a Project process held in the under-spaces of two viaducts in the Laranjeiras district in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This process is part of a community-university partnership project, the “Square, the Street and the District”, which has been developed by students and professors of different fields and courses. This project aims to emphasize the relevance of interventions in the cities are made by a direct mode of popular participation, both in the elaboration and in the implementation of landscape architecture and urban proposals. A collaborative process was shaped to embody the notion that there is a “local knowledge, which is nurtured by the daily life”, as Milton Santos (1997, p.7) argues. Here, we narrate the methodological construction and the process of design experience in this case at the Laranjeiras.district. With this, we expect to demonstrate how the design and building of the city can be developed thorough participative and collaborative processes. The existence of an assembled and well informed project can be an environment to foster discussion so that more just and appropriate solutions may get forge.

ABSTRACT In this article we analyze the determinants of confidence in the Police Pacification Units ( Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora – UPPs). During their existence (2008-2018), “pacification” was represented by the media as an institutional hybrid which moved between two extremes. The police were either presented as heroes, whom people wanted to guarantee the end of shootings and ensure security in areas previously marked by violence, or as villains, rejected because of the lethality of their actions and the arbitrariness of how they dealt with people. Taking these representations as ideal types, we sought to identify the determinants of confidence in the police, with the counterpoint being a domiciliary survey carried out between 2014 and 2016 with 2000 residents distributed among twenty “pacified” favelas in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The results indicated that the respondents had ambiguous sentiments towards the UPP police, mediated by the perception that shootings were part of daily life in these communities and that the “pacification” had improved security, making the police neither heroes nor villains.

Thus, it is necessary to expand the knowledge in Occupational Therapy regarding the daily lives of children (Erês), especially those in the terreiro, which print forms of sacred involvement, based on traditional occupations, where the inside and outside of the terreiro have very tenuous limits. Aim: To understand the involvement in traditional occupations and the meanings and implications that these have in the wider daily life of children in the terreiro. Method: Dialogue activities were conducted during the development of a qualitative and exploratory research in Occupational Therapy, with a participant-research approach, with seven children from a candomblé terreiro in the city of São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between October and November 2016. Results: Graphic activities were produced that composed the children's narratives about the daily life of the terreiro. A mural served as a synthesis of the narratives and identification of four themes that made it possible to discuss traditional occupations in childhood, namely: 1) My life in the terreiro; 2) Being a child in the terreiro; 3) Being a child in a terreiro outside the terreiro; and 4) The Erê Yá L’omi project. Discussion: The themes highlight the senses of belonging, the identity construction and the ways of dealing with the violence of religious intolerance in the broader social life. Final considerations: Tradition and ancestry are fundamental elements of the occupational involvement of children and young people from the terreiro. This involvement refers to an intergenerational fabric, as they are closely linked to (re) existence and to the functions and learning in the terreiro. Keywords: Traditional occupations. Childhood. The chapter studies two photographic projects organized by groups of favela photojournalists in Rio de Janeiro. Moro na Favela (I Live in a Favela) was an itinerant exhibit that was displayed in various communities and cultural centers from 2006 to 2008, and Imagens do Povo (Images of the People), a book published in 2012, contains 102 photographs taken by 25 community photographers. The chapter examines the ways in which the photographs propose an alternative aesthetic of representation, challenging a regime of seeing through which the city has traditionally sought to recognize itself. It illustrates how the two photographic projects expose aspects that are part of the realm of daily life that are traditionally over/mislooked. The chapter also addresses briefly the spaces of circulation of the two cultural productions.

Through an ethnography on a beach in Rio de Janeiro, I describe some living spaces and, from them, I get inspired to think about some elements of that reality, taking into account the immense complexity that street movements impose on any reflective proposal. In addition, I develop my relationship with the field in the middle of making music. Thus exploring the content of the songs sung in the field and the collective exercises of singing them. This allowed to give importance to the movement, which is a key aspect in these reflections. Through the category Exu - developed in Afro-Brazilian religions - and some authors of symbolic interactionism, I understand the homeless person as a relational dimension. From there, it is possible to reflect on the conditions on the street, the production of knowledge derived from them and the importance of this in the exercise of recreating the city of Rio de Janeiro and its public spaces.Keywords: homeless. Among contact sports, the practice of martial arts offers a greater risk of causing dental trauma and fractures as contact with the face is more frequent. The primary objective of the research is to evaluate the incidence of mouthguard use, and the secondary objective is to verify which type has a greater predominance and the difficulties in its use correlating to the type of mouthguard used. A documentary study was carried out with 273 athletes of different contact sports, among them: MMA, Boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwondo of the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was concluded that the most commonly used mouthguard is PB Boils and Bites - Type II and its level of approval is poor, interfering with the athletes’ performance, mainly in relation to the breathing factor.

Densification by greening, or what we can learn from Singapore (essay) Singapore, a city-state with a high population density, wants to give its population, its tourists and its economy a living and livable city and has developed the concept of the Garden City. Parks, nature reserves, forest, green corridors, trees, botanical gardens, horizontal and vertical greening of buildings, as well as popular participation, are all important for this vision of the city. Singapore is counting on dense construction alongside “greening” and biodiversity. Let us be prepared to learn from Singapore's example! Our land is also a non-renewable resource. To protect our ever more limited agricultural land, we should renounce any extension of building land, and free ourselves from the expanding carpets of suburban development. Let us build multiple urban neighbourhoods with mixed use and more biodiversity. Let us develop new types of communal gardens. Urban gardens in the widest sense – from private gardens to garden cooperatives, to parks and botanical gardens – are a part of our living space. The city should be our garden.

Abstract This paper focuses on Santa Cruz Fortress, built in 1555 in Jurujuba (Niterói), to guard the entrance of Guanabara bay, and stresses its role as a towist attraction and leisure' area, as a social fix which links the city of Niterói to the complementary circuit of these activities in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The study uses important concepts and analytic categories fiom social sciences, particularly fiom Geography. In the spatial dynamic of the city of Niterói, change in functions of social fuces has been extraordinary. Single-family dwellings, buildings and even military installations have been re-functionalized, undergoing a process of touristification. In that way, the refunctionalization of the Fortress as a cultural space provides an important attraction in the domains of history, patrimony, and culture, providing the urban space with an expression of monumentality, created by man as a symbol of his ideals, aims and actions, a legacy to future generations forming a link between past, present and future.
