In this chapter, the various ways technologies have exerted influence upon cultures and societies since the dawn of human existence is examined. Be it man-made fire, sharpened stone tools and weapons, or cave paintings, humans are always inventing “something” to sustain or improve their lives and/or livelihoods, and generally make their existence more tolerable – and comfortable. The culture surrounding and thus influenced by technological advances differs from traditional definitive criteria of groups. A technologically-influenced society and culture is identified by its populace's ability to access and use its defining technologies. Nowadays social communication and interactions often occur with others across cultures, continents and socioeconomic systems as constantly evolving information technologies emerge as communication tools. In order to understand the role of technology's influence on our societies, we must understand the historical significance of various information and communications technologies' influence on culture and how changes in our interactions and relationships across all groups have occurred as a result.

Distance education is not new. Correspondence courses date back over 150 years. Advances in information and communication technologies, particularly the Internet, open up a host of possibilities to study at a distance, making use of the latest advances in e-learning tools. However, it must be stressed that e-learning has to focus on the learning pedagogy and not just the technology. This chapter examines the role of learning in e-learning by reviewing state-of-the-art developments and innovations to support distance learning students and academics. It identifies strategies for successful learning through the evaluation of student experiences and considers methods and practices that can be employed for delivering a successful learning programme.

Research background: While some researchers see digital globalization as a new form of globalization, others liken digitalisation to the globalization that needs to be managed and driven so that institutions and businesses can meet the challenge of digitalisation together. Digitization has encompassed all aspects of economic and social life. In increasingly fierce competition, technological advances and the challenges of science are becoming catalysts for globalization. There is research that suggests that conventional wisdom would say that globalization has stopped arguing that global trade in goods has flattened and cross-border capital flows have fallen sharply since the economic crisis of 2008. However, research shows that globalization is not reversing but enters a new phase that could be defined by a sustained increase in data and information flows. More than a decade later, the new global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is strengthening the role of information and communication technologies in both the economy and social life. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to highlight the main characteristics of digital globalization that have a major impact on current and future economic and social life. Methods: Documentary analysis and review of the literature are the main research methods. These are doubled by a bibliographic analysis of IT tools. Findings & Value added: Following the documentary analysis, we identified a series of characteristics that allow us to consider that global digitalization can become the determining factor of the economy with direct implications in social life.

Recent changes in information and communication technologies have significantly impacted teaching and learning processes. Methods of doing business have also changed. Many experts now recommend that students’ educational experiences be reformed to better prepare students for their future, which entails incorporating technology in the teaching process. The objective of this study is to assess the importance of technology and good instructional materials on two educational systems – distance and traditional systems. We conclude, among others, that good instructional materials should be clear, precise, and must deliver accurate message as were initially designed to do irrespective of traditional or distance educational system. We further conclude that whereas technology may have greater influence on distance education than on the traditional classroom system, however, when applied appropriately, technology will also enhance learning in the traditional classroom system. Students will comprehend faster, and it will make the teaching task less difficult. Education planners and instructors must ensure that application of technology; especially in distance education does not jeopardize the quality of learning.

If we want to convert our rural population into knowledge driven, progressive, self sufficient, self reliant, sustainable society, the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) cannot be ignored. Timely availability information is considered as most important factor in Indian agriculture. At present ICT is the technology of this millennium. Transferring the developed technology to all end users is time-consuming and tiresome task and is often not completed due to paucity of resources and lack of manpower. In India, agriculture and rural development has gained significantly from ICT due to its widespread extension and adoption. In this era of internet, ICT is committed to provide real, timely accurate authentic information to the farmers and rural peoples.
