Personal satisfaction is an indicator of life quality. Labor and country conditions have their effect, but individual factors dominate satisfaction, including family, sex life, educational level and neighborhood. I surveyed 1000 staff members of a Costa Rican public university via email. The questionnaire considered satisfaction in the personal, labor and country level. I found no gender diference in the answers, but partnered people are more satis ed that divorcees and widowers. People with steady jobs and mature age are more satis ed. Important job factors are working schedule, amount of work, salary, infrastructure and interpersonal relationships. Life satisfaction results from the interaction of the above variables, not from a single factor.

Smoking is one of the leading worldwide causes of cardiovascular disease and cancer development, and it not only affects the consumer but also those who are exposed to secondhand smoke. The economic cost of caring for the sick affects resources needed for education and prevention of addiction to cigarettes. This topic has been extensively studied in industrialized countries, but the information from Latin America is less available and seldom is based on inferential statistics applied to clear hypotheses, both central aspects in this article. To test several hypotheses on consumption and characteristics of patients we did an email survey to the entire staff of a state university in Costa Rica (N=2 850) in 2012. A 20% responded in a period of ten weeks and we applied a multiple regression to their answers. The results are statistically consistent with the hypothesis that being single, occupying high job positions and being male lead to increased consumption of tobacco and to an earlier start. To our knowledge, this is the first study using this methodology for the staff of any university in Central America.KEY WORDSFactors associated with smoking, Latin culture and smoking, use of tobacco by university staff, legal drugs, addiction.

Satisfaction is determined by a set of external and internal factors of the individual, experiences, culture and the environment; it changes with goals and achievements. Here I analyze the results of an online survey of 1000 institutional email users from a public university in Costa Rica. Men are more satis ed with life in general and single, widowed or divorced people are less satis ed than those living with a partner. The greatest satisfaction is associated with tenure, being over 31 years old and having a high academic degree. Overall satisfaction is medium-high which is consistent with other local studies.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Costa Rica is no exception, with high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in all age groups, and lack of adherence to treatment as one of the main challenges. We analyze the variation in test results of lipid pro le in one control and one telemedicine group in the staff of a Costa Rican university. We followed 62 patients aged 20-70 years, with tests done after fasting 12 hours, and 6 months to a year between samples. A questionnaire was used to calculate rates of factors that affect the variation in laboratory results. The patients had greater commitment to self care in the telemedicine group, achieving a reduction in total cholesterol levels, with little or no variation in other lipoproteins, and a slight increase in triglyceride levels.

Depression cases have been reported among workers in the financial industries. Occupations in this industry are considered among the most stressful ones. This study aimed to examine the impact of depressive symptoms of financial workers in China on their productivity and well-being. A survey was conducted using a convenient sample of 1024 financial workers recruited from three large-scale financial organizations located in the north and south of China. The result of Hierarchical Regression Analyses shows that depressive symptoms of workers significantly impaired their work-life quality. Severity of depressive symptoms had significant positive relationships with three behavioral manifestations at works. These are, in order of decreasing effect size, turnover intention, presenteeism, and absenteeism. Specifically, depressive symptoms had a larger effect on presenteeism compared to absenteeism, which implies the unawareness or insufficient recognition of Chinese workers towards depression as an illness in comparison with other physical illnesses. Moreover, a Univariate Analysis was conducted to study the moderating effect of emotional labor on the relationship between the severity of depressive symptoms and presenteeism. An aggravating effect was found, displaying a greater damage of depressive symptoms to psychosocial functions of workers. Besides, depressive symptoms of workers also impaired their quality of life in aspects such as interpersonal relationships, life situation, and so on. This study provides evidence of impairments of depression in the workplace, urging the management to pay more attention to its employees' mental health no matter whether it is for the sake of the company's benefit or the employees' well-being.

The subjects of the research were 161 undergraduates of both sexes, aged 17 to 21 years, of the first year of the psychology major of a public university in the interior of Sao Paulo state. Results indicated that: (a) the subjects consider that the most important to be happy is friendship (52.8%), wealth (18.0%), and physical and mental health (11.2%), that is, aspects more related to the ethical dimension and forms of glory; (b) most subjects did not mention the public sphere, and thus manifested a certain individualistic and naive view, since it is impossible to achieve these values without considering the public ones; (c) as for friendship, the subjects consider it a way to adapt to a new reality, far from their families,  and/or associate its establishment with happiness; (d) the intention to have friends refers to a demand for the same gratification obtained in their families, such as emotional support, and thus the desired friendship is not grounded in reciprocity, because the other is seen only as a means to enable the satisfaction of personal interests; (e) regarding  health, the subjects argued that it is a vital condition to obtain happiness; (f) as for wealth, they expressed similar justifications, that is, although wealth is not sufficient, it is necessary to achieve the desires that can make them happy. It was possible to conclude that material factors (wealth) and factors linked to the establishment of interpersonal relationships are the ones deemed necessary for happiness. Keywords: Happiness; university students; values.

The current study analyses the prevalence of sexual harassment among staff and undergraduate students at a Spanish public university. The EASIS-U, a 38-item questionnaire, was administered to a sample of 1,521 university students, and 172 staff members. Results show that 26.4% of teaching and research staff (TRS), 28.3% of administrative staff (AS), and 15.9% of the students had experienced at least one episode of sexual blackmail behaviour; 30.9% of TRS, 27.0% of AS and 16.0% of the students had experienced at least one episode of physical sexual harassment; and 23.7% of TRS, 34.4% of AS and 17.1% of the students had experienced at least one episode of verbal sexual harassment. A comparison of staff and students revealed significant differences in prevalence rates, with staff reporting higher rates of unwanted contact than students. Contrary to expectations, male students reported more sexual harassment than did female students. We analyse the possible reasons for these results.
